Internet Censorship in US and Europe Is Coordinated

The EU Is Warning American Tech Giants to Crack Down on Hate Speech Now  …  “They will have to act quickly and make a strong effort in the coming months.” U.S. tech giants including Facebook, Twitter, Google’s YouTube and Microsoft will have to act faster to tackle online hate speech or face laws forcing them to do so, the European Commission said on Sunday. -Reuters

Western governments are censoring speech in Europe and the US, an obvious pattern that clearly shows coordination.

In the US, there is a congressional effort to fund intel agencies that will investigate alternative media for ties to Russian propaganda. Such investigations , if they occur, will  retard this sector and make further, free-reporting difficult.

In Europe, efforts to control speech and reporting are actually being aimed at American communication enterprises such as Google, YouTube and Microsoft (see excerpt above).

More:

The European Union (EU) executive’s warning comes six months after the companies signed up to a voluntary code of conduct to take action in Europe within 24 hours, following rising concerns triggered by the refugee crisis and terror attacks.

This included removing or disabling access to the content if necessary, better cooperation with civil society organizations and the promotion of “counter-narratives” to hate speech.

The code of conduct is largely a continuation of efforts that the companies already take to counter hate speech on their websites, such as developing tools for people to report hateful content and training staff to handle such requests.

Top powers in the US and Europe will not likely admit coordination to crack down on Internet news and views but this is obviously what’s happening.

It is true that European censorship justifications have a longer history. Complaints about terrorism and hate speech have been voiced for several years. In the US, the sudden emergence of concern over Russian influence on ‘Net-based media is a new phenomenon.

Nonetheless, the House has just passed a bill to fund investigations into Russian influence on American media (see here). Such investigations might involve the tracking of so-called Alt.right “hate speech” as well.

Western efforts to “control” the Internet will no doubt adopt certain Chinese solutions over time. In China the Internet is actively being used as an agency of repression. Citizens are to receive ‘Net-based “grades” based on docility and how well they obey laws and generally fit in.

The larger question as governments crack down on ‘Net-based speech is whether or not people’s awareness of what is actually going on in their societies will transcend censorship.

History seems to show that after the Gutenberg Press launched an explosion of new ideas in printed form it took Western governments (and the controllers behind them) many centuries to regain control – 400 or 500 years as a matter of fact.

Western governments face similar problems now. A whole generation of individuals has absorbed a new way of thinking promulgated by the ‘Net. This is one reason approval of mainstream media is in the single digits while up to 50 percent or more (in the US, anyway) admit to belief in “conspiracy theories” – versions of important events not dictated by government and secret forces operating behind government.

In aggregate these views posit a different society than the current one. Today’s society is an outgrowth of World War II reorganization and depends heavily on the dictates of massive governments and even larger corporate enterprises.

‘Net-based alternative sociopolitical organization tends to criticize such titanic social solutions and is often more libertarian based. The idea is that culture ought to dictate social organization and economic, political and even military control ought to be organized from the ground up instead of top down.

These two models are on a collision course. Despite the intention of elites to wipe out the emergence of alternate thinking regarding social control, the insights that have been re-established via Internet communication are not going to easily or rapidly dissipate. In fact, censorship will likely reinforce their validity and emphasize their credibility.

A whole different world view is now part of people’s consciousness, certainly in the West and likely elsewhere too, even China. Such alternative insights about money, power and politics are extraordinarily difficult to eradicate. Ideas of freedom, local authority and individual responsibility are not easily stamped out once they have gained – or regained – credence.

In this case, the Western intelligentsia has been reawakened en masse to an alternative cultural model that has its roots in thousands of years of practice and application. These cultural solutions stand clearly in opposition to the current sociopolitical formula that emphasizes bigness and technocratic authoritarianism.

Anti-war, pro-individual freedom, private money and private justice, these precepts have found their way into intellectual circulation once more. They are extraordinarily compelling and will continue to have an influence far beyond what is easily apparent.

As this article was being posted, ZeroHedge reported that Naked Capitalism’s Yves Smith threatened The Washington Post with a defamation suit and demanded a retraction for reporting that the website was in league with Russian interests. We’re actually surprised a class action lawsuit hasn’t been launched as numerous websites have been smeared by these accusations. Could such a lawsuit be aimed at Congress as well (despite sovereign immunity)?

Conclusion: History may well repeat in the 21st century, but not necessarily in ways current elites are hoping.

Google, FB Team up to Censor Alternative Sites in ‘Fake News Crackdown’

Under the guise of stopping the over-proliferation of fake news sites, Google and FB are planning to take measures which would censor sites with alternative or controversial content, preventing them from running ads or appearing at the top of search results.

And In Russia, Power Stations Were Blowing Up & Banks Experienced…

November 14, 2016

Yesterday I blogged about the strange visit of US Secretary of State John “Ketchup” Kerry to the continent of Antarctica while on a global-trotting diplomatic tour, and right in the middle of what may have been the most important election in US history. All this context, I argued yesterday, may point to a hidden “diplomatic purpose” to his visit there, rather than the “climate change” non-explanation hinted at in the official US State Department announcement. After all, Secretary Kerry can state in Washington at foggy bottom and read the Antarctic climate change data. He doesn’t need to fly there, especially in the middle of an otherwise exclusively diplomatic tour.

But there were other very strange stories going on during the election run-up as well. On the day of the election itself, if the following story shared by Mr. S.D. is to be believed, apparently a power station near the northern Arctic city of Murmansk, and a key area of Russian naval deployments (the large Arctic submarine and naval base of Polyarny is nearby), exploded, a man in the Russian consulate was found dead, and helicopters were landing in a Moscow suburb with a heavy police deployment there:

Massive energy blackout in Murmansk, Russia after reported blast at power station (VIDEOS)

One website, The Daily Coin, notes in its article (“What the Hell Just Happened in Russia: Powerstation Explosion in Naval Base Region – Helicopters landing on Moscow Streets – Dead Man Found at Russian Consulate in New York”), that the occurrence of this during the American election, taking place on the same day, might have been triggered by a virus like Stuxnet, and implies and speculates that with the accusations prior to the election that the Russians might try to “hack” them, that perhaps all this was a little “too coincidental” and might have been a ploy of some sort to initiate a crisis and influence the American elections. If so, it apparently backfired, as to my knowledge, no major coverage was given to the story, and the Russians were not responding with threats and recriminations, though, as the RT article points out, a special commission has been appointed to study the event. That implies, of course, that they might have their suspicions. After all, it’s not every day that Russian power plants explode, particularly in militarily sensitive regions to that country, and particularly on the very day of an historically important American election.

But wait, there’s more. Two days later, according to this article shared by Mr. V.T., the Russian cyber-security firm Kaspersky, stated that five Russian banks had apparently been the targets of some sort of cyber-attack, as reported by Yahoo; here’s their story:

Massive cyberattack hit five top Russian banks: Kaspersky

Now, you’ll have noticed something about those attacks, but in case you didn’t, here’s the relevant passage:

Moscow (AFP) – A massive cyberattack has hit at least five of Russia’s largest banks, Moscow-based internet security giant Kaspersky said Thursday.

The country’s largest lender, state-controlled Sberbank, said it had been hacked into on Tuesday but managed to neutralise the attack automatically without disturbing its operations.

Kaspersky said in a statement that the distribution of denial attacks (DDoS) began Tuesday at 1300 GMT and targeted “the websites of at least five well-known financial institutions in the top 10” in Russia.

The attacks were still continuing on Thursday. Most lasted around one hour but the longest lasted almost 12 hours, Kaspersky said.

DDoS attacks involve flooding websites with more traffic than they can handle, making them difficult to access or taking them offline entirely.

These attacks saw as many as 660,000 requests being sent per second using a network of more than 24,000 hijacked devices located in 30 countries. More than half the devices were in the United States, India, Taiwan and Israel, Kaspersky said. (Emphasis added)

Note that these attacks (1) began at 1300 hours Greenwich meantime, that is to say, at 1PM London-time, which would have made it 8AM, US eastern time, in other words, as polls had just begun to open in the Eastern and Central time zones of the USA, and that (2) these attacks came from addresses in the USA, India, Taiwan (a close ally of the USA, and the seat of, well, let’s just say, certain NGO [non-governmental organizations] like the former World Anti-Communist League, with its close ties to the American intelligence apparatus, and, incidentally, to post-war Nazis), and Israel. (Another note on the Taiwan: recall that during the Watergate crisis, it was discovered that CREEP, The Committee to Re-Elect the President, was still receiving money and contributions, much of it being laundered through Taiwan, long after Mr. Nixon’s landside victory over Senator George McGovern in 1972. The World Anti-Communist League didn’t cease to exist, but simply re-branded itself. For its associations to Nazis, see Martin A. Lee’s The Beast Reawakens: Fascism’s Resurgence from Hitler’s Spymasters to Today’s Neo-Nazi Groups and Right Wing Extremists, pp. 189, 226n).

The clear implication of Kaspersky’s statements was that the USA was taking no chances about Russian cyber-operations during the American election, and in the context of the power plant explosion in Murmansk, the possibility that the latter might have been such an attack increases, in my opinion.

But that’s not my high octane speculation. Prior to the election, most of the claims that the Russians might attempt a cyber-operation in the American election was coming from people in and around the Clinton campaign. Also circulating in the American media, mostly among the independent free press rather than from the corporate globalist lamestream media, were reports of “counter-coups” being led against the Clinton campaign by ad hoc elements of the American deep state, in support of Mr. Trump(see the various allegations and statements made by Dr. Steve Pieczenik). Most readers here are aware that I’ve always taken the position that Mr. Trump’s campaign represented precisely some faction within the American deep state that was not on board with the neocon agenda of the past three Administrations, i.e., of Mr. Clinton, Mr. G.W. Bush, and of Mr. Obama. The curious absence of mention of these stories among the corporate globalist media, especially on election day, when it would seem to have benefitted Mrs. Clinton, if indeed, the left’s assertions of Russian meddling were true, is noteworthy. If anything, Mrs. Clinton’s approval of the sale of uranium to Russia would seem to belie her vicious anti-Russian rhetoric during her campaign. So might one be looking rather at an operation that was designed more…

Monopoly AT&T Plan Will Further Control the Internet, Content

bigproblem

AT&T Mulls Reinvention for Web With $86 Billion Time Warner Deal  … DirecTV parent wants to own leading Hollywood film, TV studio … Merger accord could be reached Sunday, announced by Monday … Time Warner Inc. and AT&T Inc. have survived the evolution of color TV and cable over the decades. Now they’re merging to adapt to the latest technological shifts: smartphones and streaming. -Bloomberg

Another Bloomberg article that makes it sound like such a vast merger is business-as-usual. But it’s not. It’s just a furtherance of the technocratic, corporate-judicial monopoly that passes for a “free-market” in the West.

Thomas Jefferson and other US founders were so worried about bankers and corporations that they made sure money production was left in the hands of individuals. Need money? You could dig gold and silver out of the ground. The federal government would weigh and stamp the metal. It was a confirmation process not a creative one.

When it came to corporations, history showed clearly their destructive nature. The legacy of the horrific East India Company was, for one thing, a US Constitution that made it very difficult for large corporations to emerge. In the US, the power to regulate corporations was given to states, and for good reason.

Before the Civil War (and the inevitable destruction of the republic) corporations hardly existed. And for good reason.

Here from Podacademy.com

The East India Company was in existence for over 250 years –  from 1600-1858.  It was the biggest corporation in world history.

Largely forgotten in the UK, it was responsible for the opium wars with China, it contributed to devastating famines in India,  and was a perpetrator of cruel employment practices in Bangladesh and other British colonies.

The East India Company was chartered by the Queen and even ran its own army at one point. Sooner or later, no doubt, US companies will get to this point. We can actually see this starting to happen with the emergence of mercenaries organized and directed via non-governmental enterprises.

The US government is titanic, intrusive and increasingly authoritarian. But corporations are starting to rival the government in size and heft. This is how genuine fascism occurs. When society’s organizing elements, private and public, become so large they dominate everything else.

The larger social facilities are, the less room there is for anyone else. The situation is complicated in the West by banking control, mostly out of the City of London. Secretive elements of intelligence agencies run things on the ground throughout the West.

And yet … as we often point out, corporations in the modern age are not inevitable, nor is the technocratic fascism accompanying them. Get rid of corporate person-hood, intellectual property rights, monopoly central banking (and intrusive regulations) and corporations will shrink back down to normal proportions.

Could it happen? It will  sooner or later, when everything finally begins to fall apart. The market will re-emerge. In fact, it’s the way the US was organized originally and responsible in large part for the miracle of industrial creativity and wealth that marked pre-Civil War America for many (though not Indians, African Americans, etc.).

Markets work. Anything else leads to the destruction of society either in the short- or long-term. History repeats, and shows us the lessons we should learn.

Conclusion: Unfortunately, there are other forces at work. This latest merger is not happening by accident. It is surely an attempt to further control the Internet and related technologies. It is portrayed as a market – “capitalist” – phenomenon  but it is nothing of the sort.

Orwellian Over-Reach: Rule 41 – New Law Would Let Government Hack Victims Of Cybercrimes

Source: RTAmerica
September 16, 2016

If you get hacked by a criminal, you could get hacked again, this time by the government tasked with your protection – that’s how an amendment to Federal Rule 41 of criminal procedure works. If Congress does nothing to stop it, it will go into effect on December 1, allowing judges to issue search warrants in other jurisdictions, compromising the security of hundreds of thousands of people both here and abroad. Facebook’s Latest $200 Million Spying Technology Just Blew Up On Space X

Source: TheMindUnleashed.org
Christina Sarich
September , 2016

We could bemoan the fact that Elon Musk’s recyclable rocket ship just experienced a set back, or rejoice that the recent Space X rocket explosion also just destroyed a $200 million-dollar satellite technology developed by Facebook, presumably to spy on the earth’s credulous inhabitants.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s developer, says that he is ‘deeply disappointed’ in the recent explosion, but that he will forge ahead with a technology meant to ‘bring the Internet to remote rural areas such as in Africa.’ Is Zuckerberg’s technology really a boon to society, or is it tainted with the same baleful ‘philanthropic’ disease as projects like those of Bill Gates and his Foundation – another billionaire with ample assets to control the world?

Though the social media platform has promised users it will alert them if they are being eavesdropped on by the government with ‘state sponsored spies,’ FB users have increasingly reported being vocally castigated for posting certain anti-government sentiments. Numerous people have screen shots of posts being pulled or ‘likes’ being altered – of outright censorship by Facebook, itself.

In another post, Zuckerberg seems to flatly deny overt cooperation with the NSA, or other spying entities in one breath, and practically admits cooperation with America’s clandestine surveillance program in another:

“I want to respond personally to the outrageous press reports about PRISM:

Facebook is not and has never been part of any program to give the US or any other government direct access to our servers. We have never received a blanket request or court order from any government agency asking for information or metadata in bulk, like the one Verizon reportedly received. And if we did, we would fight it aggressively. We hadn’t even heard of PRISM before yesterday.

When governments ask Facebook for data, we review each request carefully to make sure they always follow the correct processes and all applicable laws, and then only provide the information if is required by law. We will continue fighting aggressively to keep your information safe and secure.

We strongly encourage all governments to be much more transparent about all programs aimed at keeping the public safe. It’s the only way to protect everyone’s civil liberties and create the safe and free society we all want over the long term.”

Notice he reiterates the word ‘safe’ a number of times, but how can we be safe with a vast spying network being launched into space by a private entity listening in even to our phone conversations?

Is Facebook Spying on You?

Some users of Facebook have reported themes of conversation on their smart phones showing up in ads just hours after having a conversation related to the topics discussed.

One participant in a study which was trying to find out just how invasive social media can be said:

“It’s so creepy, it’s so creepy, I mean, for anyone to say it’s not creepy is just fooling themselves, it’s beyond what I ever thought I would see.”

For example, if a student discussed ordering food to take home or their favorite alcoholic drinks, those specific products would show up in the FB feed.

Facebook flatly denies using such technology, issuing a statement saying, “Facebook and Instagram do not use microphone audio to inform advertising in any way. Businesses are however able to serve relevant ads to people based on other aspects, such as their age, their city, and their interests.”

Zuckerberg does admit with enthusiasm, though, that FB is developing a form of artificial intelligence (AI) called ‘Deep Learning’ that can recognize you from pictures you post, even if you aren’t in them, giving your location, and other private information to whomever they please.

The AI, FB combo is beyond unsettling. As Wired recently reported, “Deep learning provides a more effective means of analyzing your most personal of habits. “What Facebook can do with deep learning is unlimited,” says Abdel-rahman Mohamed, who worked on similar AI research at the University of Toronto. “Every day, Facebook is collecting the network of relationships between people. It’s getting your activity over the course of the day. It knows how you vote — Democrat or Republican. It knows what products you buy.””

No matter how Zuckerberg spins his true intentions, stating that he “has developed other technologies like Aquila that will connect people as well,” the truth is that even in the most remote places of the world, there will be fewer personal freedoms.

How do you control an entire planet? You control their means of expression – their open communication. Facebook has already manufactured consent with a means to “amuse ourselves to death,” as Walter Lippmann would say. There are 1.71 billion active monthly users. Who among us hasn’t had issues with Facebook insinuating its corporate aims into our feed?

Propaganda imposed upon us by an elite media, and regulated by private companies like Facebook who are now editing our posts without our permission only add to a system of indoctrinated compliance.

Social media may be controlled by algorithms, but it is also controlling our opinions of democracy, war, and genocide. It is controlling what evidence we see of false flags, and tries to alter our opinions of presidential candidates.

Where once mainstream news had open conversations about controversial topics, but increasingly became silenced by a few companies controlling big-budget advertising campaigns, we now see a similar phenomenon happening on social media platforms.

When only four companies currently own almost everything in the world, do we really think Facebook’s space-satellite is meant for ‘connecting every single person,’ as Zuckerberg states, or is it just another means to lock down the inmates on this blue-green planet? At least for now, Zuckerberg’s plans have been spoiled. Thanks to the Space-X explosion, $200 million dollars’ worth of satellite spying technology is little more than rubble.

Watchdog: Secret Board Resolution Paved Way In ICANN Internet Globalization Agenda

icann-oversight-3
Source: ActivistPost.com
Daniel Taylor
August 29, 2016

Corwin: ICANN CEO Fadi Chehade passed secret resolutions, used NSA spy leaks as “false premise” to strip control from U.S.

Philip Corwin, Founding principal of Virtualaw LLC, and ICANN watchdog for the Internet Commerce Association, spoke out recently at the 49th ICANN meeting. ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is in charge of assigning domain names and IP addresses on the Internet. Until now, the United States has had contractual oversight for the organization.

Singapore hosted the historic ICANN meeting, which discussed the future of internet governance after the United States ceded control. Singapore has a poor track record of internet freedom. Terence Lee writes in a paper for Surveillance and Society that internet regulation in Singapore “… hinges on an ideology of control with the sole aim of producing law-abiding, self-regulated and therefore, economically productive, docile and compliant citizens.”

During the meeting, Corwin expressed his concern that the United States ceding control of the internet was based on the “false premise” that NSA spy revelations required a massive change at ICANN. Corwin also came out against pervasive globalization.

“I am a globalization skeptic, which does not mean that I’m against globalization in the abstract. It means I have great concerns about the quest for globalization that’s going on right now. We are clearly in a time for ICANN of hope and change, that makes me very nervous because hope is not always rewarded and change is not always for the better. I’m also a firm believer in the maxim if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Corwin also revealed that ICANN CEO Fadi Chehade passed secret resolutions to further the goal of “an internet cooperation agenda.” Corwin stated,

“In the last period, particularly in the question which was out there since last summer of whether the NSA revelations undermined trust in ICANN and the Internet and required the type of response we’re seeing. Instead, we saw the establishment of top‐down presidential strategy panels. We saw ‐‐ and I hate to say this ‐‐ a new low point in ICANN with the secret Board resolution last September that authorized the CEO to take many of the actions that have been taken…”

The resolution, issued in September 2013, was published a month after the October 2013 ICANN meeting that pushed for the globalization of ICANN. The October meeting called on members to sign the “Montevideo Statement on the Future of Internet Cooperation.” Corwin notes that “While the Montevideo Statement was signed by ten entities, the actual work of coordinating its issuance was performed by CEO Chehade pursuant to a secret resolution passed by the ICANN Board on September 28th.”

Corwin notes that “No consultation effort was engaged in with ICANN’s stakeholders and constituencies before these decisions were made.” The resolution states,

Whereas, the existing, global, open, multi-stakeholder Internet governance system is under increasing pressure to evolve and adapt to global concerns.

Whereas these increasing pressures cannot be addressed by ICANN alone, but only by a group of similarly concerned organizations and entities acting in concert, ICANN should participate in an effort to form an Internet cooperation agenda (“Coalition”).

Resolved (2013-09-28-C1), the ICANN Board authorizes its CEO to allocate necessary and sufficient time and resources of ICANN and work with other key organizations and leaders to establish a coalition towards the formation of a movement or initiative. The financial resources for building the coalition must be allocated from the already established Strategic Plan funds.

ICANN’s goal of an open and transparent Internet doesn’t seem to coincide with the organization’s recent activities. The move to cede United States control over the Internet is concerning for multiple reasons. Now that ownership is being fought for among the worlds repressive superpowers, freedom of speech on the Net is in danger.

With ICANN now open to the world, a whole host of anxious governments and organizations are grabbing for the power that is the Internet. The European Union, pushing for a “Web 3.0” that will facilitate the Internet of Things, is one potential player. “The European Commission’s position on jurisdiction and choice of law could lead to imposition of the European Union’s approach on data protection, cybersecurity, and other matters on entities outside its direct jurisdiction — including U.S. companies,” writes Corwin.

As former Bush administration State Department advisor Christian Whiton stated, ICANN may end up as part of the United Nations.

Similarly shady activity is taking place with the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which is seeking to impose corporate controlled Internet regulation on its members. Senator Ron Wyden told Congress, “…the majority of Congress is being kept in the dark as to the substance of the TPP negotiations, while representatives of U.S. corporations – like Halliburton, Chevron, PHRMA, Comcast, and the Motion Picture Association of America – are being consulted and made privy to details of the agreement.”

First The DNC, Then Darth Soros, Now It’s The…

HACKS, SNOWDEN, DARTH SOROS, AND RUSSIA
Source:GizaDeathStar.com
Dr. Joseph P. Farrell
August 21, 2016

OK… I admit it: all the recent hacks are just downright bizarre. First the Democrookery National Committee was hacked and its emails released, revealing a clear case of the DNC bending its own always-malleable “rules” to make sure Senator Sanders came nowhere near the nomination. Of  course, if he did come too close to the needed delegates (and it appears he did), then the will of the people in the so-called party of  the people can always be overturned by the Presidium’s “super-delegates”. The problem here is that the hack claims to have been done by a private group of cyber-vigilantes upset with the way things were being handled in the DNC in D.C. (that stands for District of Corruption, for all our foreign readership. And I know all the letters are probably confusing. The recitation of random letters and anagrams as if they are meaningful and decent English is an American thing, so bear with me). Then, of course, we had the hack of Darth Soros, revealing a what roiling pustules of activities the Sith Lord has been up to recently, from the Ukraine, to European refugees, and support for his young apprentice, Darthillary. (Seriously, one can almost imagine him waving his fingers and shooting bolts of blue lightning, or at the minimum, saying “These are not the emails you’re looking for.”)

Well, now you can add the Reichsicherheithauptamt… I mean, the National Security Agency(NSA), to the list of hacked groups, in these articles shared by Mr. S.D., T.M., V.T., and others:

The NSA cyber-weapon auction is a total smokescreen — here’s what’s really going on

Here’s why the supposed NSA ‘hack’ is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before

And lest we forget the bit about Darth Soros, here’s that story:

Thousands of Soros docs released by alleged Russian-backed hackers

Now, before we get to today’s HOS (high octane speculation), let’s pause and consider WWH (What We Have):

  1. Who has been hacked? The DNC, Darth Soros, and now, the NSA.
  2. Who hacked them? Well, a strange assortment of “private groups”, with the latest hack of the NSA claimed to have been done by a group calling itself “the Brokers’ Group”, after technicians for the Russian cyber-security firm Kaspersky supposedly uncovered the NSA’s front group, which was called the “Equation Group.”  (See this Zero Hedge article: MYSTERIOUS GROUP HACKS NSA)
  3. WDTW? Well, it appears TW either to influence the American election, or in the last instance, just plain ole money, in the form of Bitcoin, for their efforts.

Now, all of this brings us to our HOS of the day. Suppose, for a moment, the Russians are behind all of this, which is indeed the CO(considered opinion) of the first two linked articles:

But experts say that this is all a smokescreen for a not-so-subtle message from Moscow to Washington: Don’t mess with us.

“It’s a smokescreen, there’s nothing real about this,” John Schindler, a former NSA analyst and counterintelligence officer, told Business Insider. “This is Moscow’s way of upping the ante in the spy war, and sending a message no one can miss [which is] ‘we have you penetrated, we’ve got you by the balls, don’t push us.'”

He added: “The Russians are making a power play because they think they can right now.”

The previously-unknown Shadow Brokers created a number of social-media accounts earlier this month on Reddit, Github, Twitter, and Imgur, before announcing on August 13 its “cyber weapon auction,” which promised bidders a “full state sponsor tool set” from a hacking unit believed to be within the NSA known only as “The Equation Group.”

It released a 234-megabyte archive on various file-sharing sites with one-half being free to view and use — which numerous experts say is legitimate — while the other half was encrypted. The winner of the auction, the group said, would get the decryption key.

But an auction for hacking tools and exploits is not something that ever happens, experts say. Instead, exploits are bought and sold on the black market for hundreds of thousands and sometimes millions of dollars, in private.

There’s something else going on here, and it seems like it has nothing to do with a hacking group looking for cash.

And even Edward Snowden has joined the “Russians are Behind it” chorus:

Former NSA contractor Edward Snowden offered his opinion on the underlying message behind the “auction” in a series of tweets on Tuesday, notably pointing the finger at Russia as being behind it.

Now at one level, all this makes a great deal of sense, for after the DNC hack, party commissars were quick to point the finger of blame at Russia. That too makes sense, since the Russians know a Darthillary presidency might be more of the same neocon unipolarism we’ve seen since 9/11, on steroids. But, weighing in against this view is the fact that Darthillary expedited the shipment of refined uranium… to Russia. (And that raises questions of its own, for Russia is perfectly capable of refining uranium on its own. So was Russia acting as a middleman for someone else? Or just in a hurry to build more bombs for the inevitable showdown with the very person and her backers who expedited the sale?)  My point here, is that the “Russians did it” chorus on the DNC hack is standing on shaky bleachers.

A Russian hack of Darth Soros makes eminent sense, and even more sense, than on the DNC. Soros’ role, especially since his emails were released, in the Ukrainian mess, is well-known, as is Russia’s outlawing of NGO groups (such as Soros’). From the Russian point of view, such groups are nothing but gangs, racketeering operations, and front groups for “revolutionary” activities enjoying the protection of western law, governments, and powerful patronage. In this context, a Russian hack of the NSA to send messages also makes sense.

But what if(here’s our HOS) the meme of private groups being behind this is true after all?  What would this mean? What would the implications be? It would first mean nothing less than that someone is spending time and money to…

First Private Company Authorized To Land On The Moon

FIRST PRIVATE COMPANY AUTHORIZED TO LAND ON THE MOON

Many regular readers here sent me versions of this story, and I’d like to thank them all for drawing our attention to it, for here, as always, I suspect there’s more going on than meets the eye. Here’s one version of the story:

A start-up’s race to harvest the moon’s treasures

Once again, we’re being told that the wealth of riches to be mined on the Moon is the only motivation for going there, beyond, of course, the usual “stepping-stone-to-Mars” meme:

In a race against global superpowers, Moon Express — a private venture founded by billionaire entrepreneur Naveen Jain, space technology guru Dr. Barney Pell and space futurist Dr. Bob Richards — has cleared a path for private U.S . companies looking to explore and commercialize space.

Today the company is the first private enterprise in history to receive U.S. government approval to travel beyond Earth’s orbit and undertake a deep space mission. The goal: to land a robotic spacecraft on the moon’s surface in 2017 and analyze and explore its valuable resources that can be used on Earth.

The moon is a treasure chest that has vast amounts of iron ore, water, rare Earth minerals and precious metals, as well as carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and helium-3, a gas that can be used in future fusion reactors to provide nuclear power without radioactive waste. Experts concur that the value of these resources are in the trillions of dollars.

But there’s a catch here, and it leaped off the page at me, but first, a few “Moon Landing” facts: if one wants to land on the moon, one must select an appropriate landing site, and that requires some extensive mapping of the surface, and planning. So the first question this raises to my mind is: have these private companies already secretly launched satellites to do so? Or have they entered into private and hidden arrangements with the various governments that have had lunar surveying and mapping missions?

I suspect the latter is the order of the day, and that there are such hidden agreements already worked out. Here’s why (and herewith the part of the article that leaped out at me):

Already, Moon Express has six payloads on its manifest for its first mission, planned for the second half of next year. According to Moon Express CEO Richards, customers include Google Lunar X Prize; the International Lunar Observatory; Celestis; and a partnership between the University of Maryland and the National Laboratories of Frascati, Italy.

The mission will be a baseline where a camera will be set up to take photos and video. According to Richards, the International Lunar Observatory plans to put a “mooncam” (a small astronomical observatory) accessible on the internet on the moon’s surface. Google plans to provide access to these images through YouTube — democratizing information about this important celestial body.

The company also expects NASA will send one or two payloads on the first Moon Express mission, Richards said. Dr. Christopher McKay, an astrobiologist at NASA Ames Research Center who is involved in planning for future Mars missions, has expressed interest in sending an incubated mustard seed plant to the moon to see how plants can be gestated in lunar gravity and radiation. (Emphases added)

Photos? Live video streaming? For those of us (myself included in this group) who suspect that there is “artificial stuff” up there, based on analysis of old Russian and American satellite and later Apollo photographs (think only of the “Blair cuspids” here), this revelation implies three different scenarios might be in play.

The first of these is that the “era of secrecy” might be drawing to a close, as technology makes the Moon more accessible, it also makes it increasingly difficult to keep such things hidden and secret. Indeed, just as the New World was known to Europe long before the staged “discovery” of it by Columbus, one might be looking at a similar scenario here: corporations may be tasked with “lifting the veil” on the subject.
