The Latest Twist In HFT [High Frequency Trading]: Atomic Clocks

THE LATEST TWIST IN HFT(HIGH FREQUENCY TRADING): ATOMIC CLOCKS

Mr. J.K. shared this story with us, and I have to talk about it. In previous blogs I’ve talked about the growth of “dark pools” and HFT (high frequency trading) algorithms, where computers place trades on the stock markets and commodities markets, and a few pico seconds can mean whether a trade is placed or not, or whether a trade will be successful and profitable or not. Now, the latest twist, according to this article, is that atomic clocks are now to be brought into the picture:

Legendary Hedge Fund Wants to Use Atomic Clocks to Beat High-Speed Traders

Yes, that’s right, the rates of radioactive decay will be used to coordinate simultaneous trades in multiple markets:

The 16-page document was quietly published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in February. Replete with schematic drawings, the filing describes a novel way for “executing synchronized trades in multiple exchanges.” The invention consists of not only sophisticated algorithms and a host of computer servers, but atomic clocks — precisely calibrated to vibrations of irradiated cesium atoms — to sync orders to within a few billionths of a second.

And if it works as advertised, one of the most illustrious names in the hedge-fund business could gain exclusive U.S. rights to a weapon capable of thwarting even the most predatory of high-speed traders.

The application belongs to Renaissance Technologies, the ultra-secretive and highly profitable $32 billion firm founded by mathematician and former code breaker Jim Simons. And the lengths it’s been willing to go to build and patent its own computer-driven technology — at a potential cost of tens of millions of dollars — underscores just how big a threat high-frequency traders have become to the industry’s largest and savviest players.

As you might expect, I simply cannot resist some high octane speculation – or in this case, really way-out-there-in-orbit speculations – about this story. In the past, I’ve pointed out that HFT really is a kind of trading that is no longer reflective of genuinely human markets. After all, the 2010 Flash Crash showed us what can happen when a computer “goes rogue” and places trades that can literally drive down or pump up a stock or even whole blocs of stocks with no real reflection of their market value (AI anyone?). And for those wanting “the nightmare” scenario, think of that episode from the CBS television series Person of Interest, where a malevolent AI literally crashes the New York Stock Exchange, then miraculously shuts down its trades just before the NYSE’s “failsafe” systems kick in to suspend trading. And if you really want to speculate wildly, remember all those stories of UFOs shutting down, or worse, turning on, ICBMs in their silos and beginning the launch countdown. ETs, or AIs, take your pick, the bottom line is that HFTs provoke the philosophical debate not only of how secure digital systems are, and how well, or poorly, they reflect genuine market value and trades.

So many people sent me versions of this story, that I have to wonder what’s up. Here’s two versions of the story:

FAA warns pilots of massive GPS outages caused by secret weapon tests

Military Secretive About GPS Blackout Over California: “Testing Something That Disrupts GPS Over a Huge Area”

So what’s going on here?

Well, permit me to indulge in our usual geostationary orbital speculation. While there have also been stories that this test has been cancelled, it’s the story itself that intrigues, for behind it is the implicit claim that (1) the USA has a top secret weapon, (2) it intended to test it, and (3) the test would interfere in some fashion with Global Positioning data upon which modern air traffic depends, data that in turn comes from satellites.

This, I suspect, was the real message behind the test.

Message?

Yes, I said message. In case you haven’t noticed, the USA and Russia have been playing an old Cold War game, showing off their newest weapons systems capabilities to each other. It began with the Russian intervention in Syria, and its use of cruise missiles fired from Russian Warships in the Caspian Sea. The missiles reached their targets, of course, and obliterated them. More importantly still, Russia has unveiled the capabilities of its new land-based ICBM, a MIRVed monster that, unlike the ICBMs of yesteryear, is a weapon whose warheads are designed to strike anywhere on Earth, using any trajectory, eliminating the old “over the Arctic pole” trajectories. Moreover, it is claimed that these warheads can be re-targeted and re-directed in flight, and can thus change course. In other words, the new Russian ICBM is any missile-defense systems engineer’s worst nightmare. And one can only presume the Russians have added typical counter-measures to the weapon: dummy warheads and so on.

Russia Has A New Ground-Based Anti-Satellite Weapon

This story may be giving the policy wonks in the Pentagram a bit to worry about, and, given the blogs of the last two days concerning new hydrocarbon production methods, and Middle East geopolitics, this is another one that demonstrates just how interconnected the world of science, foreign affairs, and finance really are. It was shared by Ms. K.F., and when you read it, I think you’ll see why it is an important story:

http://interestingengineering.com/russian-weapon-can-shut-down-enemy-satellites/embed/?wmode=transparent#?secret=8fit4xG10G

The important points to note here are that (1) this weapon allegedly can simply “switch off” the electronics of cruise missiles (and presumably, any kind of missile) and of satellites, and (2) it’s ground based and flexible enough to be portable or sea-based. The ability to switch off electronics of satellites and missiles from the ground means quite simply that without countermeasures, all those GPS-based targeting systems in the West’s cruise missile, ICBM, and SLBM arsenals might be rendered about as accurate and effective as a 14th century bombard. More importantly, such an ability might imply also an ability to remotely reprogram the electronics of those systems. (And, for those really paying attention, that sounds an awful lot like those  1960s and 1970s UFO reports over US ICBM flights in Minot, Great Falls, Rapid City, and Cheyenne, where electronics systems would simply be shut down, and in some cases, the whole targeting ssystem would be reprogrammed).
