Fighting infection with conventional antibiotics is becoming a hopeless affair. The CDC recently warned these drugs are useless in combatting deadly “super germs.” So what can one do? Your kitchen holds the key.
Every day in this country, all day long, patients and doctors reach for conventional antibiotics when opportunistic infections present themselves. The fact that most infections are self-limiting (the body has an immune system, we often forget), and that antibacterial antibiotics are often administered for viral infections, against which they are useless and even infection-promoting, is rarely if ever acknowledged. There is also the problem that antibiotics themselves drive the growth of antibiotic resistant subpopulations of bacteria, effectively creating “super germs” in the process. This effect can adversely alter the microbial substrate for our health for months, years, and perhaps for our entire lifetime (and our progeny’s lifetimes).
The good news is that doctors and their patients are starting to wake up. The concept of taking a probiotic to promote health, for instance, is practically mainstream knowledge now. There is even compelling research that viruses in our body are essential to fight bacterial infections and cancer, and that viruses are so important that we should consider taking proviriotics (substances that feed their growth) to support our virally-base immunity. Watch Dr. Virgin’s amazing NIH lecture below to learn about the health-promoting role of viruses as members of the virome (the viral component of the microbiome) in the video below:
You can also read my article on how the discovery of the microbiome has demolished a key tenet of Germ Theory, namely, that viruses and bacteria are primarily pathogenic in nature: How The Microbiome Destroyed the Ego, Vaccine Policy, and Patriarchy.
And so, in the past few years, interest in evidence-based, natural alternatives, which provide safer and more effective relief, have increasingly expanded. Together, we are re-learning and remembering the wisdom of the ancients: let food be your medicine.
At GreenMedInfo.com, we have indexed a broad range of natural substances that have potent anti-microbial activity, including commonly available and inexpensive ‘kitchen remedies’ like honey, garlic, lemon, to name but a few. In actuality, thousands of natural substances have antimicrobial activity, which unlike conventional drugs, are far more capable of restoring balance within the microbiome. We have indexed hundreds of studies on this topic, all of which can be found on our Research Dashboard dedicated to Antibiotic Resistant Infection.
A relatively recent study adds to the already impressive body of research in this field. Titled “Comparing the Therapeutic Effects of Garlic Tablet and Oral Metronidazole on Bacterial Vaginosis: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial,” medical researchers demonstrated the power of garlic in treating bacterial vaginosis, one of the most common gynecological infections afflicting women of reproductive age today.
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) affects 29.2% of women aged 14-49, and 25% of pregnant women in the US, according to CDC statistics. According to the study,
“This infection is asymptomatic in 50% to 75% of cases and symptomatic cases present with homogeneous gray-white vaginal discharge with fishy odor, especially after intercourse or during menstruation”
It is believed that BV results from reduced quantities of hydrogen peroxide producing lactobacillus and increased anaerobic organisms such as Gardnerella vaginalis, Mycoplasma hominis, and Prevotella species. Antibiotics are notorious for lacking specificity in inhibiting only those opportunistic strains that can cause harm, which is why it is no wonder that the standard of care treatment of BV with metronidazole has a notoriously poor success rate.
Moreover, antibiotics like metronidazole come with a wide range of side effects, including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, dizziness weight loss, and abdominal pain.
Even more concerning is the fact that the drug has been identified as a potential carcinogen both by the US National Toxicology Program (NTP) and the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer.
The new study tested whether garlic could compete with metronidazole in treating BV. Garlic was a logical choice, since it has been used as an anti-infective agent for millennia, and has seen a tremendous amount of clinical validation in the past ten years, as evidenced by the literature on our Garlic Research Dashboard. You can also read previous reporting we have done on the topic of garlic’s immense value in addressing infections, such as Judy Cohain’s article on “How to Treat a Vaginal Infection with a Clove of Garlic.” Much of this research also demonstrates the potent anti-cancer properties of this powerfully medicinal food.
The design of the new study involved giving two groups of 60 married women (aged 18 to 44 years) either 500 mg garlic tablets comprised of 85.42% garlic powder, or metradizole. Each dose of garlic powder contained the equivalent of 8.9-mg allein, a potent antimicrobial compound. Both drugs were taken with meals at the dose of two tablets each 12 hours for seven days.
The two different treatments were evaluated using a diagnostic criteria showing active infection known as Amsel’s criteria. Not surprisingly, garlic was found superior to metronidazole at reducing infection at 70% and 48.3%, respectively. Additionally, garlic was found to have far lower side effects.
The researchers concluded:
“This study reveals that garlic could be a suitable alternative for metronidazole in treatment of BV in those interested in herbal medicines or those affected by side effects of metronidazole.”
Before the advent of modern, conventional medicine, the world over used natural substances – spices, foods, herbs – to prevent and reverse disease. In fact, so important and valued were these that they were sometimes traded for their weight in gold. Now we know that the ancients were not as “primitive, superstitious, or pre-scientific,” as widely believed, we can appreciate science that honors their wisdom. In fact, it was their use of these substances that enabled them to survive thousands of years without modern medicine, and it is the use of these substances that will now allow us to survive modern medicine itself, which has become a primary cause of death.
For more information on natural healing alternatives to common drugs view our database sections titled, “The Superiority of Natural Substances versus Drugs,” and “Natural Substances Equipotent To Drugs,” to see research comparing natural versus synthetic approaches to prevent and treat disease.
And of course, please use our Research Dashboard, which contains research on over 3,000 ailments that can prevented or treated naturally, as evidenced by published, peer-reviewed research culled from the National Library of Medicine’s database MEDLINE (accessible via pubmed.gov)

Indian herbs and spices are more than just a delicious way to enhance your favorite curry dishes. They’ve always been valued in some cultures for their healing properties, and now some of these herbs are being used to develop affordable drugs that can fight cancer with fewer side effects than traditional cancer medications.
Scientists at the BARC laboratory near Chembur are currently working hard on getting these promising solutions to the masses. One such herb is rampatri, which has earned the nickname “false nutmeg.” If you’re not familiar with Mangalorean or Goan cuisine, you might not be aware this spice even exists, but studies on mice show it to be a potent remedy against neuroblastoma and lung cancer. The herbal drug that is being developed from the spice reduces tumors, while boosting the effectiveness of other chemotherapy drugs that are taken concurrently.
Two of the other drugs in development include a radioprotector and a radiomodifier. The radiomodifier can enhance the effectiveness of radiotherapy while protecting the body’s tissues, gastrointestinal system, lungs and lymphocytes from radiation injury. The drug shows a lot of promise, and is currently awaiting a patent, after which it will undergo clinical trials in Parel.
The radioprotector is something that can be taken before and after exposure to radiation to minimize injuries and death. It could also help the public in the event of accidental exposure like that which affected many people following the nuclear explosion in Fukushima. Radiation exposure can affect a person’s reproductive organs, bone marrow and gastrointestinal system, but just one dose of the radioprotector being developed by BARC was shown to protect mice from all of these problems while boosting their lifespans.
BARC head, Dr. S. Chattopadhyay, said: “The pre-clinical results observed with the new radioprotector are better than any radioprotector discovered so far.”
This is very exciting news, but probably won’t come as much of a surprise to longtime Natural News readers. We’ve been reporting on the many benefits of turmeric, for example, for many years. Its active ingredient, curcumin, has been shown to help prevent various types of cancer such as colon, liver, lung, breast and stomach cancers, thanks to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric can also help prevent strokes and heart attacks because of its ability to thin the blood and prevent clotting. It’s also known to reduce LDL cholesterol levels, while raising “good” HDL cholesterol levels.
Ginger root is another powerful herb that is often used in Indian cooking. Some people are already aware if its ability to alleviate nausea and vomiting, but did you know that it can also help relieve migraines and protect the brain? In one study, it outperformed all of the currently known high blood pressure herbal remedies, and it can also support cardiovascular health.
If you pay attention, you will discover that nature has provided us with countless remedies to the problems our bodies face. And the best part is that many spices are affordable, easy to obtain, and have few – if any – side effects.
Experiment with spices and herbs to find a combination that is satisfying to your palate and beneficial to your body. Start your day with some black cumin seed oil mixed into honey, add a generous sprinkling of cinnamon to your oatmeal, sip some refreshing ginger tea, make a flavorful curry with turmeric or add some crushed, raw garlic to your salad.

You might have heard about the many health benefits of turmeric – or maybe you still think of this popular spice as only belonging in your spice rack. Either way, you may be surprised to find out that a simple combination of turmeric and honey (known as “golden honey”) is an extremely useful natural remedy, as recently reported by Natural News.
Turmeric has anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties that make it very good for your health. It is also able to destroy bacteria that cause diseases, aiding your body’s natural defense system. Combine turmeric with honey – which has its own antibacterial properties – and you have a pretty strong natural remedy. In fact, according to Healthy and Natural World, turmeric golden honey is considered to be the strongest natural antibiotic.
Combine 3.5oz of raw organic honey with one tablespoon of turmeric powder and mix well. Store in a sealable glass container.
As soon as you exhibit the first symptoms of cold or flu, start to take the remedy in the following quantities:
Turmeric actually melts away body fat, according to research from Tufts University in Boston. Scientists discovered that curcumin – which is the active ingredient in turmeric – reduced weight gain and total body fat in mice. Study authors explained: “By diminishing the sediment of fat, relaxing the lymphatic return, and refraining the apoptosis of beta cells, the curcumin might significantly decrease the level of insulin resistance and leptin resistance caused by the high fat diet.”
According to Bel Marra Health, turmeric is actually a natural pain reliever – again thanks to its powerful active ingredient, curcumin. Its antioxidant properties help to get rid of free radicals before they can do any damage, and also combat inflammation brought on by osteoarthritis, making turmeric a natural remedy for pain.
Turmeric is competitively effective when compared with a class of steroid medications known as corticosteroids which are used to manage chronic inflammation. Curcumin and resveratrol (also found in turmeric) can be helpful in the fight against tumor cells, by reducing their propensity to spread to other parts of the body, and reducing their ability to inflame local regions.
Various turmeric studies have been carried out using injectable forms of the spice – which is more bioaccessible than turmeric taken orally. According to Natural Health 365, researchers believe that curcumin has chemopreventive properties, helping it to combat cancers of the digestive tract, skin and mouth in animal studies. Curcumin not only triggers the activity of natural carcinogenic-detoxifying enzymes, but it also inhibits cancer calls from growing and spreading.
Since turmeric is one of the best natural anti-inflammatories you can consume, it is worth incorporating it into your diet on a regular basis. Check out the following amazing recipe for a spicy tropical smoothie; simply blend these ingredients together:

Most health enthusiasts watch what they eat in a major way, not realizing that they may not be vigilant enough in some key areas. Are you struggling to shed those last 10 pounds? Can’t seem to get enough energy for a good workout at the gym? Too tired before and after work to do much at all? Maybe the secret lies in the need for healthy food across the board, not just when considering the main courses you consume and the beverages of which you partake.
Those little “extras” are greatly underestimated in their power to bring you down, slow you down and actually minimize your potential. That’s right: the “man” sneaks poisons into just about anything he can, so when you overlook condiments and don’t “sweat the small stuff,” it just may be what’s sweating you. Maybe your mustard and fermented soy sauce are okay, but there’s a swath of toxic toppings you probably think don’t make up enough of what you consume to make a difference. Except … they do.
Do you ever watch videos where the speakers are raw foodists, or health “fanatics,” or just nutritional experts, and they seem to have a relentless supply of energy, a positive outlook, enthusiasm and passion for life and what they’re teaching? It’s not because they consume canola oil and soybean oil all day, and it’s certainly not because they drink water from the tap and put animal byproducts that contain hormones, antibiotics and harmful bacteria in their bodies. They’re not putting products in their bodies that have been processed, iodized, irradiated, brewed with chemicals, genetically modified or imported from China. Every little bit adds up, and you may want to evaluate everything you’re eating and drinking, including these top seven condiments that destroy health faster than most people would ever even consider.
#1. Most coffee creamers, whether liquid or powder: Liquid creamers often contain soy and carageenan, while the powders contain GMO soy, among other polluted ingredients.
#2. Artificial sweeteners: These sweet devils cause feelings of anxiety, nervousness, depression and for many others, irritable bowel syndrome.
#3. Most mayonnaise: Nearly every mayo on the shelves, including the organic options, contains pesticide-laden soybean and canola oils. It’s hard to find mayonnaise made with non-GMO sunflower oil or vegenaise. Your best bet is to follow a recipe and make your own organic mayonnaise with organic eggs, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and Dijon mustard.
#4. Most salad dressings, including organic, contain soy and canola oils: They’re flooding the shelves lately, and they’ll absolutely ruin your healthy salad. Don’t let it happen to you. Even organic soy is bad for humans. If soy is not fermented, don’t buy it. And canola oil comes from rapeseed, which is toxic to all animals. Let it go!
#5. Sour cream (loaded with hormones and antibiotics from CAFO cows): Sour cream is dairy based, and if the cows aren’t grass fed and living outside, eating normal organic food, then they’re living in confined animal feeding operations, getting jacked up with artificial growth hormones, shot up with antibiotics and crowded together, walking around in their own feces, with infected udders that produce pus-laden milk. Talk about a condiment that will bring you down and lead to inflammation and excess mucus. Avoid non-organic sour cream at all costs.
#6. Honey: Much of the “honey” sold in America is just HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) that’s genetically modified and/or imported and processed imitation honey from China. (Look for REAL honey from local, trusted sources.)
#7. Iodized salt (irradiated and raises blood pressure): You know how you always hear, “Too much sodium causes high blood pressure?” Well, they’re talking about iodized, irradiated salt, not sea salt, which contains lots of nutritious minerals. Avoid the white salt that’s in just about every shaker at every restaurant in America. Bring your own Himalayan sea salt with you when you go out to eat, and pop your own organic popcorn (with sea salt) and bag it for the movies!
A condiment is any sauce or spice that’s added to food in order to impart a certain flavor, or to enhance existing flavor. In some cultures, condiments complement the dish. The term originally described preserved or pickled foods, but the meaning has shifted over the years. Nearly every condiment at a restaurant, convenience store, work office break room, fast food joint or coffee shop contains ingredients that are processed, genetically modified to contain pesticides and detrimental to your health.
Any medical doctor will tell you that you worry too much, but any nutritional expert will tell you that it all adds up, and that there’s a reason every third person in America gets cancer in their lifetime, while half of the rest suffer from Alzheimer’s, heart disease, strokes, arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes and other totally preventable health issues.
Start “sweating” the small stuff. Examine all the condiments you’ve been using regularly, and switch them out for some healthy ones. You’ll notice a difference in the way you feel – guaranteed!

Many people who have had kidney stones report that passing them was the greatest pain they had ever experienced. Many women claim that it easily beats childbirth on the pain scale, and men can suffer even more due to the long length of their urethras.
Everybody hopes it won’t happen to them, but the National Kidney Foundation reports that one out of every 10 Americans will develop a kidney stone during their lifetime, leading more than 500,000 people to seek emergency medical treatment each year. It is also worth noting that men are at a higher risk than women. Kidney stones sometimes form without people realizing it, but when they become lodged on their way out, they make their presence known quickly and painfully.
If you happen to be part of that unlucky 10 percent – or are hoping to avoid becoming a member of this group – a powerful remedy can help you dissolve kidney stones on your own. Doctors typically suggest waiting for the stone to pass while dosing up on analgesics to minimize pain and drinking plenty of fluids to push the stone out. Some bigger stones might require surgery, however. If you want to keep yourself out of the hospital and avoid risking the infections that hospitals are infamous for, this potent natural solution should be your first course of action.
Putting it together is easy:
You’ll want to take one tablespoon of this concoction each morning on an empty stomach. You can store it in an airtight glass container in your refrigerator. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids through the rest of the day.
Lemons work to inhibit the growth of kidney stones because of their high content of citrates. This boosts your urine’s acidity, enabling it to dissolve kidney stones naturally. Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine urology expert John Milner said: “[Real] lemonade, not the powdered variety that uses artificial flavoring, actually slows the development of kidney stones for those who are prone to the development of kidney stones.”
The parsley root is another crucial component of this remedy, as it serves to increase your urinary output, thereby flushing out the kidneys and creating an alkaline environment that is unfriendly to the stones. It also helps cleanse the kidneys, remove toxins and dissolve uric acid.
The honey in this mixture will help soothe the irritation in the urethral lining and also provides antibiotic protection. Olive oil is included for its lubricating qualities, which will enable the stones to glide through your system more smoothly. The maple syrup is used to improve the taste of the liquid, making people more likely to stick with it long enough for it to dissolve the stones.
No matter what course of action you choose to take in approaching a kidney stone, you must make a point of drinking as much water as possible.
This simple remedy can also be used as a preventive measure, and even adding a squeeze of lemon juice to your water every day can help maintain kidney health. Keeping your kidneys in top shape is vital as they are responsible for filtering toxins and waste from your blood and regulating your body’s fluid levels. They also keep blood minerals such as phosphorous, sodium and potassium in balance. In fact, your kidneys actually filter all of the blood in your body every half hour! With so much hard work to do, the importance of keeping your kidneys in good condition cannot be overemphasized.

Zimbabwe’s beekeepers won’t let you go near their forest. Hundreds of their beehives are hidden within a dense patch of forest along the river in the Mpudzi Resettlement, and the beekeepers watch out for the trees just as vehemently as their bees.
They need to, since the country’s forests have been dwindling rapidly due to tobacco farmers cutting them down for wood to cure their crop. With this practice, the bees’ habitat is also destroyed.
Now, more than 50,000 beekeepers are helping to protect the forests from overcutting in Zimbabwe, a practice that had become commonplace, not just from Tobacco farmers’ practices, but also due to frequent power outages in nearby urban and pre-urban areas.
Fortunately, the profitability of beekeeping is quickly outpacing other, more destructive habits of Zimbabweans, such as the destruction of woodlots for tobacco.
The government is also supporting the protection of these bee habitats through a program that trains beekeepers by way of the Department of Agricultural Technical and Extension Services (Agritex). Beekeepers have a great incentive to protect the forests where hives hang from trees. They can make a fair living selling beeswax, honey, and other products. Around $60 per hive per season is not an uncommon return on their investment. Furthermore, a large portion of the country’s honey comes from bees that reside in old-growth forests.
One beekeeper, Divas Matinyadze, who has 47 beehives in the Mpudzi forest, states:
“As beekeepers we jealously look after the environment because beekeeping depends on good water sources and good forage for pollen. There are lots of trees where my beehives are.”
Without the beekeepers protecting the trees for the bees, a pristine habitat would continue to be destroyed at an alarming rate. Huge tracts of land were being demolished before the government of Zimbabwe intervened. At least one fifth of the country’s 330,000 hectares (815,448 acres) of natural forest are mowed down by tobacco farmers every year, according to Zimbabwe’s Forestry Commission.
Instead, the forests of Africa are making a comeback, which supports cleaner streams and less erosion.
These small creatures, bees, are a microcosmic view of the macrocosmic health of our planet. A Yale report states that one of every three bites of food eaten worldwide depends on pollinators, especially bees, for a successful harvest. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, these little winged workers pollinate 80 percent of our flowering crops, which constitute one-third of everything we eat. Plants depend on them for cross-pollination.
With bees increasingly being threatened due to corporate agricultural practices which poison them with pesticides, habitats like old-growth forests become even more vital for their survival.
This is simply a reminder that what is good for the bees is good for our ecology overall. Instead of desertification, ecological ruin, and the promotion of a cancer-crop, Zimbabwe is restoring nature’s balance by supporting the protection of bee habitats.
Matinyadze says, “These trees belong to my bees.”
He couldn’t be more right.

Have you ever heard of Tualang honey? It’s a kind of honey that surpasses any honey you’d find in the grocery store, offering a plethora of health benefits. Tualang honey is like delectable medicine.
I don’t know about you, but I never met a honey I didn’t love. Now, I know you’re supposed to limit your sugar intake, but honey is a deliciously sticky sweetener that actually comes with some health perks. But some honeys have more health benefits than others, of course. Not all honeys are created equal.
A highly prized healing potion in Malaysia, Tualang honey is a rare honey named for the trees in the rainforest from which it comes. It must be good, because people put their lives on the line to harvest it.
The bee that makes this type of honey builds its nests in the branches of tall Tualang trees measuring as high as 289 feet tall.
When the Malaysian rainforest blooms in spring, Asian honey bees, or Rock bees – Apis dorsata – make large, parabolic-shaped honey combs which hang from the high limbs of the Tualang trees. These bees are the largest honey bees in the world, and are about twice the size of the European honey bees you see in the United States.
During spring, a single Tualang tree can hold up to 100 hives, containing a combined weight of up to 992 pounds of honey.
When it’s time to harvest the honey, brave honey-hunters fashion smoke torches made out of dried coconut husk fiber wrapped in wide, green leaves. Then, they climb the trees using ropes and hand-holds. Usually, 1 hunter will climb while a ground crew of 2 or more collects the buckets of honey that are sent down to the ground attached to ropes.
Once up in the tree, the honey-hunter smokes the bees and takes much of the hive. Tualang honey hunters are typically pock-marked with bee sting scars.
These giant honey bees are known to be quite aggressive.
Since honey-hunters go deep into the rainforest and risk life and limb warding off massive bees at treetop level, Tualang honey ain’t cheap. The least inexpensive jar I could find online was $17.51 for 424 grams. One site was selling a jar of it for $90!
Did I mention Tualang honey comes from the rainforest? That means it comes from the nectars of many rainforest plants. Enormous medical breakthroughs have had their roots in the rainforest, no pun intended.
An extensive analysis of the honey found that it contains a concentration of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, antibacterial compounds, and other phytochemicals known to fight tumor growth and support cardiovascular health.
In fact, research published in the journal Toxicological & Environmental Chemistry found that Tualang honey can be “used as a supplement among those who are exposed to free radicals in cigarette smoke either as active or passive smokers in order to protect or reduce the risk of having cardiovascular disease.”
Tualang honey has also found to be comparable to the chemotherapy drug Tamoxifen for treating breast cancer.
In Malaysia, people use Tualang honey as a daily health tonic by mixing a teaspoon of it in a couple ounces of water.
It is also used as a topical aid used by native people to heal wounds, and to kill bacteria in skin infections.
Tualang honey is great for relieving a sore throat and soothing cold symptoms. A modest amount has even been shown to stabilize blood sugar and lower blood pressure.
Tualang honey is best found online; however, some stores specializing in Southeast Asian food products may also carry it.

Honey, often referred to as “liquid gold,” houses a wide range of vitamins and minerals. It is a natural and healthier alternative to sugar to sweeten things up. It kills bacteria, viruses and fungi. It also lowers cholesterol and inflammation.
However, to reap all of honey’s benefits, you should always buy local and organic, which comes from bees rather than from a factory. According to Food Safety News, more than 75 percent of honey sold in U.S. grocery stores isn’t actually the same thing honey bees produce.
They sent over 60 different jars bought in 10 states and the District of Columbia to premier melissopalynologist and professor at Texas A&M University, Vaughn Bryant. They found the market to be flooded with fake Indian or Chinese honey which is banned in Europe for safety reasons. It is often contaminated with antibiotics or heavy metals, and doesn’t contain any trace of pollen.
“Any product that’s been ultra-filtered and no longer contains pollen isn’t honey,” states the FDA. However, nothing seems to be done about it, and fake, processed honey is still sold in grocery stores all over the U.S.
In the normal honey-making process, honey is filtered to remove contaminants, such as bee parts, waxes and other impurities. Nothing wrong there; nobody wants to chew on bee parts or wax, right?
Ultra-filtration, a technique refined by the Chinese, is a high-tech procedure in which honey is heated and pushed through extremely fine filters at high pressure. This technique not only removes contaminants, but pushes out the pollen and many other beneficial vitamins, minerals and enzymes, too.
Why would a company go through all these expensive filtration steps to end up with an inferior product, ripped of all its nutrients?
“Removal of all pollen from honey ‘makes no sense’ and is completely contrary to marketing the highest quality product possible,” Mark Jensen, president of the American Honey Producers Association, told Food Safety News.
