How Money From Pharmaceutical Companies Sways Doctors’ Prescriptions

QuestionEverything2

If your doctor receives money or gifts from a drug company, be it payment for a lecture or a free meal, does it influence the medications he or she in turn prescribes? This represents the burning question in an industry saturated with pharmaceutical company involvement.

A ProPublica analysis revealed nearly nine in 10 cardiologists, and seven in 10 internists and family practitioners, included in their study received payments from drug or device companies in 2014.1 But the analysis didn’t stop there.

It also looked into whether or not such payments were associated with prescribing practices, and here’s where things got interesting.

Doctors Who Received Drug-Company Money Prescribed More Brand-Name Drugs

ProPublica analyzed the prescribing habits of doctors who wrote at least 1,000 prescriptions in the Medicare Part D drug program. The doctors belonged to five common specialties: psychiatry, cardiovascular disease, family medicine, internal medicine and ophthalmology.

Not only was the receipt of drug-company money associated with a higher percentage of brand-name drug prescriptions, but the prescriptions rose with the amount of money received.2

The analysis included promotional speaking, consulting, business travel, meals, royalties and gifts as forms of drug company payments. Those who received more than $5,000 from industry in 2014 prescribed the most brand-name drugs. According to the analysis:

“In all cases, the group receiving larger payments had a higher brand-name prescribing rate on average.

Additionally, the type of payment made a difference: those who received meals alone from companies had a higher rate of brand-name prescribing than physicians who received no payments, and those who received speaking payments had a higher rate than those who received other types of payments.”

Are Drug-Company Payments ‘Thinly Veiled Kickbacks?’

Dr. Aaron Kesselheim, an associate professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, told The Atlantic regarding the featured study:3

“It again confirms the prevailing wisdom … that there is a relationship between payments and brand-name prescribing … This feeds into the ongoing conversation about the propriety of these sorts of relationships.

Hopefully we’re getting past the point where people will say, ‘Oh, there’s no evidence that these relationships change physicians’ prescribing practices.'”

Indeed, this is far from the first time that such payments have been linked to prescribing practices.

A 2010 study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine also found that nearly 84 percent of physicians surveyed reported some type of relationship with industry during the previous year, and those with such a relationship were more likely to prescribe a brand-name drug even when a generic alternative was available.4

The finding isn’t only relevant for patients, who may be paying more unnecessarily for brand-name drugs, but also for taxpayers who spend billions each year subsidizing Medicare Part D. At least 1 in 4 U.S. prescriptions are paid for by Medicare.

Meanwhile, it’s worth repeating that the reason drug companies pay doctors and aggressively promote certain medications is not to benefit patients; it’s to benefit their bottom line. And there’s often a fine line between legitimate payments and illegal kickbacks. ProPublica noted:5

” … [F]ederal whistle-blower lawsuits against several pharmaceutical companies have alleged that payments are little more than thinly veiled kickbacks, which are illegal. Companies have paid billions of dollars to settle the cases.”

Seen Any Big Pharma Drug Advertisements Lately? – Why Individuals Must Be Highly Skeptical Of Big Pharma Drug Pushing

Out of all countries in the world, the only places where advertising drugs to consumers is legal, is in the United States, and in New Zealand.  You read that correct.  In all but two countries it is illegal to promote/advertise drugs directly to consumers.

Many people do not know this, and for good reason.  The pharmaceutical companies would prefer people not realize what’s illegal elsewhere, because it would quickly show incisive individuals something is amyss.  People would immediately question the veracity of the situation.

Why is this important?  Because that law is in place to protect individuals from the highly specialized, and yet misleading advertising of all drugs.

Incomplete because, as Dr. Brogan notes in her landmark book, A Mind Of Your Own:

“…only two studies are required for FDA licensure of most pharmaceuticals, essentially leaving the population to participate in a post-marketing experiment in which adverse effects – casualties – are monitored passively.  It’s a fabrication of science to think these drugs have a place in medicine, what is meant to be the art of healing.” [1][Bold Emphasis Added]

Brogan continues outlining how efficient Big Pharma advertising is:

“It’s been calculated that DTCA [drug-to-consumer advertising] is responsible for nearly half (49 percent) of requests for drugs.  And fully seven out of ten times doctors prescribe based on appeal by patients who learned through their computers and televisions that they have an “imbalance” that must be fixed with a pill.”[2][Bold Emphasis Added]

More disturbingly, there is no extensive long term studies carried out to clear Big Pharma drugs before getting approval.  And these very drugs that have not been tested in any true long term settings continued to be doled out by the Billions per annum.

Getting to the core of the matter, Dr. Brogan elaborates:

Their patients have never consented to the long-term effects of these medications because pharmaceutical research is, by nature, short term.  There is no incentive on the part of the pharmaceutical  companies to take a good look at what happens to the average individual when she takes a medication for a decade or so.”[3][Bold Emphasis Aded]

The issue has gotten so bad, some doctors are even calling for a ban of this duplicitous practice.

With so much at stake – more than just health, people’s lives in fact – why is it that so many people continue running around the hamster wheel expecting change to take place in a corrupt for-profit system?  Is it blind trust?  Indoctrination?  Or is it more?

Either way, those particular laws that other countries have implemented, have been excluded from American Law.  This is quite concerning, giving the tens of millions taking medications in the United States.

In an environment which fosters duplicitous actions by corporations at the expense of the individual, what can one do?

Do your research.  Take charge of your health.  Read as much as possible about the disease – or health issue/concern – that you have.  Then read some more.  Don’t allow yourself to become one of the hundreds of thousands of people that lose their lives by preventable medical mistakes.[4]

Do not allow yourself or your family/friends or anyone to become a statistic.

In the end, our health, just like our lives, can ultimately be in our hands, or in the hands of those that just seek to profit from us at any expense.  Because after all, cures don’t make money.  Only disease does.

Why Have Drug Shortages Ballooned by 400% in ER’s Since 2001?

Is The Real Culprit Big Pharma Greed?

A drug shortage is plaguing emergency rooms in the U.S., and considering 45 out of 100 people visit one every year, this could affect millions of Americans.

A new study published in the journal Academic Emergency Medicine shows drug shortages in ERs across the nation increased by more than 400% between 2001 and 2014.

Researchers analyzed data from the University of Utah Drug Information Service, which receives drug shortage reports submitted through a public site administered by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Two ER doctors looked at whether the shortages had to do with drugs used in ERs, then looked at whether the drugs were used for lifesaving or acute conditions.

  • Nearly 34% of 1,800 drugs in short supply reported between 2001 and 2014 were used in ERs.
  • More than half of all reported shortages were lifesaving drugs
  • 10% of the shortages affected drugs with no substitute, including a snake anti-venom and a post-exposure rabies medication needed to prevent deadly infections.
  • Drugs used to treat infectious diseases, relieve pain and treat patients who had been poisoned were the most common drugs on shortage.
  • The number of shortages fell between 2002 and 2007, but rose by 435% between 2008 and 2014, suggesting a new policy at Big Pharma.

Jesse Pines, director of the office for clinical practice innovation at George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences, the study’s senior author, says that constitutes a health crisis.

“Shortages are real, they’re happening, and they’re getting worse,” he said.

Pines, an ER physician himself, said hospitals have been hanging posters with quick alternative drug options, but nothing can fully replace the dwindling medications.

STUDY: Long Term Use Of Xanax, Valium, Klonopin & Other Psychoactives May Lead o Cancer

Psych meds

Source: NaturalNews.com
Jennifer Lea Reynolds
March 7, 2016

Benzodiazepines (BZDs), the group of central nervous system depressants known to create feelings of calm, sleep and drowsiness, are under fire for findings that suggest they may lead to cancer. This means that the likes of Valium, Xanax, Klonopin, and a host of other psychoactives, are playing a role in chipping away at people’s health, putting them at risk for one of the most life-threatening diseases around.

The finding comes from experts who engaged in a longitudinal population-based case-control study in which information was assessed from the Taiwan National Health Insurance database. The goal was to determine any association between use of BZDs and cancer risk in people who were 20 years of age or older.

Unsurprisingly, but still terribly saddening, they found that the answer was a very likely “yes.”

The psych med-cancer link

According to the published study entitled, Is Long-term Use of Benzodiazepine a Risk for Cancer?, there’s a correlation between BZDs and specific cancers. The study notes that it was observed “… that benzodiazepines exposure increased the overall cancer risk up to 21%, specifically for brain 98%, colorectal 25%, lung 10%, esophagus 59%, prostate 36%, bladder 39%, liver 18%, pancreas 41% and other cancers 27%.”

While they suggest that, “therapeutic effectiveness of BZDs should be monitored closely for long-term users” in order to fully understand the scope of the implications, the experts don’t shy away from the likelihood that the use of such drugs poses cancer-causing threats. They write that “… we assume that risk of cancers could be associated with individual BZD, which might have some relationship only with particular cancers etiology need to be identified.”

The mind-altering drugs most of us don’t need, but are prescribed anyway

Unfortunately, many of us are walking around with a variety of psychoactives in our systems, popping pills like it’s going out of style. In fact, it’s all part of a vicious cycle in which doctors prescribe psych meds to people who – in many cases – don’t even need them. At the same time, such medical experts enjoy the perks that come with Big Pharma bribes, in the form of cash, decadent meals and fancy vacations.

So, while your health is put in jeopardy, some doctors literally laugh all the way to the bank. It’s of grave concern that this behavior continues; doctors who do this are playing a role in the approximately 5 million deaths that have occurred in the West just in the past decade alone – and it’s all due to unnecessarily prescribing psych medications to people who don’t really need them in the first place.

Not only are such drugs linked to certain cancers, as the aforementioned study shows, but they’re also associated with suicides and other worrisome issues.

In addition to cancer, psych meds linked to suicides, mass shootings

The British Medical Journal found that antidepressant drugs increase the risk of suicide and aggressive behavior; although this was especially so in people under the age of 18, the finding involved all age groups. A total of 70 trials were assessed to examine the safety and effectiveness of the most common antidepressants available to consumers, and it was found that such medications put the under-18 age group at double the risk of suicide.

Use of BZDs is even linked to the surge in mass shootings that seem to be occurring just about every other day. Surely, it’s not just a coincidence that the amount of prescriptions tripled between 1996 and 2013, while the number of overdoses quadrupled – quadrupled! – during that same time. What else has been happening though the years? You guessed it – a ridiculous number of mass shootings and acts of violence, in which it’s often discovered that the person or people involved were taking mind-altering psych meds.

Babies born hooked on opiates; others over-medicated by doctors

Source: NaturalNews.com
By:
December 30, 2015

The birth of a baby should be a joyous occasion for a family. However, over the past decade, over 130,000 babies in the United States have been born with drug addictions, making the experience anything but happy. Many times, the babies – if they’re lucky enough to survive – shake uncontrollably, one of the many outward physical expressions of being born addicted to drugs.(1)

According to a video posted by the global news community, AJ+, the problem arises when the baby’s mother uses opiates while pregnant. The National Institute on Drug Abuse explains opioids as medications that are taken to relieve pain. Morphine, oxycodone and hydrocodone fall into this category, although the list is extensive.(1,2)

Heroin is one such drug – and a powerful, highly-addicting one at that. Because it crosses the blood-brain barrier very quickly, people using it are said to experience an intense “rush.” In addition to helping to alleviate pain, heroin – considered a semi-synthetic opiate – is known to create a state of bliss among users.(3)

Shooting heroin while in labor; accidentally suffocating a baby while high

Sadly, heroin is just what Clorissa Jones was shooting while in labor.

“I was in labor, in the bathroom shooting heroin, about to give birth to my child,” she says. Her child, a boy named Jacoby, was indeed born addicted to heroin. He joins his younger brother Braxton, who was born addicted to methadone.(1)

She’s not alone.

Another mom, Reanne Pederson, says that her baby died when she accidentally suffocated him. She makes no excuses for the reason behind the horrible act: She was high when she did it. “You’re so clouded when you’re using and when you’re an addict, you think everything you’re doing is OK …”(1)

Of the problem, pediatrician Dr. Lauren Jansson says, “It is a crisis; it is [an] epidemic. The opioid crisis in this country is continuing to expand exponentially.”(1)

What causes this terrible epidemic? Our over-medicated society, perhaps?

Which, of course, begs the question: Why? How is it possible that it’s gotten so out of control, especially when the U.S. law mandates that hospitals report drug-dependent babies to social services (which, by the way, clearly isn’t happening). How is it that since 2010, at least 110 infant deaths have occurred, which could all have been prevented?(1)

Naturally, every person’s reason for turning to opioids differs, as does their decision to turn to them for recreational, rather than medical, purposes.

But let’s face it, the United States is an over-medicated society. It’s no secret that prescriptions are given to patients like water, with the medical system opting to make a profit off their patients instead of truly getting to the root cause of their health problems. Knee pain? Here’s a pill. Get lots of headaches? Take this. On and on it goes; pill-popping is almost an accepted norm in society for those in pain. Overall, people have easy access to medications which they could ultimately become addicted to and use inappropriately.

Drugs are even being given to perfectly healthy babies … So, if they aren’t born with a health problem, they’re bound to get one

Even our water system is riddled with drugs; it’s not uncommon for hospitals and everyday citizens to flush their meds down toilets and drains, putting millions of pounds of medications – from highly toxic chemicals like those found in cancer treatments, to hormones – in the sewer system.(4)
