Genetically Modified People: What Could Go Wrong?

I’ll get to genetically modified people; but first, the background on the grand gene hype and propaganda operation—

The war against cancer has painted a picture of hope: genetic solutions.

This, despite the fact that there are no successful genetic treatments, across the board, for any form of human cancer.

The focus on genes is a diversion from obvious causes of cancer in the environment: industrial chemicals, pollutants, pesticides, food additives, and even pharmaceuticals.

This futile human gene-fix has a direct parallel in food crops: modify plants so they can grow despite drenching them with toxic pesticides.

However, massive GMO crop failures, reduced nutritive value of such crops, and the rise of super-weeds are three reasons why the gene model fails.

So it is with human cancer: “let’s modify the genes of people and they will be impervious to the environmental assault of chemicals that cause cancer.”

In other words, the fantasy proposes that someday, humans will be able to live in a toxic soup created by mega-corporations, and even thrive, because they have been genetically altered.

There is no reason under the sun to believe this.

“Trust us. Even if environmental toxins trigger gene mutations that bring about cancer, we can just cancel out those mutations through better human engineering.”

This is like saying you can cure diseases caused by germs even though people’s immune systems are severely and chronically compromised.

The entire cancer industry exists to protect the corporations that are manufacturing products that cause cancer.

I’ve made these points during radio interviews, and I make them here again, because major media news outlets are silent; they are part of the cancer industry and are beholden to the cancer-causing corporations that buy huge blocks of advertising.

In the so-called research community, scientists can spin their wheels and obtain grant monies to do experiments with genes and mice and ‘cell lines’ (*) forever and never emerge with results that will save lives. (*) (Note: by the way, did you know there is a huge, general scandal with ‘cell lines’? More on that here.)

These scientists and their corporate masters can herald minor tumor reductions. But nothing changes. The war on cancer is a war on people.

Assuming gene damage can cause cancer, the triggering event can occur as a result of coming into contact with environmental toxins. In other words, the toxic effects on genes will continue apace, no matter how much research is done on the composition and disposition of the genes themselves.

Much cancer research does, in fact, discover toxic causes—and it is in the interest of companies that spew those compounds out into the world to cover up their criminal guilt. What better way to achieve that than by asserting: “cancer is all in the genes.”

Look at the giant biotech companies like Monsanto, Bayer, DuPont, Syngenta. In one way or another, they are all involved in chemical AND genetic research and production.

So they are in a prime position to deflect the chemical destruction they are wreaking by pushing “the frontiers of gene research.”

“It’s all about the genes.”

Hype. Hype. Hype.

, who devoted a major part of his life to the research of environmental toxins, wrote:

“We are losing the war against cancer. The prohibition of new carcinogenic products, reduction of toxins in use, and right-to-know laws – these are among the legislative proposals which could reverse the cancer epidemic.”

But that would be bad for business. The solution? Promote endlessly the notion that genes and only genes are at the root of cancer.

The big picture? The big con? Imagine a world drowning in pollution of all kinds, and top (bought-off) scientists saying: “Don’t worry, when it comes to cancer we’ve got it covered. Tweak this gene, tweak that gene, and poof, cancer never has a chance. Or if you get cancer, we can go in there and re-position crucial genes and knock out the disease. See, you can live in a chemical soup and never feel adverse effects…”

Genes. High-level, high-flying, high-minded, high-tech answers for the problems we face.

What? The science isn’t solid? The propaganda is wall-to-wall? The shills are everywhere? Don’t worry, be happy. The best minds will come up with solutions. Just wait and see. The great discoveries are right around the corner.

And I have condos for sale on Jupiter.

Step right up.

You can see the same kind of gene-hustle when it comes to autism, which many researchers, based on no real evidence, claim is “surely a genetic disease.”

This assertion covers up the fact that happy and healthy children, soon after receiving a vaccination, experience devastating neurological damage, leading to a diagnosis of autism.

But don’t go there, don’t look there, don’t talk about vaccines. No, instead, listen to the ascendant experts, who say it was just a coincidence that a vaccine was given and a child’s life was destroyed. You see, what really happened was: an errant gene response kicked in at the same moment as the shot of vaccine. A grand coincidence. Nothing to do with the vaccine. Certainly not.

In actuality, the dominant paradigm of this world’s power structure is: float cover stories.

Sell big cover stories and keep selling them. Use them to conceal ongoing crimes.

“It’s the genes” is the latest and greatest cover.

Some of the biggest, best-educated liars on the planet deploy it every day.

Here is the next big thing: genes injected, functioning as vaccines. The hype is over the top. Of course, scientists admit that these injected genes will incorporate themselves in the body and alter its genetic makeup permanently.

If you like and trust that idea, I have condos in the core of the sun for sale. Bargain prices.

The reference is the New York Times, 3/9/15, “Protection Without a Vaccine.” It describes the frontier of research. Here are key quotes that illustrate the use of synthetic genes to “protect against disease,” while changing the genetic makeup of humans. This is not science fiction:

“By delivering synthetic genes into the muscles of the [experimental] monkeys, the scientists are essentially re-engineering the animals to resist disease.”

“’The sky’s the limit,’ said Michael Farzan, an immunologist at Scripps and lead author of the new study.”

“The first human trial based on this strategy — called immunoprophylaxis by gene transfer, or I.G.T. — is underway, and several new ones are planned.”

“I.G.T. is altogether different from traditional vaccination. It is instead a form of gene therapy. Scientists isolate the genes that produce powerful antibodies against certain diseases and then synthesize artificial versions. The genes are placed into viruses and injected into human tissue, usually muscle.”

Here is the punchline: “The viruses invade human cells with their DNA payloads, and the synthetic gene is incorporated into the recipient’s own DNA. If all goes well, the new genes instruct the cells to begin manufacturing powerful antibodies.”

Read that again: “the synthetic gene is incorporated into the recipient’s own DNA.” Alteration of the human genetic makeup. Not just a “visit.” “Permanent residence.”

The Times article taps Dr. David Baltimore for an opinion:

“Still, Dr. Baltimore says that he envisions that some people might be leery of a vaccination strategy that means altering their own DNA, even if it prevents a potentially fatal disease.”

Yes, some people might be leery. If they have two or three working brain cells.

Let’s take this further. Under the cover of preventing disease (note: all good covert ops float a laudatory goal to conceal their true intent), vaccines are ideal carriers for all sorts of genes that would be permanently incorporated into the human structure.

The enormous tonnage of propaganda about vaccines, and the resultant mandatory laws that enforce vaccination (without fear of liability), create a powerful channel along which re-engineering is eminently possible.

Synthetic genes injected into billions of humans would form a grand experiment to create an altered species.

This grand experiment could be compartmentalized. For example, secretly, genes 1-6 will be injected into Group A in geo-location I. Genes 7-12 will be injected into Group B in location II. And so on.

Vaccine recipients will be subjected to ongoing surveillance to gauge the results. On various pretexts, members of these groups will be brought into clinics for exams and tests, to discover markers that purportedly reveal their bodies’ responses to the genetic alterations.

Are these people stronger or weaker? Do they exhibit signs of illness? Do they report behavioral changes? Through surveillance and testing, all sorts of information can be compiled.

Of course, there is no informed consent. The human guinea pigs have no knowledge of what is being done to them.

And what would be the objectives of this lunatic research program? They would vary. On a simplified level, there would be two. Create weaker and more docile and more obedient and more dependent humans. On the other side, create stronger and healthier and more intelligent and more talented humans. Obviously, the results of the latter experiments would be applied to the “chosen few.” And clearly, some of this research will be carried on inside the military. Secrecy is easier to maintain, and the aim to produce “better soldiers” is a long-standing goal of the Pentagon and its research arm, DARPA.

A global vaccine experiment of the type I’m describing here has another bonus for the planners: those people who fall ill or die can be written off as having suffered from various diseases and disorders which “have nothing to do with vaccines.” This is already SOP (standard operating procedure) for the medical cartel.

The numbers of casualties, in this grand experiment, would be of no concern to the Brave New World shapers. As I’ve documented extensively, the US medical system is already killing 2.25 million people per decade (a conservative estimate), as a result of FDA-approved drugs and mistreatment in hospitals. Major media and government leaders, aware of this fact, have done nothing about it.

Here is a quote from Princeton molecular biologist, Lee Silver, the author of Remaking Eden. It gives you a window into how important geneticists are thinking about an engineered future:

“The GenRich—who account for ten percent of the American population—[will] all carry synthetic genes. All aspects of the economy, the media, the entertainment industry, and the knowledge industry are controlled by members of the GenRich class…

“Naturals [unaltered humans] work as low-paid service providers or as laborers. [Eventually] the GenRich class and the Natural class will become entirely separate species with no ability to crossbreed, and with as much romantic interest in each other as a current human would have for a chimpanzee.

“Many think that it is inherently unfair for some people to have access to technologies that can provide advantages while others, less well-off, are forced to depend on chance alone, [but] American society adheres to the principle that personal liberty and personal fortune are the primary determinants of what individuals are allowed and able to do.

“Indeed, in a society that values individual freedom above all else, it is hard to find any legitimate basis for restricting the use of repro[grammed]-genetics. I will argue [that] the use of reprogenetic technologies is inevitable. [W]hether we like it or not, the global marketplace will reign supreme.”

Here is another gem, from Gregory Stock, former director of the program in Medicine…

Space News: NASA’s EM [Warp] Drive Paper Says It Works, Musk Wants To…

Dr. Joseph P. Farrell
November 19, 2016

To say that the last two weeks have been an incredible period for news would be putting it mildly, by almost anyone’s criteria. One of the most interesting stories – well, interesting to me at least – was that indicating the President-elect plans to reorient NASA from its current Low Earth Orbit mission orientation to a new deep-space, long-term human exploration mission. In this, there was nothing really that new. Previous presidents have tried to do this, beginning with the administration of G.H.W. Bush, which was then revived under his son G.W. Bush, and even President Obama made a couple of attempts to reorient NASA; none of the efforts were really successful. However, it should also be remembered that DARPA, or as we affectionately refer to it here (following a suggestion of Mr. J.B.), the Diabolically Apocalyptic Research Projects Agency, announced during the second Obama administration a goal to make the United States “warp capable” in 100 years. So, quietly, even during the “space quiescent” administrations of Bush II and Obama, space has quietly been pushing along. The current President-elect however seems to have more than just a mission-reorientation in mind, but has actually proposed a bureaucratic reshuffling that would transfer low earth orbit oriented missions to other departments of the federal government, thus freeing NASA for the longer-term deep space missions. From a purely political and bureaucratic point of view, this would seem to make some sense.

All that is context, in my high octane speculation playbook, for a few other stories that emerged in the last couple of weeks that indicate that something, indeed, may be “up” with space matters. There’s three stories in particular that regular readers here brought to my attention, that I’d like to pass along, together with my usual high octane, or in this case, orbital speculations:

SpaceX wants to launch 4,425 satellites into space to bring super-fast internet to the world

Leaked NASA paper shows the ‘impossible’ EM Drive really does work

Documents/The Artificial Inducement of Space Warp

That’s quite a list, so let’s begin at the first article, and SpaceX’s Elon Musk’s plans to launch over 4,000 satellites to “bring superfast internet to the world.” There are three paragraphs here that draw our attention. According to Arjun Kharpal, author of the CNBN article on Musk’s plans, this plan is presented in a filing with the FCC (Federal Communications Commission):

SpaceX – the company on a mission to colonize Mars – outlined plans to put 4,425 satellites into space in a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) filing from earlier this week.

That’s three times the 1,419 satellites that are currently in space, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists, a not-for-profit group made up of scientists across the world.

Once “fully optimized”, the system will be able to provide bandwith of 1 gigabytes per second for users globally. That’s over 180 times faster than the current global internet speed average of 5.6 megabytes per second which was recorded in the Akamai State of the Internet report at the end of last year.

Reports earlier this year suggested Google and Fidelity had invested $1 billion into SpaceX to support the satellite project.

As noted, Musk has presented formal filings to the FCC, and has heavyweight backers in the form of Google and Fidelity for high-speed internet development. The question is why? Here I find myself in agreement with former HUD Assistant Secretary Catherine Fitts, in that this built out is in part a massive project designed to preserve US dollar reserve currency status, and this project can be, and I strongly suspect is enhanced by the offer of rebates on internet devices, smart phones, and so on, denominated in dollars. There is, however, a deeper agenda here, and I suspect most regular readers here already see what it is: such a massive build-out also implies building massive redundancy into the international financial clearing systems, which are currently rather centralized, and hence, easily targetable, as much of that system currently flows through SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Transfer) in Belgium, and CHIPS (Clearing House Interbank Payments System). Decentralizing such systems, using other database management systems, builds a measure of security into the clearing system that is much needed, especially against potential threats. The question is, why now? Why the push to globalize such systems and to build in redundancy? The short answer is, such moves are only undertaken when long term strategic planning indicates potential conflict on the horizon. Here the question is, with whom?

I suggest the answer is suggested from the space context itself, which brings us to the recent announcements concerning NASA’s tests of the EM drive, which produces thrust from microwave reflections and interferometry within a shaped, conical cavity. While I’ve blogged about this story before, I want to draw the readers’ attention to something very interesting that appeared in the second article linked above, by Fiona MacDonald; first, note the numbers:

Last year, NASA’s Eagleworks Laboratory got involved to try to independently verify or debunk the EM Drive once and for all. And a new paper on its tests in late 2015 has just been leaked, showing that not only does the EM Drive work – it also generates some pretty impressive thrust.

To be clear, despite rumours that a NASA paper on these tests has passed the peer-review process, the version that’s been leaked hasn’t been published in an academic journal. So, for now, this is just one group of researchers reporting on their results, without any external verification.

But the paper concludes that, after error measurements have been accounted for, the EM Drive generates force of 1.2 millinewtons per kilowatt in a vacuum.

That’s not an insignificant amount – to put it into perspective, the super-powerful Hall thruster generates force of 60 millinewtons per kilowatt, an order of magnitude more than the EM Drive.

But that’s not what caught my eye. What caught my eye were these statements:

“The test campaign included a null thrust test effort to identify any mundane sources of impulsive thrust, however none were identified,” the team, led by Harold White, concluded in the paper.

“Thrust data from forward, reverse, and null suggests that the system is consistently performing with a thrust to power ratio of 1.2 ± 0.1 millinewtons per kilowatt.”(Emphasis added)

Yes, you read that correctly, the NASA team testing the EM drive and performing these tests was led by Dr. Harold White, that’s Dr. Harold “Sonny” White, of NASA’s warp drive project fame. Readers here will recall my previous blogs about Dr. White, for it was Dr. White who, by reworking the metric of Mexican physicist Miguel Alcubierre’s 1990s warp drive paper, came up with the breathtaking conclusion that the vast mass-energy conversion needed in Alcubierre’s paper – a mass-energy conversion factor on the scale of the planet Jupiter, and hence impractical as a potential human technology – was far too large, and that the actual mass-energy conversion factor was much smaller, and conceivably within reach to human science in, say, a hundred years or so. It was because of Dr. White’s reworking of that paper that DARPA came out with its 100 year warp drive goal in the first place, and additionally, that NASA placed White in charge of designing the initial proof of concept experiments for his re-working of Alcubierre’s metric. All this places his participation in the EM drive tests into a different light, for what is being suggested is that the EM drive may have some very minor space-warping properties. Now, this isn’t a big surprise to those of us who have been following the work of the late Gabriel Kron, the Hungarian electronics engineering genius who first told us that all electrical devices, no matter how simple, can be derived from the generalized equations of electromagnetism by specific applications of tensor calculus and hyper-dimensional operators. In essence, what Kron was saying was that all devices of an electric nature are both hyper-dimensional, and produce minute modifications of the lattice of space-time. In short, space warps.

Which brings us to the… oh, by the way, did you notice the date of Ms. MacDonald’s article? Nov. 7, 2016, a day before the US general election, which has given us a President-elect who’s talking about deep solar system manned explorations, and oh, who, by the way, had an uncle who was a Professor at MIT, John Trump, who according to some internet stories was tasked with looking at the late papers of Nikola Tesla…. Talk about things that make you go “Hmmmm….” At the minimum, the presence of this particular technologically-inclined Trump in the stump of the Trump tree means that the current President-elect, unlike almost all previous presidents, may have a unique family insight into technological history, and perhaps even into some very secretive aspects of it, a definite advantage over his predecessors.

Which brings us to the third article about a small “start up” company in Nebraska that has been doing simple warp-field tests, using (here it comes) interferometry, electrical tri-poles, and measurement by laser red-shift effects. You’ll note that the context here is Einstein’s general relativity, and this requires some basic explanation. In the theory of General Relativity, large masses such as stars or planets literally “warp” the lattice structure of space time, in a fashion similar to placing a large bowling ball or medical ball on a trampoline that one has drawn a grid work of squares on. Placing the ball on the trampoline compresses that lattice work by appearing to stretch it in the region immediately surrounding the ball. This is of course a two dimensional representation, so one has to imagine an infinite series of such planes each in touch with a point on the ball, and you get the idea. The trouble is, in General Relativity, it can work in both directions: a large mass can distort that local lattice work, or a distorted local lattice work can create the effect of the presence of a large mass, i.e., gravity. What’s interesting here is that physicists appear to be discovering, through careful manipulation of such effects electromagnetically, which physicists, including Einstein, long suspected, namely, that there’s some relationship between gravity and electromagnetism. What I find intriguing about these experiments is twofold: First…

The EM Space Drive Now In Public Patent Process In The United Kingdom

Dr. Joseph P. Farrell
October 23, 2016

Over the past three days I’ve been blogging about the strange space news that forms, in my opinion, the necessary backdrop to the recent presidential Executive Order issued by President Obama in respect to “space weather,” and today’s story is no exception. By now most regular readers here have heard of the EM drive, the drive that produces thrust by relying on microwaves. The drive began in obscurity and, of course, disbelief from a certain segment of the scientific community, but has overcome enough opposition in various tests to be granted a trial test in outer space, and now, according to this story shared by Ms. K.M., is in the process of patent in the United Kingdom, the country where the EM drive was first unveiled:

A Patent For The Controversial & ‘Impossible’ Quantum Space Engine (EM Drive) Was Just Made Public

As the article avers, the significance of a patent implies some sort of scientific validity to the concepts behind the engine. But there are a number of statements in this article that give me pause, both for the hints and suggestions that the principles of the operation of this engine might be different from what was previously stated about it, and for the possibility that this technology might be far older than imagined, and that what we’re witnessing is one of those “controlled releases” of information of a “limited hangout” nature, but that is today’s high octane speculation which we’ll get to in a moment.

Here are the statements:

Utilizing electromagnetic waves as fuel, the EM drive creates thrust by bouncing microwave photons back and forth in a cone-shaped metal cavity.

Now, Newton’s Third Law states that without exhaust you can’t produce thrust, or if something needs an “equal and opposite reaction,” something needs to be coming out of the back of the propulsion system to push it forward, and the EM drive doesn’t have that.

It’s called the law of conservation of momentum, but this invention taps into the ‘zero-point‘ field of energy/electromagnetic waves.

By the way, the laws of physics need to be changed to account for the fact that space is not empty.

Experiments from a number of researchers from around the world and NASA have shown that it can indeed produce thrust with enough power to propel a spacecraft.

Now it is not entirely true that the “laws of physics need to be changed to account for the fact that space is not empty.” After all, the 19th century aether lumeniferous theory was essentially a theory of a non-empty space, and the idea that vacuum space has an energy of its own that is limitless and inexhaustible falls out of some models of quantum mechanics. What is new here is that previously the EM drive was said to be a simple microwave thrust.

Now however, that story has changed to the idea that the EM drive is really producing thrust or, to be more precise, a vector translation force, because of its utilization of the zero point energy. I find this highly intriguing for a number of reasons, the first of which is this paper, which is referenced in the article itself:

Anomalous Thrust Production From an RFT Test Device

If one goes to the diagram Figure 15 on page 12 of this paper, one will see something that I personally find very intriguing, for notice the counter-rotation of the device in stacked vortices along the central axis of the cone, and what appears to be a diagrammatic representation of a greater “thrust” toward the narrow end of the cone. Not to coin a pun, but this rang a certain Bell with me, for this is exactly the type of “reverse engineering” I attempted to do for the acclaimed Nazi device in my various books on the subject. Granted, this EM drive is not using any mysterious “Xerum 525” or thorium isomers not direct electricity pulsing, but it is interesting to recall that Nazi scientist Ronald Richter specifically mentioned that plasmas in such a rotational configuration and coherence, when sharply pulsed under conditions of such radio frequency rotation and proper resonance, could tap into or “gate” the zero point energy (see my The Nazi International). It is also interesting to recall that in Igor Witkowski’s reconstruction of the Bell story, the device levitated, i.e., produced thrust (See Witkowski, The Truth about the Wunderwaffe).

Under these circumstances I strongly suspect that DARPA’s recent announced goal of having the USA be “warp capable” and Dr. Harold White’s NASA research into warp drives are possibly connected to this EM drive research.

So why then call it a “limited hangout”?

For the simple reasons pointed out by Dr. Paul LaViolette in his Secrets of Anti-Gravity Propulsion, for in that book, Dr. LaViolette recounted the early 1950s experiments precisely in microwave propulsion, utilizing the soliton effect, which also seems to be at last strongly suggested by Figure 15 in the above referenced paper. According to LaViollette, these experiments were actually successful… in the 1950s. It is when one puts these four stories – the Nazi Bell (as I attempted to ‘reverse engineer’ it from Witkowski’s recounting), the 1950s microwave drive experiments recounted by LaViolette, Richter’s statements on rotating cohered plasmas under high DC electrical stress, and the EM drive – together that one sees an intriguing pattern emerge…

Limb Regeneration A Step Closer?

Dr. Joseph P. Farrell
August 17, 2016

While some have been busy contributing to the technologies of mind manipulation and total control, to electroceuticals with the potential to have an inbuilt “kill switch” for people foolish enough to be “chipped,” others are working on those technologies of “regeneration,” in this case, of the natural regeneration of lost limbs, according to this article shared by Mr. J.H.:

A Conserved MicroRNA Regulatory Circuit Is Differentially Controlled during Limb/Appendage Regeneration

The conclusion of this study says it all:

Our extensive analysis of RNA-seq transcriptome profiling studies in three regenerative animal models, that diverged in evolution ~420 million years ago, reveals a common miRNA-regulated genetic network of blastema genes. These comparative studies extend our current understanding of limb/appendage regeneration by identifying previously unassociated blastema genes and the extensive regulation by miRNAs, which could serve as a foundation for future functional studies to examine the process of natural cellular reprogramming in an injury context.

But indulge me for a moment here, for my usual high octane speculation. Recall many months ago I blogged about DARPA’s desire (that would be the Diabolically Apocalyptic Research Projects Agency – thank you Mr. J.B. for that one!) to create super-soldiers via the application and combination of a variety of technologies: exoskeletal suits to enhance muscular performance (able to leap tall buildings in a single bound), and in our book Transhumanism: A Grimoire of Alchemical Agendas, Dr. Scott deHart and I also pointed out that one of the goals of DARPA was to create a “universal vaccine”, i.e., a vaccine that would innoculate against all diseases. There was even talk of studying how dolphins sleep by quieting one half of their brain while…

The Latest In Mind Manipulation Technology: Neural Smart Dust…?

Dr. Joseph P. Farrell
August 7, 2061

Some of you may remember those old television commercials from the 1970s and 1980s about drug use; they would show an egg frying in a frying pan, while the announcer’s voice would caution, “this is your brain on drugs.” Well, never mind drugs; there’s always neural smart dust to hook you up for the ultimate trip, according to this article shared by Mr. A.:

The “smart dust” in this instance is supposedly about brain mapping, i.e., using small nano-sensors injected into the bloodstream to map the brain, and other vital physiological processes:

The system is officially called “neural dust” and works to “monitor the brain from the inside.” Inventors are attempting to overcome the hurdle of how to best implant sensors that can remain over the course of one’s life. Researchers at Berkeley Engineering believe they have found a novel way to achieve this:

This paper explores the fundamental system design trade-offs and ultimate size, power, and bandwidth scaling limits of neural recording systems.

A network of tiny implantable sensors could function like an MRI inside the brain, recording data on nearby neurons and transmitting it back out. The smart dust particles would all contain an extremely small CMOS sensor capable of measuring electrical activity in nearby neurons. The researchers envision a piezoelectric material backing the CMOS capable of generating electrical signals from ultrasound waves. The process would also work in reverse, allowing the dust to beam data back via high-frequency sound waves. The neural dust would also be coated with polymer.

But wait, there’s more good news: “smart dust” could be used to ferret out anything, and with proper application, could be sprayed on money to track its flow through “the system” (something tells me they won’t be telling what happens to it inside big prime banks):

The Roots of Today’s Tyranny: Total Information Awareness

Derrick Brooze
June 23, 2016

To understand the roots of the oppression, erosion of liberties, and invasion of privacy that has become the new norm for Americans, we must go back to the days following the terror attacks of September 11, 2001.

Immediately following the attacks of September 11, 2001, President George W. Bush was promising Americans that he would exact revenge on those who dare attack the empire. Dubya’s program of “Shock and Awe” gave the American public an upfront look at what the U.S. military was prepared to do to the enemies of “freedom and democracy.” The bombing of Iraq was only the beginning of a larger conflict that the Bush Administration dubbed “The Global War on Terror.”

The War on Terror did not end in the physical battlefield, however. The U.S. government was determined to root out all possible terrorist activity and in the process roll back as many of America’s hard-earned liberties as possible. Only 45 days after the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. Congress passed the infamous USA PATRIOT Act, typically known as simply the Patriot Act. The full Orwellian title is the “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001.”

The Patriot Act dramatically expanded the U.S. government’s abilities to monitor emails and landline phone calls, as well as also allowed access to voicemail through a search warrant rather than through a title III wiretap order. There is also section 215 of the Patriot Act, which has been used to justify mass surveillance programs by the National Security Agency.

The Patriot Act also vastly increased the use of National Security Letters, a tool used by the government to force telecommunications companies to give customer information without the use of a warrant from a judge. The NSLs are typically issued by the FBI to gather information from companies when related to national-security investigations. This information can include customer names, addresses, phone and Internet records, and banking and credit statements. The NSL also requires employees who have been questioned to be silenced via a gag order which prevents them from notifying anyone that the government is invading customers’ privacy.

Interestingly, many Americans are unaware that the Patriot Act was in fact written before the attacks of 9/11 (see this and this). Not only was the bill written and ready to be released at the right moment, at least one of the bills which spawned the Patriot Act was written by Vice President Joe Biden while he was still a senator in Delaware. In 2008 CNET reported:

The Center for National Security Studies said (Biden’s) bill would erode “constitutional and statutory due process protections” and would “authorize the Justice Department to pick and choose crimes to investigate and prosecute based on political beliefs and associations.”Biden himself draws parallels between his 1995 bill and its 2001 cousin. “I drafted a terrorism bill after the Oklahoma City bombing. And the bill John Ashcroft sent up was my bill,” he said when the Patriot Act was being debated, according to the New Republic, which described him as “the Democratic Party’s de facto spokesman on the war against terrorism.”

Biden’s chronology is not accurate: the bombing took place in April 1995 and his bill had been introduced in February 1995. But it’s true that Biden’s proposal probably helped to lay the groundwork for the Bush administration’s Patriot Act.

The advancing tyranny that has resulted from the Patriot Act, and the bills which preceded it, has led to what we see in America in 2016. The bulk of American communications are now scanned, monitored, stored in a database, and analyzed for signs of terrorism. The NSA has even built a giant database in Utah to handle all of this data. Big Brother and Big sister are listening through an array of devices. Cell site simulators aka stingrays, Automatic License Plate Readers, Audio recording devices aka gunshot detectors, hidden cameras and microphones in public, thermal imaging planes and drones.

While most Americans are familiar with the dangers and civil liberties violations of the Patriot Act, many may be ignorant to the other steps taken by the U.S. government in their misguided War on Terror. In January 2002, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), an agency responsible for all of the exciting and terrifying emerging military technologies, established the Information Awareness Office (IAO). The creation of the IAO was to bring together several DARPA projects that focused on using surveillance and data mining to track and monitor terrorists and other threats to U.S. National Security.

In November 2002, the New York Times reported that DARPA was developing a classified tracking program called “Total Information Awareness” (TIA), which was intended to detect terrorists by studying millions of pieces of data. The program was designed to create huge databases to gather and store personal data from emails, social media, credit card records, phone calls, medical history, and online history, without the need for a search warrant. The program also featured a biometric component that could be seen as a predecessor to the current FBI biometric database. The Electronic Privacy Information Center said the goal of TIA was “to track individuals through collecting as much information about them as possible and using computer algorithms and human analysis to detect potential activity.”

The man behind TIA was Vice Adm. John M. Poindexter, the former national security adviser in the Reagan administration, who was convicted in 1990 for his role in the Iran-contra affair. Poindexter’s conviction would later be overturned by a federal appeals court because he was granted immunity in exchange for testifying about his wrongdoing. Poindexter argued that the U.S. government must be granted even more powers than were given in the Patriot Act.

In 2002, The NY Times reported that Poindexter believes “the government needs to ‘break down the stovepipes’ that separate commercial and government databases, allowing teams of intelligence agency analysts to hunt for hidden patterns of activity with powerful computers.” Poindexter’s actions were criticized by many computer and security experts, including Barbara Simon, a computer scientist and past president of Association of Computing Machinery, who foreshadowed the coming Surveillance State with a warning that,”Once you’ve got it in place you can’t control it.”

“In some ways, Poindexter is the perfect Orwellian figure for the perfect Orwellian project,” Jonathan Turley, a professor of constitutional law at George Washington University wrote for the LA Times in November 2002. “As a man convicted of falsifying and destroying information, he will now be put in charge of gathering information on every citizen. To add insult to injury, the citizens will fund the very system that will reduce their lives to a transparent fishbowl.”

Public criticism of the TIA would grow so loud that Congress was forced to defund the entire IAO in 2003. However, many Americans correctly suspected that the programs were still being developed, only under different names, using different agencies. This fact would later be confirmed by Edward Snowden’s surveillance leaks of 2013; however, for those paying close attention, it was known for at least 7 years before the Snowden leaks.
