Triclosan has been a prized ingredient in Colgate toothpastes for a number of years now. While its use in antibacterial soaps has been banned by the FDA, somehow this chemical has managed to retain its approval for use in toothpaste.

According to the FDA, substantial and convincing evidence of triclosan’s benefits in toothpaste has been presented. Because the evidence indicates it is indeed effective against gum inflammation and plaque, it will be allowed to remain in toothpaste. The FDA claims that it will monitor research on the safety of triclosan on a consistent basis, but so far, “medical literature does not change the risk benefit assessment for Colgate Total Toothpaste.”

However, over the years, research has indicated that triclosan may contribute to antibiotic resistance and hormone disruption, and it may also negatively effect immunity and contribute to cancer development. Most recently, a joint research effort led by researchers from the University of California’s San Diego and Davis campuses found that the chemical agent’s effects on health may be more sinister than we’re being led to believe.

The paper, boldly titled “The Commonly Used Antimicrobial Additive Triclosan is a Liver Tumor Promoter,” was published in 2015 by the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. NIEHS-funded scientists Robert Tukey, director of the Superfund Research Program at University of California (UC) San Diego, and Bruce Hammock, director of the UC Davis Superfund Research Program, spearheaded the study. The study leaders say that their findings contribute to previous reports of triclosan disrupting hormones and impairing muscle contractions.

To conduct their study, the researchers exposed mice to triclosan for a period of six months, which equates to about 18 human years. While animal testing is not something to be condoned, the results of this study were nonetheless shocking. The researchers found that mice exposed to triclosan exhibited cell proliferation, liver fibrosis and pro-inflammatory responses – all the trappings of a perfect environment for cancer growth, according to the scientists.

The team also found that triclosan had profound impacts on liver tumor growth. Mice with liver tumors that were exposed to triclosan showed a profound increase in tumor size, frequency and multiplicity when compared to unexposed mice.

Kathy Keatley Garvey from UC’s Entomology & Nematology News writes, “Hammock said the findings suggest that triclosan’s negative effects on the liver may result from interference with the constitutive androstane receptor, which plays a role in clearing foreign chemicals from the body.”

Tumor growth is just one of many concerns surrounding triclosan. The chemical agent has also come under fire for other negative health effects, such as its impact on muscle function and skeletal muscle contractions. A previous study out of UC reported that triclosan exposure reduced cardiac function by up to 25 percent – the scientists noted that this effect was “really dramatic.” It certainly sounds rather concerning, doesn’t it?

The researchers also exposed human muscle cells to an amount of the chemical equivalent to average exposure. They found that even in normal amounts, triclosan impeded muscle function, and could even cause cardiac and skeletal muscle failure. The study authors noted, “[Triclosan is] found in virtually everyone’s home and is pervasive in the environment. These findings provide strong evidence that the chemical is of concern to both human and environmental health.”

Even Consumer Reports seems to be suspicious of triclosan’s actual value to consumers. Their chief medical adviser, Dr. Marvin M. Lipman, has said that unless your dentist recommends you use triclosan-containing toothpaste, it would be best avoided.

“There’s enough concern now with triclosan ubiquity and safety that it makes sense to avoid it on your own, even if there is some demonstrable value at reducing plaque and gingivitis.”

Garlic Versus First-Line Antibiotic for Vaginal Infection

A relatively recent study adds to the already impressive body of research in this field. Titled “Comparing the Therapeutic Effects of Garlic Tablet and Oral Metronidazole on Bacterial Vaginosis: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial,” medical researchers demonstrated the power of garlic in treating bacterial vaginosis, one of the most common gynecological infections afflicting women of reproductive age today.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) affects 29.2% of women aged 14-49, and 25% of pregnant women in the US, according to CDC statistics.  According to the study,

“This infection is asymptomatic in 50% to 75% of cases and symptomatic cases present with homogeneous gray-white vaginal discharge with fishy odor, especially after intercourse or during menstruation”

It is believed that BV results from reduced quantities of hydrogen peroxide producing lactobacillus and increased anaerobic organisms such as Gardnerella vaginalis, Mycoplasma hominis, and Prevotella species. Antibiotics are notorious for lacking specificity in inhibiting only those opportunistic strains that can cause harm, which is why it is no wonder that the standard of care treatment of BV with metronidazole has a notoriously poor success rate.[1]

Moreover, antibiotics like metronidazole come with a wide range of side effects, including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, dizziness weight loss, and abdominal pain.

Even more concerning is the fact that the drug has been identified as a potential carcinogen both by the US National Toxicology Program (NTP)[2] and the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer.[3]

The new study tested whether garlic could compete with metronidazole in treating BV. Garlic was a logical choice, since it has been used as an anti-infective agent for millennia, and has seen a tremendous amount of clinical validation in the past ten years, as evidenced by the literature on our Garlic Research Dashboard. The design of the new study involved giving two groups of 60 married women  (aged 18 to 44 years) either 500 mg garlic tablets comprised of 85.42% garlic powder, or metradizole. Each dose of garlic powder contained the equivalent of 8.9-mg allein, a potent antimicrobial compound.  Both drugs were taken with meals at the dose of two tablets each 12 hours for seven days.

The two different treatments were evaluated using a diagnostic criteria showing active infection known as Amsel’s criteria. Not surprisingly, garlic was found superior to metronidazole at reducing infection at 70% and 48.3%, respectively. Additionally, garlic was found to have far lower side effects.

The researchers concluded:

“This study reveals that garlic could be a suitable alternative for metronidazole in treatment of BV in those interested in herbal medicines or those affected by side effects of metronidazole.”

Twenty years have passed since environmental activist Erin Brockovich first discovered the presence of hexavalent chromium, a known human carcinogen, in the water supply in Hinkley, California.

Brockovich’s journey into environmental activism and the discovery of hexavalent chromium in the water supply was showcased in the popular biographical film “Erin Brockovich,” in which actress Julia Roberts plays the activist.

The toxin was introduced into the water supply by the chemical industry and is known to cause nasal and sinus cancers, kidney and liver damage and irritation to the skin and eyes, according to the National Toxicology Program.

Regulators slow to act to protect public from harmful chemical found in drinking water

Despite the massive awareness generated about the dangers of hexavalent chromium in Americans’ water supply, regulators in various U.S. states have been slow to act, doing little to protect the public from the chemical.

On Tuesday, August 16, Brockovich and the Environmental Working Group penned a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) urging them to set a federal Maximum Contaminant Level for hexavalent chromium in drinking water.

“We write with deep concern about this continued delay. It is clear that the delay is sowing confusion among state and local regulators, utilities and the public about how much hexavalent chromium is safe in drinking water,” states the letter.

“This confusion is resulting many Americans’ exposure to unregulated levels of hexavalent chromium, which federal, state and independent scientists agree pose health hazards.”

The environmentalists say the government’s “regulation of hexavalent chromium is woefully inadequate” as federal standards for the chemical have not been updated in more than 25 years.

Standards for hexavalent chromium are extremely outdated, say environmentalists

In 1991, the federal government established a MCL for hexavalent chromium of 100 µg/L for total chromium. The letter states that “numerous studies and reviews” show this MCL is “far too high to protect human health.”

Research shows the carcinogen is dangerous to humans at “extremely low concentrations,” the environmentalists say.

“Yet the MCL is only for total chromium, not just hexavalent chromium. Hexavalent chromium or chromium-6 is far more toxic than trivalent chromium, or chromium-3, the other commonly occurring form of the chemical.”

“Setting an MCL maximum level for these two kinds of chromium combined conflates the individual risk of each chemical and allows for legally permissible hexavalent chromium levels that do not adequately protect public health.”

Hexavalent chromium harmful at low concentrations

The letter encourages the EPA to instead set an MCL that’s specific to hexavalent chromium in order to “more accurately reflect the actual level of risk posed” by the chemical.

California is the only state to implement “an enforceable legal limit” for the toxin in drinking water, which is set at 10 µg/L – ten times lower than the federal standard for total chromium.

The level set by California’s Public Health Goal (PHG), which aims to protect against cancer and other diseases caused by a lifetime of consuming harmful substances, is set even lower at 0.02 µg/L.

“The MCL at 10 µg/L is inadequate to protect public health, in light of the 500-fold gap between the PHG and the MCL.7 Nonetheless, the MCL provides unambiguous guidance to regulators, utilities and citizens on the legally acceptable level of hexavalent chromium in drinking water,” the letter states.

The letter comes on the heels of controversy in North Carolina over Gov. Pat McCrory’s effort to withdraw “do-not-drink” warnings for residents whose tap water is likely to be polluted with hexavalent chromium.

The chemical is believed to have entered people’s well water through processes at the nearby Duke Energy coal-burning facilities. The inadequate MCL set by the federal government places citizens at risk for harm in areas such as North Carolina where dangerous industrial byproducts such as coal ash routinely make its way into the water.

Some people have severe allergies to nuts, dairy, gluten, MSG or aspartame – and the list goes on. Other people just want to avoid processed and synthetic ingredients that damage health, deplete energy, or simply cause headaches and stomach aches. Some folks just don’t want to get fat so they avoid sugar, saturated fats, artificial sweeteners and hydrogenated oils. But what if you found out that most depression and anxiety is caused by toxins in food, water and medications?

#1. Flu shots: Influenza vaccines often contain shocking amounts of mercury (listed as thimerosal), MSG, formaldehyde (embalming fluid for the dead) and aluminum (major cause of Alzheimer’s disease).

#2. Vaccines: The MMR vaccine has been implicated as a major cause of autism, and the HPV vaccine causes girls to go into anaphylactic shock and comas. Watch out! Read the vaccine package insert ingredients and warnings and you’ll probably never consider a toxic jab of any kind again!

Read every single label and every single ingredient on everything you consume, and filter out every chemical you can find. If you can’t eat it, it doesn’t belong on your skin, hair or nails either. You shouldn’t have to inject medicine into muscle tissue to build immunity. Immunity comes naturally from consuming organic foods, herbs and superfoods. Ask a naturopathic physician to run a hair (or urine) analysis for you to determine if you have allergies to certain ingredients or vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Concerns about the human health effects of perpetual exposure to environmental toxins often get dismissed or ignored by health authorities on the grounds that such chemicals don’t stick around inside the body long enough to cause problems. But a new report by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) – the first of its kind – suggests quite the opposite, and could help explain why rates of cancer and other chronic diseases continue to skyrocket in the developed world.

Researchers from the respected environmental watchdog group spent upwards of a year poring through data compiled from more than 1,000 biomonitoring studies, as well as other research published by leading government agencies and independent scientists, and came to some shocking conclusions. They found that as many as 420 unique chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer, are now being detected in human blood, urine, hair and other tissue samples, demonstrating not only that carcinogens are everywhere, but that they’re also permeating our bodies at an alarming rate.

The bulk of existing cancer research focuses almost exclusively on tobacco, alcohol and sun exposure as the alleged primary causes of cancer, at the exclusion of the literally thousands of chemicals that have been scientifically shown to cause cancer. Even the World Health Organization (WHO) agrees that 20 percent of cancers – or one in five cases – are a result of chemical and/or environmental exposure, not cigarettes, booze and ultraviolet rays.

Reinforcing other ongoing research of a similar nature, like that of the Halifax Project – a collaboration of more than 300 scientists from around the world who are investigating the cancer-causing effects of common chemicals – the new EWG findings are sure to raise some eyebrows within the realm of public health. At the very least, what this research shows is that not nearly enough investigation has taken place with regard to chemical safety, and that the general public faces unknown risks from this lack of proper scrutiny.

“The presence of a toxic chemical in our bodies does not necessarily mean it will cause harm, but this report details the astounding number of carcinogens we are exposed to in almost every part of life that are building up in our systems,” stated Curt DellaValle, author of the report and a senior scientist at EWG.

“At any given time some people may harbor dozens or hundreds of cancer-causing chemicals. This troubling truth underscores the need for greater awareness of our everyday exposure to chemicals and how to avoid them.”

Compounded toxicity, an often overlooked aspect of carcinogenic exposure

Another issue addressed by the report is the lack of safety research on chemicals in combination with one another. The combined toxicity of multiple chemicals in tandem – a common occurrence in many consumer products – is a major unknown when it comes to long-term health effects, especially in developing unborn children still inside their mothers’ wombs.

“Many of the carcinogens this study documents in people find their way into our bodies through food, air, water and consumer products every day. Dozens of them show up in human umbilical cord blood—which means Americans are exposed to carcinogens before they’ve left the womb,” says EWG president, Ken Cook.

“We should focus on preventing cancer by preventing human exposure to these chemicals.”

As we’ve reported in the past, the federal Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) in its current form lacks the necessary regulatory teeth required to accurately assess the safety of chemicals, especially the effects of combined chemical exposure. As it stands, thousands of chemicals have been “grandfathered” into use without having been properly safety tested by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a direct result of TSCA’s failed guidelines.

Chemical pesticides growing inside the produce (GMO): Molecular engineers working in biotechnology laboratories are gene-splicing fruit and vegetable seedlings with poisonous pesticides and herbicides so the plants are inherently protected from the insects and worms that might damage them. The majority of products Americans eat daily contain some form of GMO soy, corn, canola (rapeseed) oil or cotton seed oil. Research shows that consuming GMOs and the popular herbicide Roundup leads to the mutation of cells in the human body, in turn fueling the development of malignant tumors and other various forms of cancer.

#4. #6. Carrageenan: An emulsifier, gelling and thickening agent that coagulates over time and can cause dangerous lesions in the digestive tract and excretive systems of humans. Permitted even in organic products, carrageenan is derived from a red seaweed compound in products like yogurt, coffee creamer, sour cream, cottage cheese, ice creams, soy milk, almond milk and coconut milk. Research shows that degraded carrageenan triggers inflammation, causes ulceration, and leads to malignancies in the gastrointestinal tract, including lesions, cancer and digestive disorders.

#7. Decaffeination process for coffee: Often involves soaking coffee beans in the toxic chemical benzene to dissolve the caffeine. Continual benzene exposure leads to neurological symptoms. Brazilians Poisoned To Death As 70 Percent Of Crops Are Treated With Pesticides Banned In Other Nations

Pesticide exposure is a very real problem around the world, but nowhere is it felt more strongly than in Brazil. In a lecture at the Health Movement Forum last week, Brazilian Association of Collective Health Researcher Karen Friedrich announced that approximately 70 percent of the food that Brazilians eat has been contaminated by agrochemicals.

Friedrich revealed that Brazilians actually consume almost 7.5 liters of agropesticides each year, which means they have the dubious honor of having the highest per capita rate of agropesticide consumption in the world.

To add insult to injury, she pointed out that at least a third of these agrochemicals are banned in the U.S. and the European Union because of their health and environmental impacts.

Scientist Leonardo Melgarejo expressed concern that Brazilian lawamkers are overly influenced by powerful agricultural lobbying groups and have been undermining efforts to rein in the use of these toxic chemicals.

In fact, the country’s congress is reviewing a bill that replaces the word “pesticide” on packaging with the euphemism “plant health protection”. Melgarejo feels this would only heighten the risks of these chemicals.

Apparently the lawmakers are unconcerned by the fact that the World Health Organization released a report stating that glyphosate, which is commonly found in pesticides and herbicides, is a probably carcinogen. That key piece of information should have led them to make the terminology on these labels stronger, not softer.

The Brazilian Health Ministry first started keeping records in 2007. In that year, the reported number of human pesticide intoxication cases was 2,178. By 2013, the number had more than doubled to 4,537. The annual number of fatalities from pesticide poisoning rose during the same time from 132 to 206. It is believed that these figures could actually be much higher because tracking is not very thorough.

Friedrich said: “The cases of contamination are not well documented, but they affect a large portion of the population, generating reproductive changes, birth defects and effects on the immune system.”

Brazil’s track record with pesticides and GMOs is very poor

After an analysis of 1,665 samples in 2014, the Brazilian health agency ANVISA discovered that 29 percent showed residues that were in excess of the permitted levels or contained chemicals that were unapproved. Some of the foods studied included apples, peppers, and rice.

None of this should come as much of a surprise in a country where a former Monsanto lawyer regulates the flow of GMOs. His advice enabled the approval of GM maize despite strong opposition and Monsanto’s inability to prove that it was safe for human consumption.

Last year, hundreds of thousands of Brazilians took to the streets to demand President Dilma Rousseff’s dismissal on the grounds of corruption. While her implication in a kickback scheme that involved the state-run oil company Petrobras was the straw that broke the camel’s back, ill will had been building for quite some time over the general corruption taking place at all levels of the Brazilian government. It appears the Brazilian government can be bought, and Big Ag has very deep pockets.

How to minimize pesticide exposure

Unfortunately, this problem is not limited to Brazil. Governments around the world have varying levels of tolerance when it comes to pesticides, and avoiding them completely can be an extremely difficult task no matter where you live.

If the government cannot be trusted to protect you from dangerous substances, what can you do to try to minimize the damage from pesticide exposure, particularly if growing your own food is not an option?

All fruits and vegetables should be washed thoroughly before consumption. A simple spray can be created by combining a cup of water with a tablespoon each of lemon juice and white vinegar in a spray bottle. The solution should be sprayed on the produce and then allowed to sit for around ten minutes before being washed off to rinse away the residue. Activated charcoal, meanwhile, can be taken to help flush toxins out of the body.
