Fighting infection with conventional antibiotics is becoming a hopeless affair. The CDC recently warned these drugs are useless in combatting deadly “super germs.” So what can one do? Your kitchen holds the key.

Every day in this country, all day long, patients and doctors reach for conventional antibiotics when opportunistic infections present themselves. The fact that most infections are self-limiting (the body has an immune system, we often forget), and that antibacterial antibiotics are often administered for viral infections, against which they are useless and even infection-promoting, is rarely if ever acknowledged. There is also the problem that antibiotics themselves drive the growth of antibiotic resistant subpopulations of bacteria, effectively creating “super germs” in the process. This effect can adversely alter the microbial substrate for our health for months, years, and perhaps for our entire lifetime (and our progeny’s lifetimes).

The good news is that doctors and their patients are starting to wake up. The concept of taking a probiotic to promote health, for instance, is practically mainstream knowledge now. There is even compelling research that viruses in our body are essential to fight bacterial infections and cancer, and that viruses are so important that we should consider taking proviriotics (substances that feed their growth) to support our virally-base immunity. Watch Dr. Virgin’s amazing NIH lecture below to learn about the health-promoting role of viruses as members of the virome (the viral component of the microbiome) in the video below:

The Rise of Natural Medicine for Treating Infections

And so, in the past few years, interest in evidence-based, natural alternatives, which provide safer and more effective relief, have increasingly expanded.   Together, we are re-learning and remembering the wisdom of the ancients: let food be your medicine.

At GreenMedInfo.com, we have indexed a broad range of natural substances that have potent anti-microbial activity, including commonly available and inexpensive ‘kitchen remedies’ like honeygarliclemon, to name but a few. In actuality, thousands of natural substances have antimicrobial activity, which unlike conventional drugs, are far more capable of restoring balance within the microbiome. We have indexed hundreds of studies on this topic, all of which can be found on our Research Dashboard dedicated to Antibiotic Resistant Infection.

Garlic Versus First-Line Antibiotic for Vaginal Infection

A relatively recent study adds to the already impressive body of research in this field. Titled “Comparing the Therapeutic Effects of Garlic Tablet and Oral Metronidazole on Bacterial Vaginosis: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial,” medical researchers demonstrated the power of garlic in treating bacterial vaginosis, one of the most common gynecological infections afflicting women of reproductive age today.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) affects 29.2% of women aged 14-49, and 25% of pregnant women in the US, according to CDC statistics.  According to the study,

“This infection is asymptomatic in 50% to 75% of cases and symptomatic cases present with homogeneous gray-white vaginal discharge with fishy odor, especially after intercourse or during menstruation”

It is believed that BV results from reduced quantities of hydrogen peroxide producing lactobacillus and increased anaerobic organisms such as Gardnerella vaginalis, Mycoplasma hominis, and Prevotella species. Antibiotics are notorious for lacking specificity in inhibiting only those opportunistic strains that can cause harm, which is why it is no wonder that the standard of care treatment of BV with metronidazole has a notoriously poor success rate.[1]

Moreover, antibiotics like metronidazole come with a wide range of side effects, including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, dizziness weight loss, and abdominal pain.

Even more concerning is the fact that the drug has been identified as a potential carcinogen both by the US National Toxicology Program (NTP)[2] and the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer.[3]

The new study tested whether garlic could compete with metronidazole in treating BV. Garlic was a logical choice, since it has been used as an anti-infective agent for millennia, and has seen a tremendous amount of clinical validation in the past ten years, as evidenced by the literature on our Garlic Research Dashboard. You can also read previous reporting we have done on the topic of garlic’s immense value in addressing infections, such as Judy Cohain’s article on “How to Treat a Vaginal Infection with a Clove of Garlic.” Much of this research also demonstrates the potent anti-cancer properties of this powerfully medicinal food.

The design of the new study involved giving two groups of 60 married women  (aged 18 to 44 years) either 500 mg garlic tablets comprised of 85.42% garlic powder, or metradizole. Each dose of garlic powder contained the equivalent of 8.9-mg allein, a potent antimicrobial compound.  Both drugs were taken with meals at the dose of two tablets each 12 hours for seven days.

The two different treatments were evaluated using a diagnostic criteria showing active infection known as Amsel’s criteria. Not surprisingly, garlic was found superior to metronidazole at reducing infection at 70% and 48.3%, respectively. Additionally, garlic was found to have far lower side effects.

The researchers concluded:

“This study reveals that garlic could be a suitable alternative for metronidazole in treatment of BV in those interested in herbal medicines or those affected by side effects of metronidazole.”

Isn’t that amazing?

Before the advent of modern, conventional medicine, the world over used natural substances – spices, foods, herbs – to prevent and reverse disease.  In fact, so important and valued were these that they were sometimes traded for their weight in gold. Now we know that the ancients were not as “primitive, superstitious, or pre-scientific,” as widely believed, we can appreciate science that honors their wisdom.  In fact, it was their use of these substances that enabled them to survive thousands of years without modern medicine, and it is the use of these substances that will now allow us to survive modern medicine itself, which has become a primary cause of death.

Would you drive up to a gas station and purposely put diesel fuel in your new car, knowing that it would break down, possibly within days, even though diesel is still “fuel?” If your garden was growing beautiful, organic vegetables, and you woke up one morning and saw hundreds of little bugs crawling on your produce, but they hadn’t eaten it yet, would you spray everything with toxic bug killer, try to rinse it off afterwards, and then still eat it and feed it to your kids?

In the first example, once your car burns up the regular gas and starts using the diesel, the engine will shut down. Plus, the longer the wrong fuel stays in your car’s system, the more damage it does to the engine, the fuel system and the injectors. In the second example, the toxic bug-killer is going to soak into most of the food, especially anything leafy or of the “dirty dozen,” which have porous outer coverings; therefore, washing them off does virtually no good.

Common sense tells us that in either case, the wrong kind of fuel, or worse, food soaked in poison, breaks down your “motor” and weakens your entire system. The human body is not very different to a car’s motor. Even though we have cleansing organs made to filter toxins, they can only do so much work, and when they get overloaded, they too work less efficiently, and eventually, break down and stop working altogether. Lines get clogged, like your digestive tract, and fuel injectors inject the wrong fuel, like your heart sending less blood and oxygen to your extremities, and the body simply stops “firing on all cylinders.”

Good gut bacteria (flora) should outnumber bad gut bacteria 85 percent to 15 percent

If you don’t know it already, genetically engineered or genetically modified (GM) food means that the seeds, stems, leaves and produce all contain bug-killing and weed-killing genes so that corporations can try to increase their profits. You cannot wash these pesticides off. These genes continue doing their “work” in your body, in your gut, in your organs, in your heart, in your brain and in your digestive tract. For example, the BT corn genes are designed to dissolve the rootworm beetle’s insides, so that when they eat corn, they either die or cannot reproduce. These bad genes, namely insecticides and herbicides, do not simply disappear or become inactive when humans consume them. These toxic, genetically modified genes dissolve humans’ good gut bacteria, diluting immunity in what becomes a highly acidic environment.

Did you know that each of us has roughly 4 pounds of bacteria in our gut? That’s why they call it a “gut bomb,” when you eat a meal chock full of pesticides, including most gluten, processed sugar and hydrogenated GM oils, and you feel awful for 10 to 20 minutes, or even longer. Your gut and your central nervous system are thrown for a loop, trying to find the pathogens and poisons, all while your immune system is severely compromised, making it more susceptible to colds, viruses, bacteria and other infections – ones you may already have, that then take hold of you.

That’s why doctors often tell patients they may feel a “little sick” or “weak” after a flu shot or vaccine – because you (or your children or babies) have been injected with some of the most lethal neurotoxins on earth, including mercury, formaldehyde and weakened versions of the viruses you most want to avoid. At this time, your body scrambles for nutrients, most likely emptying your reserves, just to fight off these foreign bacteria and GM-derived chemicals and pathogens. Not one MD on the planet will be honest and tell the patient that vaccines severely compromise immunity, sometimes for life (as with many autism cases). Did you know that some autism cases recede when good gut bacteria is replenished and sustained?

When you get sick, your doctor likely doesn’t look at this part of the body for answers, or solutions. But Dr. Edward Group says that your health starts with these organs and that almost any condition, including cancer, can often be traced back to them. Find out how your health begins here, but your doctor doesn’t know it.

89 Million Pounds Of Carcinogenic Herbicide-Laced Fertilizer Used ACross US On Lawns, Playgrounds & More

In a new white paper entitled Human Health and Pesticides: Glyphosate and 2,4-D, the Midwest Pesticide Action Center warns of a ubiquitous source of exposure to toxic chemicals: so-called “Weed and Feed” mixes, or combinations of herbicides and fertilizers that are spread across everything from lawns and gardens, to parks, ball fields and playgrounds.

89 Million pounds of Weed and Feed products are used in the United States each year, solely by the non-agricultural sector. The white paper summarizes the research to date on the negative health consequences of the two most common herbicides in those mixes: glyphosate (Roundup) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D).

Insidious, wide-reaching damage

The report utilizes the term “pesticide” as “an umbrella term that includes insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and rodenticides.” Placing the health risks of glyphosate and 2,4-D into context, the report says, “Most pesticides contain chemicals that can be harmful to humans, and exposure to these chemicals can cause illnesses (ranging from mild irritation to severe poisoning, seizures and death).”

Specifically, the paper notes, glyphosate and 2,4-D have both been linked to cancer and to disorders of the reproductive, nervous, endocrine (hormonal) and respiratory systems. They are both known to be especially dangerous to children. Like all biocides, these chemicals can cause both short- and long-term health problems, and the risks only increase with prolonged contact.

The report specifically highlights the growing concern over the ability of toxic chemicals to introduce epigenetic changes: changes in gene expression (without changing DNA) that can be passed on to future generations. Research has linked certain pesticides to epigenetic changes, but this research has not yet been done on glyphosate or 2,4-D specifically. However, both herbicides have been shown to cause genetic damage. 2,4-D causes both chromosomal damage and changes in gene expression.

A 2013 study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found that consuming glyphosate just at the levels found on food as residue, caused enough damage to the immune system and gut to damage the microbiome and encourage the development of every disease associated with the Western diet, including obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, depression, autism, infertility and Alzheimer’s disease. This “insidious” effect occurs slowly and steadily over time, the researchers found, due to glyphosate blocking key detoxification enzymes on a cellular level.

Before Microbirth- Symbiotic bacteria in pregnancy

Alternative health communities praise the benefits of vaginal birth for establishing a health bacterial flora in the body of newborn babies. The documentary “Microbirth” presents up-to-date scientific evidence about the long-lasting health effects that babies reap when delivered as nature intended or during a positive c-section [In a positive c-section, a sterile gauze is inserted into the mother´s vagina for up to an hour and upon surgical delivery is used to wipe the newborn´s body and head, in an effort to simulate vaginal birth and donate maternal bacteria]. Understanding the importance of seeding the baby with maternal symbiotic bacteria should be basic knowledge for doctors, midwives and parents alike because it truly has the potential to improve the health of the future generations. “Microbirth” is a grand and very necessary step into pushing this essential knowledge into mainstream medical practice.

But in order to get the full picture of when and how bacterial seeding of babies happens we should really go a few steps further than the truths presented in “Microbirth”. Or more specifically a few steps backwards, at least in time. This is because seeding a baby with maternal symbiotic bacteria does not start with a vaginal birth or a positive C-section at all. It all begins with conception and pregnancy. Unlike the outdated notion that a baby is growing in a perfectly sterile environment until birth, we now know that the baby is surrounded and supported by several different bacterial communities, which reside in different organs of the mother. Research shows that when pathogenic bacteria dominate the maternal organs, pregnancy complications become more frequent.

If the first bacterial seeding happened during birth, then we would expect meconium (baby´s first poo) to be essentially sterile, which we already have scientific proof that is not true. Therefore, somewhere along pregnancy, the baby interacts with maternal bacteria and receives the first sample of these lifelong, tiny buddies. Instead of considering birth as the only seeding event that donates maternal symbiotic bacteria to the baby, we need to understand that populating the baby´s body with bacteria is a multi-step process that begins with implantation of the fertilized egg, progresses throughout pregnancy and is finalized when the baby stops breastfeeding.

The baby receives and interacts continuously for the duration of the pregnancy with maternal bacteria and, later, vaginal birth and hopefully breastfeeding further reinforce and stabilize the first phase of seeding. These are all important and necessary steps for creating a healthy baby; it takes many months and conscious diet and lifestyle choices. Therefore, maintaining a healthy flora in the mother during pregnancy (by actively optimizing pregnancy probiotic / prebiotic intake and supporting beneficial bacteria) is the very first step for ensuring a healthy flora for the baby. Encouraging a vaginal birth or a positive c-section come second and breastfeeding third.

How Essential Oils Can Help Replace Overused Antibiotics & Stop Drug Resistant Superbugs

Essential oils

February 19, 2016

Antibiotic resistance is rapidly reaching the scale of a global health crisis. More and more people are being treated with “last resort” antibiotics, and the head of the World Health Organization, Margaret Chan, recently warned that the explosion of increasingly virulent drug-resistant microbes may eventually mean the “end of modern medicine.”

“The rise of antibiotic resistance is a global health crisis,” Chan said. “More and more governments recognize (it is) one of the greatest threats to health today.”

One thing that ordinary consumers can do to stem this tide, is to avoid unnecessary antibiotic treatments by using natural alternatives.

Why antibiotics are bad for your health

One of the most common misuses of antibiotics is when doctors prescribe them for viral problems, such as a cold or the flu, or minor bacterial infections that might otherwise have cleared up on their own.

Essential oils provide numerous benefits over antibiotics. They do not contribute to the evolution of drug resistance, preserving antibiotics for truly serious or life-saving uses – particularly if you avoid always using the same essential oil for every infection. In addition, essential oils do not cause wholesale destruction of your body’s good microbes – “microbiome” – the way antibiotics do. Antibiotic use is increasingly being linked with a variety of systemic health problems, probably due to disruption of the many subtle processes that our microbiomes perform for our bodies. Even taking probiotics after antibiotics is not enough to undo this damage.

So, for your health and for the health of society as a whole, here are some of the top antimicrobial essential oils. Studies have shown many of these to be as effective as antibiotics, and in some cases more so.

The top antibacterial oils

Tea tree oil is one of the easiest essential oils for a beginner to use. Unlike most essential oils, it can safely be applied directly to the skin, without first being diluted with a carrier oil. It has shown potent activity against viruses, bacteria and other microbes.

Eucalyptus oil, in addition to its antimicrobial effects, has been shown to speed wound healing and to protect injuries from exposure to air (much like a bandage).

Does your natural toothpaste contain peppermint essential oil, and not just peppermint flavor? It should! Peppermint is a potent antimicrobial and antiviral agent.

Lavender oil has shown antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It is particularly effective in speeding the healing of minor skin injuries including cuts, wounds, burns and sunburns, and keeping them from scarring. It is also an effective treatment for inflammatory and bacterial skin conditions including acne and psoriasis.

The common kitchen herbs oregano and thyme, in their essential oil form, are potent antibacterials that have both shown effectiveness against staph bacteria, including the MRSA superbug. Oregano has also been found to be effective against E. coli and salmonella.

The Microbiome and the Vaccine Industry

Source: GreenMedInfo.com
Keith Bell

The microbiome is at the base of the pyramid of life. Scientists are acknowledging it with every new paper published. New books and articles are revealing its importance to the public at large.

This includes vaccine scientists who acknowledge vaccine response hinges on the microbiome. They know vaccines can’t work when confronted with intestines containing an imbalanced microbiome. A stark example is the sanitation-challenged developing world where there are no toilets and people defecate in fields. This open defecation leads to imbalanced flora and a compromised immune system where vaccines fail. Vaccines don’t stand a chance of working under such circumstances because microbes dictate our immune response.

But there’s still something missing.

Though the vaccine industry has fully acknowledged their products require a healthy microbiome to be effective, they haven’t come forward to ask if the microbiome may also be the source of vaccine injury. If the microbiome is the solution, then perhaps it’s also the problem.

But scientists aren’t asking.  It’s as if they aren’t interested in vaccine safety. They only want to develop new vaccines and improve vaccine response. And that’s pretty sad considering chronic childhood diseases on the rise and an apparent autism epidemic.
