Technological Trouble For Labor Productivity

Amid the last election cycle, both Senator Sanders (D-VT) and President Trump made pledges to “bring the jobs home,” and Senator Sanders pressed for a $15.00/hour minimum wage. I couldn’t help but think, amid all the mudslinging that accompanies American elections these days, that everyone seemed to be missing something: labor productivity, as a measure in economic calculation, was going to drop rather dramatically as technology simply eliminated some jobs, and created new ones, and – as Catherine Austin Fitts and I have often discussed in our interviews – human productivity, in such seldom-measured areas as artistic creativity – which we both think will become increasingly monetized at a small entrepreneurial level simply out of sheer financial and economic necessity – is an important and overlooked area of economic modeling. And we both think it will become a crucially important factor in years to come.

The point was brought home to me during a recent trip to a large international retail chain. Making my few purchases, I wound my way to the checkout aisles, only to find none of the human aisles were open. Only a self-check-out aisle, with a dozen such self-check-out-lanes, was opened, being presided over by one human “cashier-technician”, for want of a better expression. Admittedly, Mr. Trump appears to be sincere in his promise to re-shore jobs, and thus far at least some of these require skilled positions. But the vast amount of jobs in the USA as elsewhere consist of jobs not requiring much skill, and this will be a long-term problem that, as yet, and in my opinion, we’ve seen no deep long-term thought or planning being dedicated to, on either side of the political aisle. And that’s a problem that is not going to go away, regardless of the good intentions of either side. Consider the implications of this very short article, with accompanying picture, from Zero Hedge:

Dear Bernie, Meet the “Big Mac ATM” That Will Replace All Of Your $15 Per Hour Fast Food Workers

A “Big Mac” ATM, place your order, insert money or card, out pops the Big Mac. In other words, even the current “storefront” operations, with their comparatively large overheads, are on the way out: why have a convenience store, when a couple of automated gas pumps(which we already have) and a couple of Pizza-Burger soft-drink dispensing ATMS will do the job? Why have Borders, with its expensive bookshelves, floor space, and overhead, when one can order the books from a big warehouse called Amazon, and fuel the coffers of Bezos who in turn fuels the coffers of all sorts of political agendas one might find objectionable? Just start your own ATM-internet of things business, and fatten your own coffers and contribute to your own political causes. (In other words, while at present all these developments favor the political left, ultimately…

Trump threatens companies with ‘retribution’ if they ship jobs overseas

Source: RTAmerica
December 6, 2016

Bud Jackson, Chair of American Working Families, and James Antle, politics editor at the Washington Examiner, join RT’s Ed Schultz to discuss President-elect Donald Trump’s Sunday tweet in which he suggested a 35 percent tariff on companies outsourcing American jobs. This came in the wake of Trump’s much-publicized Carrier deal, which kept nearly 1,000 Hoosiers from being laid off. Critics termed it a glorified bribe to Carrier, which received massive federal subsidies in exchange for keeping its Indiana factory open. They also discuss Trump’s recent phone call with Taiwan’s president and its implication for geopolitics in the region.

Globalism: A Psychological GPS System For The Masses

Geopolitics
Source: NoMoreFakeNews.com | JonRappoport.wordpress.com
Jon Rappoport

Globalism presents a conception of space, in which billions of people fit into their “best slots.” That’s the theme.

That’s the construct.

Of course, its proponents and bosses sell it as if the world couldn’t exist in any other form.

All isms operate in this fashion. Once the definition is laid down, the fictional field is laid out, and people are urged to navigate to their places.

“If you don’t, dire things will happen.”

People aren’t generally aware of fictional spaces and their psychological impact. Therefore, they go along.

This is why a museum can be so instructive. A thousand paintings, each with its own area. I’m not talking about a place on a wall, I’m talking about interior space, which the artist invents and shapes on the canvas.

With Globalism, the space is all about establishing control and distribution points for goods and services. It’s about erasing borders and nations. It’s about co-opting the notion of a unified planet, in order to broadcast fake cheesy messages of universal “share and care.” It’s about every individual “having his place.”

When I began painting in 1962, one of the first things I noticed was the abundance of space—on each canvas. Waiting to be shaped. The psychological carry-over was enormous. The notion of “fitting into a position in life” disintegrated. It made no sense and had no impact.

Globalism is a hustle in a long, long line of planetary hustles. It erects a space and claims it is the future for all. It’s a minor, minor painting by a group of minor artists, hardly worthy of a spot on the wall of a second-rate museum.

If we were living in a reasonably aware society, many people would be asking themselves: “What space do I want to invent, and for what purpose?”

Which of course takes things back to the individual and his inner resources. And away from overarching ideologies with their perverse themes.

If you were a painter, what would you paint? That question is a lot like asking: if you could invent your future and all the space that comes with it, what would you do?

To come up with an answer, you don’t need any of the GPS reference points of Globalism. They would only be a hindrance.

They would be delusions, masking your power.

“Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as ‘internationalists’ and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more integrated global political and economic structure—one world, if you will. If that is the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it.” David Rockefeller, Memoirs, 2003

The man who wrote those words represents a family that has dominated banking, oil, modern medicine, behind-the-scenes politics, and powerhouses of Globalism (e.g., the Council on Foreign Relations) for a century.

Globalism asserts that no nation can be independent from “the family” of other nations, as if it were a matter of fact beyond dispute. A nation claiming its sovereignty thus becomes a lunatic traitor to the natural order of things.

What really binds nations to one another is propaganda, and treaties which are based on the same propaganda, resulting in engorged super-profits for mega-corporations.

Globalism is a secular piece of messianic hype. A Disneyesque altruism is the prow of the ship. Spend 10 minutes educating any street hustler on Globalist principles, and he would recognize it as a standard con.

Obama’s warning to the Brits, that their withdrawing from the Globalist European Union would put them at the back of the line in negotiating a separate trade treaty with the United States, was sheer fiction.

Britain, or any nation, that has goods to sell and a desire to buy will find trade partners. An agreement could be scratched out on a napkin over dinner.

Impending trade deals like the TPP and TTIP are thousands of pages and take so long to negotiate, because the heavy hitters at the table are looking for new ingenious ways to cut and paste the world into larger profits for themselves.

Globalism, hiding behind thousands of academic analyses, picks up jobs from one nation, where wages are reasonable and working conditions are tolerable, and dumps them in hell holes where wages are nearly invisible and conditions are poisonous. It’s that simple, and any moron could see how the job-exporting nations would suffer…if by nations we meant people.

Instead of criminal corporations and criminal investors.

But all this is layered over with “share and care” sop.

The Education And Employment Myth: Almost Two-Thirds Of People In The Labor Force Do Not Have A College Degree

Source: MyBudget360.com
April 10, 2016

There is an ongoing perception that most of the workforce has a college degree.  When we say college degree we mean at a minimum a bachelor’s degree.  You would think that with $1.3 trillion in student debt outstanding a good portion of the work force would be college educated.  The opposite is the truth however.  Almost two-thirds of the workforce does not have a college degree.  That might be surprising to you especially for a country that pushes nearly everyone into college.  Yet this blind pushing of people into college has created problems for those choosing careers and paths that simply lead into more debt and very little marketable skills.  It is also a case where the younger workforce is more educated but also more indebted.  They are paying more for their education and their incomes are simply showing paltry gains.  This is why talks of the minimum wage are actually bigger than you think.  Many people are what we would consider “working poor” even though the media fails to acknowledge real inflation that is hurting the standard of living.  So how does this look on a nationwide scale?

No college for workers

I think the figures are rather surprising for many here:

“(EPI) Almost two-thirds of people in the labor force (65.1 percent) do not have a college degree. In fact, people without a college degree (which includes those without a high school degree, with a high school degree, some college education, and an associates’ degrees) make up the majority of the labor force in every state but the District of Columbia. Mississippi has the highest share of non-college educated workers (75.7 percent) while Massachusetts and the District of Columbia have the lowest shares (51 percent and 33.7 percent, respectively).”

Of course the distribution isn’t evenly distributed across the country:

labor force and college degrees

I believe the above is a big reason why so many Americans living in affluent metro areas are completely removed from the economic plight of most Americans.  Some are pushed into states with much lower standards of living and the dialogue is simply nonexistent with wealthier areas.  The media unfortunately caters to the elite markets and simply ignores the large masses of people that are getting by.  We have nearly 94 million adult Americans that are not in the labor force.  Think about that.  Nearly one-third of our adult population isn’t generating income.

THE BOOMER RETIREMENT MEME IS A BIG LIE

Source: TheBurningPlatform
Jim Quinn
April 4, 2016

As the labor participation rate and employment to population ratio linger near three decade lows, the mouthpieces for the establishment continue to perpetuate the Big Lie this is solely due to the retirement of Boomers. It’s their storyline and they’ll stick to it, no matter what the facts show to be the truth. Even CNBC lackeys, government apparatchiks, and Ivy League educated Keynesian economists should be able to admit that people between the ages of 25 and 54 should be working, unless they are home raising children.

In the year 2000, at the height of the first Federal Reserve induced bubble, there were 120 million Americans between the ages of 25 and 54, with 78 million of them employed full-time. That equated to a 65% full-time employment rate. By the height of the second Federal Reserve induced bubble, there were 80 million full-time employed 25 to 54 year olds out of 126 million, a 63.5% employment rate. The full-time employment rate bottomed at 57% in 2010, and still lingers below 62% as we are at the height of a third Federal Reserve induced bubble.

ScreenHunter_55 Apr. 05 07.52.jpg

Chart via econimica

Over the last 16 years the percentage of 25 to 54 full-time employed Americans has fallen from 65% to 62%. I guess people are retiring much younger, if you believe the MSM storyline. Over this same time period the total full-time employment to population ratio has fallen from 53% to 48.8%. The overall labor participation rate peaked in 2000 at 67.1% and stayed steady between 66% and 67% for the next eight years. But this disguised the ongoing decline in the participation rate of men.

In 1970, the labor participation rate of all men was 80%, while the participation rate of women was just below 43%. Then Nixon closed the gold window, setting in motion a further debasing of the currency, unleashing politicians to promise voters goodies without consequences, and giving Wall Street bankers and Madison Avenue free rein to use propaganda to bury Americans in debt, while convincing them trinkets and baubles were actually wealth.

So Much For Economic Recovery: Waiters And Bartenders Rise To Record, As Manufacturing Workers Drop Most Since 2009

Source: ZeroHedge.com
April 1, 2016

On the surface, the March jobs reported was better than expected… except for manufacturing workers. As shown in the chart below, in the past month, a disturbing 29,000 manufacturing jobs were lost. This was the single biggest monthly drop in the series going back to December 2009.

But not all is lost: as has been the case for virtually every month during the “recovery”, virtually every laid off manufacturing worker could find a job as a waiter: in March, the workers in the “Food services and drinking places” category, aka waiters, bartenders and minimum wage line cooks, rose again to a new record high of 11,307,000 workers, an increase of 25K in the month, offsetting virtually all lost manufacturing jobs.

This is how the two job series have looked since the start of 2015: 24k manufacturing jobs have been lost in the past 14 months compared to an increase of 365K food service workers.

If Bernie Sanders & Trump Supporter Had This Conversation

TruthLies

Source: NoMoreFakeNews.com
Jon Rappoport
March 16, 2016

wo years ago, on the 20th anniversary of NAFTA, the Globalist trade treaty, Lori Wallach of Public Citizen wrote, at the Huffington Post (“NAFTA at 20: One Million U.S. Jobs Lost, Higher Income Inequality,” 1/6/2014):

“…outcomes include a staggering $181 billion U.S. trade deficit with NAFTA partners Mexico and Canada and the related loss of 1 million net U.S. jobs under NAFTA, growing income inequality, displacement of more than one million Mexican campesino farmers and a doubling of desperate immigration from Mexico…”

Imagine that two guys (hail Bernie) (hail Trump), after pushing and shoving each other at a rally, crushing each other’s signs, screaming, throwing a few punches, accusing each other of betraying what America stands for, and so on, backed off, settled down a little, and actually (God forbid) started talking—

Hail Bernie Guy: So who the hell are you anyway?

Hail Trump Guy: What the hell are you talking about?

HBG: What do you do?

HTG: None of your business. What do you do?

HBG: Nothing. Not a damn thing. I’ve been looking for work since 2011.

HTG: Bullshit.

HBG: You find that hard to believe, you idiot?

HTG: No. I’m out of work, too. I had a job in a factory in Ohio.

HBG: I worked in a factory in Illinois.

HTG: You’re kidding.

HBG: They stole my job. My company shut down the plant and moved it to Mexico.

HTG: My company went to Bangladesh. The workers there make four cents an hour. If they’re lucky.

HBG: That’s why they relocate. Slave wages, no unions, no safety regulations.

HTG: Jesus, you and I are…

HBG: Looks like we’re in the same friggin’ boat. And it sank.

HTG: My guy Trump says he can bail me out with a job.

HBG: My guy says the same thing. Not sure I really believe him.

HTG: I know what you mean. My guy is a lot of flash.

HBG: My guy thinks the government can fix things. You mean the Congress is going to repeal all those fucking trade treaties that put us in a hole to begin with? I don’t see it happening.

HTG: Exactly.

HBG: Does it occur to you…

HTG: That we’re both being worked over? It sort of does.

HBG: I mean, how is it that, this year, there are two guys running for President who are opposite extremes, and both of them are talking about bringing jobs back to the US and how we’re being screwed? But they’re opposites. Total extreme opposites.

HTG: It’s like somebody wants to put us at each other’s throats, even though…

HBG: We both have the same problem. Caused by the same damn people.

HTG: The Globalists.

HBG: The fucking Globalists.

HTG: Can you imagine what would happen if all of us, all the Americans who’ve been getting screwed in the same way, losing our jobs, were on the same side?

HBG: We could be a fucking tidal wave.

HTG: So who wins by keep us at each other’s throats?

HBG: A Globalist.

HTG: A Globalist who’s running for President.

HBG: Who happens to have a husband who signed the fucking NAFTA treaty in 1993, and put a million Americans out of work.

HTG: Not only that. NAFTA put over a million Mexican farmers in the dumper, too. How many of them do you think have been coming up across the border because they’re broke?

A Teachable Moment: to the Young Person Who Complained About Her Job/Pay at Yelp and Was Promptly Fired

Source: OfTwoMinds.com
Charles Hugh Smith
February 25, 2016

You identified two problems but do not propose any solutions to either one; and you missed the two real problems.

This open letter from a young customer support employee of Yelp in San Francisco to her CEO has garnered a variety of comments that display a common bifurcation: some are sympathetic to her struggle to get by in a very costly region on a modest salary, while others wonder if the letter is an Onion parody of clueless entitlement: An Open Letter To My CEO.

I am sympathetic to anyone who arrives in a very competitive “big city” with no local contacts and not a lot of experience or specialized training. That describes me when I arrived in the San Francisco Bay Area a few decades ago.
