To Steve Bannon, Trump’s inside man for policy and innovation.

The subject: actually solving the water-shortage problem in California and other places.

Government bureaucrats and leaders are psychotically obsessed with maintaining their tight grip on a problem, massaging it, adoring it, arguing about it, figuring out how they can enhance their reputations by funding unworkable solutions—you know, the usual.

Anything except coming up with a useful practical answer.

This is why, in California, it’s taken 15-20 years to start building a desalination plant in Carlsbad that will take the salt out of seawater. Are these politicians idiots? Is the Pope Catholic?

So, Steve, I point you to an October 29, 2015 article in Fortune, “This billionaire wants to solve California’s water problem,” by Brittany Shoot:

“Manoj Bhargava, the man behind 5-Hour Energy, believes his affordable desalination technology can equally help wealthy Californians and poor Indians.”

“Take the Rain Maker, a desalination unit roughly the size of a flatbed truck that relies on a conventional power source to distill seawater into freshwater well beyond Environmental Protection Agency guidelines. A single Rain Maker can be placed in a town with a wastewater plant. In a crisis, hundreds could be stacked on an ocean barge to process seawater. Coastal desalination facilities typically cost billions to construct and require massive amounts of energy. Could the Rain Maker, produced at industrial scale, pull California back from the brink of disaster? The forecast looks promising. Regulators at the Brackish Groundwater National Desalination Research Facility, a testing facility administered in New Mexico by the Department of the Interior, have given it a stamp of approval.”

Getting the picture, Steve? Doesn’t this sound worth exploring?

Your man, Trump, has sent signals that he wants to introduce, into moribund gridlocked government, solutions that bypass the official structure of embedded morons who keep finding new ways to get nothing done.

Well, here’s one. Contact Manoj Bhargava, the 5-Hour Energy owner, and work something out. Find out if his system really operates without glitches. Looking into his method, I believe Mr. Bhargava and his technicians are prepared to a) answer any and all questions about the validity of their work and its cost-effectiveness, and b) provide demonstrations that can be checked and analyzed by independent scientists.

If the Bhargava method does work, and California Governor Jerry Brown comes up with a way to try to stop you, I would favor sending in the DHS. They might actually do something helpful in the way of “securing the homeland.” I think the untold numbers of farmers in California who’ve seen their growing operations collapse deserve immediate help. I’m sure you could act as an intermediary between a group of these growers and Mr. Bhargava.

Think of it. Horrible drought problem. No rain. Crops dying. Farmers going out of business. The state government of California does nothing about it except moan and whine and avoid and warn and cut water usage.

—Then, assuming Bhargava’s system works, you step in and solve the whole thing.

The horrible case of bureaucratic depression you’d engender by this act would be worth the price of admission.

And simultaneously, the upward surge of positive emotion across the country would send a message that your administration means business—and all is not lost. Far from it.

***Face it, Steve, the powers-that-be and their little government helpers are determined to SHOWCASE drought as an inevitable consequence of “manmade global warming.” They want to keep shoving drought into people’s faces to prove their fraudulent climate-change “science” is valid. Their prime agenda involves continued water shortages.

Suppose you, on the other hand, can move in and make the shortage go away, help the farmers, and all the people who eat what the farmers grow?

And suppose, as you do this, Trump live-streams info direct to the American people, bypassing media, and details the efforts to block getting water to California farmers? He names names, he shows how they don’t actually want to solve the problem.

That would be a win-win.

Except for the bureaucratic losers, who richly deserve their fate.

Show a bureaucrat a real solution to a serious problem and he feels naked and afraid. He’s unaccustomed to true answers. He feels as if his life is threatened.

But that’s his issue, not ours.

We don’t have to grant any value to his mindset.

Why can’t abundance, rather than scarcity, compose the foundation of a better future?

Environmental Group Establishes Training Centers To Educate Farmers About Organic Growing Techniques

One of the most damaging impacts humans are having on the environment is caused by Big Agri food production. According to The Star, the Pesticide Action network Asia and the Pacific (known as Panap) is starting a “multiversity” with the goal of showing farmers how to produce food without relying upon pesticides.

Pesticides are widely used across Africa and according to The Guardian, their use is also on the rise in Asia. This use of hazardous chemicals is causing severe damage to both the environment and health of local communities – potentially costing sub-Saharan Africa $90 billion by 2020 in pesticide-related illnesses.

Named the “International People’s Agroecology Mulitversity,” this fantastic movement comprises 10 field-learning sites in Asia and one in Africa which offer farmers the opportunity to see how it’s done.

Cutting pesticide use can boost yields

According to The Conversation, cutting pesticide use has actually worked to boost yields in Asia and Africa. Recent research has shown that farmers in Asia and Africa have been able to cut the use of pesticides whilst boosting crop yields, reducing costs and delivering healthier profits.

Each kilogram of pesticide used in agriculture causes between $4 – $19 of external economic costs on the environment, wildlife and human health. Any reduction in their use saves farmers money. And all it takes is a different approach to farming practices.

All pests have natural predators and parasites that farmers can use along with their farm management to minimize or even replace synthetic pesticides, according to The Conversation. This is known as integrated pest management, an approach that is focused on manipulating the crop ecosystem rather than simply wiping out pests.

These natural farming strategies can actually increase crop yields while reducing the need for pesticides – and there are other sustainable approaches to agriculture that mean the farmer gets more and the environment wins. These include a focus on soil, water, tree or livestock management.

The International People’s Agroecology Multiversity

Panap executive director V. R. Sarojeni has explained that the sites are training centers or “campuses” made up of farms, NGOs, institutions and universities that offer on-site learning and collaboration on ecological farming methods, innovations and techniques, as reported by The Star.

According to Sarojeni, “last year, researchers from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia found several types of pesticide in all of Cameron Highlands’ river and tap water… We understand the economic risks farmers take if they don’t use pesticides, but the rampant use of such chemicals cannot go on.”

Sarojeni went on to explain that as well as harming species that are not pests, the long-term low-level exposure to such poisons in the food chain has been proven to cause people to suffer from reduced immunity, problems with organ functionality and interrupted hormone production.

Bayer Wants To Merge With Monsanto Et Voila: I.G….

BAYER WANTS TO MERGE WITH MON(STER)SANTO…ET VOILA: I.G. ...

Here’s one that so many sent me I’ve simply got to blog about it, especially since we track the GMO issues from time to time on this website. In this case, this one is of particular interest to me, since a few years ago I “predicted” that what we were witnessing, and would witness in the future, is the creation of a kind of “IG Farben” of the GMO world, “I.G. Farbensanto”, I called it. Well, lo and behold, the German chemicals/genetics giant, Bayer – one of the original “small” corporations, along with BASF(Bayrischen Analin und Soda Fabrik), and Hoechst that went to make up the giant inter-war and wartime German chemicals cartel that became almost synonymous with the “Nazi military-industrial complex” – wants to buy Mon(ster)santo:

Why a Bayer-Monsanto merger would be bad news for anyone who farms — or eats

Of course, since this story broke about a week ago, Mon(ster)santo rejected Bayer’s initial offer, but the talks are ongoing. And in this context, recall only last year that Syngenta and Mon(ster)santo were in similar talks. The concern in the article is a concern we share here on this website, for the end result of all of this merger activity has been the reduction of biodiversity, as competitor’s seeds are taken off the market, allowing IG Farbensanto, like all cartels inevitably do, to drive up prices, and further consolidate control:

The consolidation of two big industry players may also limit farmer choice and bargaining power, with increasing seed prices expected to be passed on to the grocery aisles.

Farmers Sue Monsanto Over Allegations Of Cancer

May 26, 2016

Four Nebraska farmers are now suing the agricultural giant Monsanto because they believe the herbicide Roundup has caused them to develop cancer. The farmers feel that Monsanto did not give them accurate information about the safety of Roundup and that their non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is directly linked to daily exposure to the chemicals in the herbicide.

Glyphosate is one of the main ingredients in Roundup, which is made to kill weeds in fields without damaging the crops. Roundup is so common that up to 90% of soybeans in the U.S. are routinely sprayed with the herbicide. Although Monsanto claims that Roundup is safe, there are many questions about whether this is actually the case.

Studies have indicated that people who were regularly exposed to glyphosate were at an increased risk for developing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. [1]

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization (WHO) did its own study on glyphosate, using only publicly available studies, and found it was a “probable” human carcinogen. The link was not called “conclusive” because glyphosate is found in trace amounts in many foods and in drinking water, but individuals who consume glyphosate in small amounts don’t appear to have higher instances of cancer.

In response, Monsanto had a team of scientists investigate the matter. The Monsanto-hired researchers concluded that glyphosate does not cause cancer, even if someone is exposed to the chemical in very high amounts.

While the farmers are suing for damages, a Monsanto representative says, “While we have sympathy for the plaintiffs, the science simply does not support their claims.”

However, representatives for the farmers do not agree, stating,

“Monsanto championed falsified data and has attacked legitimate studies that revealed Roundup dangers.”

The lawsuit further states:

“Monsanto led a campaign of misinformation to convince government agencies, farmers and the general population that Roundup is safe. Its continuing denial extends to the date of this Complaint.”

As Demand Skyrockets, Thousands of US Farms Are Going Organic

Cost-Co, General Mills, Ardent Rush For Organic Farmland

April 16, 2016

Organic food demand is so booming that multiple efforts are underway to support the acquisition of organic farmland. Even Cost-Co is getting in on the action by offering to help farmers buy land and farm equipment. People’s huge appetite for organics has been ignored by Big Ag for so long that land to grow food organically in the U.S. is rather scarce. Currently, organic farming acres make up less than one percent of total U.S. farmland. Instead of growing our own, we’re importing a bunch of organic corn, soy, and other products every year.

This trend of people wanting organic products seems to be growing, too. U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics show that in 2014, certified organic operations in the U.S. had reached an astonishing number of 19,474, while a total of 27,814 certified organic operations exist around the world. Other studies report that another 3,000 farms are transitioning to organic. The word is out – individuals everywhere are quickly switching to organic.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says:

“As demand for organic products continues to soar, more and more producers are entering the organic market. USDA tools and resources have created opportunities for organic farmers and more options for organic consumers. Growing demand for organic goods can be especially helpful to smaller family operations. The more diverse type of operations and the more growing market sectors we have in American agriculture, the better off our country’s rural economy will be.”

Cost-Co’s CEO, Craig Jelinek, says that the way things are now, the company simply can’t keep up with the demand for organic food, which is why the company is offering to ‘help’ farmers. Though this bodes well for organics overall, it could put small family farms in the crosshairs of big business again, which hasn’t been an auspicious enterprise for organic farmers thus far.

image-organic-farm-map

Other retailers are trying their own methods to keep up with organic product demand. They offer loan programs for suppliers to upgrade equipment or offer financial incentives such as advance payments or long-term contracts. But helping farmers buy land to grow organics, as Cost Co has, is unusual in the industry.

Costco Gets Creative To Meet Shoppers’ Huge Appetite For Organics

To boost its supply of organic foods, Costco is trying something new: It’s working with farmers to help them buy land and equipment as it struggles to keep pace with customer demand.

At Costco’s recent shareholder meeting, CEO Craig Jelinek touted the vast amounts of food the company sold last year, from 83 million rotisserie chickens to $6.1 billion worth of produce.

As for organics, one of the fastest-growing categories in food sales and one in which Costco has become a major player?

“We cannot get enough organics to stay in business day in and day out,” Jelinek told the gathered investors.

What Costco is doing to build its food supply

Among the initiatives:

• Lending money to farmers to buy land to grow organics

• Raising chickens at its poultry plant in Alabama

• Working with Mexican vendor to get wild shrimp

• Contracting with Nebraskan farmers to raise cattle on organic fields

Source: Costco

So to boost its supply, Costco is trying something new: It’s working with farmers to help them buy land and equipment to grow organics.

The effort is still in its infancy. So far, Costco is working with just one partner, loaning money to help San Diego-based Andrew and Williamson Fresh Produce buy equipment and 1,200 acres of land in the Mexican state of Baja California.

But Costco is looking at expanding the initiative. The idea is to ensure a greater supply of organic foods at a time when demand is soaring but supply has not kept up.

While other retailers might have loan programs for suppliers to upgrade equipment or offer financial incentives such as advance payments or long-term contracts, helping farmers buy land to grow organics appears to be unusual in the industry.

The nascent program joins a list of other Costco food initiatives that try to ensure the warehouse giant can meet the voluminous demand of its customers.ff
