Europe is still scrambling to reach a decision regarding the relicensing of glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup, which was declared “probably carcinogenic” by the World Health Organization last spring. If European Union nations fail to reach an agreement by the end of June, the license for glyphosate will expire. As a result, application of the widely used herbicide will be completely withdrawn from Europe within six months, Natural News has reported.

The European Commission originally proposed renewing the license for 15 years, but failed to garner support following uproar from environmentalists that meticulously outlined the severe health and environmental effects associated with glyphosate.

In response, the EU suggested renewing the herbicide for 12–18 months while the European Chemicals Agency completes a “scientific study” it hopes will lay mounting concerns regarding the safety of glyphosate to rest.

But that won’t work either, because it’s too late. The science on glyphosate is already in, and everyone knows it. Research shows that even ultra-low dose exposure to the chemical has the ability to permanently alter DNA, according to recent studies.

The science on glyphosate is already in: It’s toxic to humans, the environment and it needs to be banned!

The EU’s proposal to extend the license for glyphosate for 12–18 months “failed to win the qualified majority needed for adoption,” Reuters has reported. Seven member states abstained from the vote, while 20 backed the proposal.

Bart Staes, a spokesman for Green environment and food safety applauded the EU governments that stuck to their guns and refused to authorize the toxic herbicide. “There are clear concerns about the health risks with glyphosate, both as regards it being a carcinogen and an endocrine disruptor.

“Moreover, glyphosate’s devastating impact on biodiversity should have already led to its ban. Thankfully, the significant public mobilization and political opposition to re-approving glyphosate has been taken seriously by key EU governments, who have forced the EU Commission to back down,” said Staes.

Technically, the EU may “submit its proposal to an appeal committee of political representatives of the 28 member states within a month.” And if that doesn’t work, the European Commission could adopt its own policy.

‘Three strikes must mean the approval of glyphosate is finally ruled out’

However, Staes argues that three failed attempts to reach an agreement regarding the relicensing of glyphosate means the Commission “must stop continuing to try and force through the approval of glyphosate. Such a move would raise major democratic concerns about the EU’s decision-making process.

“The process of phasing out glyphosate and other toxic herbicides and pesticides from agriculture must begin now, and this means reorienting the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy towards a more sustainable agricultural model,” said Staes.

In April, the European Parliament issued a non-binding resolution to renew the license for glyphosate for another seven years. The resolution recommended that glyphosate be used for professional use only, withdrawing its application on parks, playgrounds and gardens open to the public.

The proposal was passed 374 to 225, with 102 abstentions, according to reports. While it was not the outright ban environmentalists had hoped for, it was a step in the right direction.

The dangers of Roundup’s co-formulants

In addition to the carcinogenicity of glyphosate, we’re now learning that Roundup’s “inert ingredients” (meaning they’re supposedly inactive), are potentially more harmful than glyphosate itself.

Robin Mesnage, a cellular and molecular toxicologist in London, successfully reverse-engineered some of the components in Roundup in order to evaluate their safety. Because Monsanto and other biotech companies consider co-formulants a trade secret, scientists were forced to recreate the chemicals so they could be studied.

Robin and his team found that five of the co-formulants interfere with “the function of both the mitochondria in human placental cells and aromatase, an enzyme that affects sexual development,” The Intercept revealed in a groundbreaking report.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is currently conducting a “registration review” of glyphosate to determine if the chemical is safe to use for another 15 years. For it to be approved, the chemical must be in compliance with the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act, which requires that under proper use the chemical “will not generally cause unreasonable adverse effects on the environment.”

Though the agency says its cancer assessment on glyphosate is not yet finalized, on Friday, the EPA published what appeared to be their conclusion, which stated that the weed killer is not carcinogenic to humans, contradicting earlier reports from the World Health Organization stating that it is.

In a peculiar move, the EPA quickly yanked the documents from the web, saying they were “inadvertently” published, according to Reuters. The documents, which were retrieved, show the agency based its assessment entirely on industry data, including slideshow presentations from none other than Monsanto.

Though disappointing, activists are hopeful the EPA will make true on its promises, including a pledge it made to have its data peer-reviewed before reaching a final decision regarding the carcinogenicity of glyphosate, Alexis Baden-Mayer, Political Director for the Organic Consumers Association, told Natural News.

However, individuals concerned with the health and environmental impacts of glyphosate don’t intend to wait for more bad news. Tomorrow, on May 4 at 11:30 a.m. EST, citizens, activists, and scientists will spring into action and rally outside the White House demanding the EPA revoke the license for glyphosate.

Following the rally, a large coalition of national organizers will march over to the EPA headquarters located at 1200 Pennsylvania Ave NW at 1:00 p.m. EST to deliver 400,000 petitions demanding the government immediately halt the use of glyphosate on American’s farmland, parks, and schools.

The event was organized by Moms Across America and Care2, and has received assistance from the Organic Consumers Association, Beyond Pesticides, Friends of the Earth, SumOfUs, CREDO Action, and Food Democracy Now.

The rally is scheduled just one week after the European Union voted to renew the license of glyphosate for another 10 years, in light of fierce opposition.

Science shows widespread glyphosate contamination

The EPA’s premature and unofficial ruling that glyphosate is not likely to be cancerous to humans has led event organizers “to believe the EPA will renew the license of glyphosate, an act which many say, due to health implications, America cannot afford,” according to the event’s press release.[PDF]

“The EPA is simply ignoring hundreds of scientific studies showing harm. The fact is that plenty of science shows that the contamination of glyphosate in our wine, beer, tap water, urine, breast milk, cotton products, cereal and breakfast foods is a major contributing factor to America’s skyrocketing illnesses,” said Zen Honeycutt, with Moms Against America.

“This widespread contamination of this probable carcinogen, neurotoxin and endocrine disruptor must stop. The EPA MUST revoke the license of glyphosate now and protect the people, not the profits of the chemical companies.

While you and I are obsessed with glyphosate, Monsanto is turning to other genetically-modified atrocities — like RNA pesticides.

This is the next chemical attack the company will likely wield just as it has before, by using crony capitalism, skewing scientific factssuing non-compliant organic farmers, and trying to monopolize food crops by buying up land and forcing ubiquitous trade deals that only well-appointed lobbyists in government capitals support.

Monsanto calls RNA Interference a ‘natural process’ in plants in the same manner they have vowed that glyphosate is ‘safe,’ while industry-discredited scientists have shown that glyphosate exposure, even in infinitesimal amounts, causes cancerous tumor growth. The company explains the process:

RNA interference (RNAi) is a natural process cells use to turn down, or suppress the activity of specific genes. This is done through the cell’s natural ability to review RNA instructions inside the cell and then “decide” whether to process the instructions or not. As a result, the process can turn down or stop production of a specific protein, much like a dimmer on a light switch. This cellular process was discovered in the 1990’s and additional research in the area led to Drs. Fire and Mello winning a Nobel Prize for their work in 2006. Their award-winning work, and that of countless other scientists, has opened many new areas of research in human, animal and plant health.”

Notice that nowhere in this explanation does Monsanto describe what this technology really does, which is silence genes. Of course this technology is meant to silence genes in bugs that eat crops, but there is no proof RNA pesticides won’t silence the genes of unintended recipients, like wildlife, and human beings.

In fact, University of Canterbury Professor Jack Heinemann released results from genetic research he conducted on Monsanto’s GM wheat, which showed with “no doubt” molecules created in the wheat, that are intended to silence genes to change its carbohydrate content, may match human genes and potentially silence them.

According to Heinemann’s analysis, dsRNA-mediated silencing is becoming the basis of novel traits in GM plants, including bio-pesticides. These RNA pesticides are altering nutritional characteristics, and they can lead to significant changes in the way glucose and carbohydrates are stored in the human body, causing potentially lethal outcomes.

So after Monsanto developed PCBs, DDT, Agent Orange, and Roundup (glyphosate), it now wants to silence our genes with RNA pesticides to help grow its $47 billion empire. Is there no end to Monsanto’s ravenous appetite for destruction?

Take the spotlight away from Deflategate and aim it at glyphosate, an active ingredient in Monsanto’s herbicide Roundup since the 1970s. Around for over 40 years, glyphosate has found its way into our drinking water like many other toxic byproducts from the creations of our esteemed chemists. I am not denigrating innovation, I am just venting my frustration over the paradoxical mess we, as a society, have gotten ourselves into. We want to make great discoveries, such as controlling the growth of our crops to feed the masses. But like mass production of clothes, quality can be compromised.

I started to write about glyphosate after reading an article by Dr. Mercola about GMO labeling across the U.S. The article reported that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization declared glyphosate a “probable carcinogen.” Intrigued, I went to IARC’s website to learn more about it and landed on its Home page. Because the organization’s specialty is cancer, there were various articles about the subject.

A press release dated 1/13/15 caught my eye. The lead-in read: “Most types of cancer are not due to ‘bad luck’—IARC responds to scientific article claiming that environmental and lifestyle factors account for less than one third of cancers.”

After reading the release, I was not surprised about IARC’s conclusion, which was “. . . a majority of the most common cancers occurring worldwide are strongly related to environmental and lifestyle exposures. In principle, therefore, these cancers are preventable; based on current knowledge, nearly half of all cancer cases worldwide can be prevented. This is supported in practice by rigorous scientific evidence showing decreases in cancer incidence after preventive interventions. . . .”

It’s no wonder that Monsanto is trying to fight “rumors” that its pesticide products are causing serious health damage to unborn children and to people of all ages. Glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup, has been named the most widely used herbicide in history.

A paper recently published in the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Sciences Europe states that 18.9 billion pounds (8.6 billion kilograms) of glyphosate have been used globally. The herbicide’s use has risen almost 15-fold since the introduction of so-called “Roundup Ready” genetically engineered crops in the 90’s.

Enough glyphosate was applied in 2014 to cover every harvested acre of cropland worldwide several times over, with estimates of its use coming in at (minimally) 0.53 kilogram/hectare. This makes glyphosate the most commonly used and widely sprayed herbicide in history.

A powerful new review on the toxicity of glyphosate signals a growing consensus among non industry sponsored scientists that the relatively unmonitored and unregulated exposure to this ubiquitous toxicant can no longer be promoted as a justifiable risk.

The newly released consensus statement published in the journal Environmental Health and titled, “Concerns over use of glyphosate-based herbicides and risks associated with exposures: a consensus statement,” identified the broad spectrum herbicide glyphosate (common trade name “Roundup”) as major threat to human and environmental health. Identified as having increased in usage 100-fold since the late 1970’s, the study predicts glyphosate usage will increase to even greater amounts due to,”widespread emergence of glyphosate-resistant weeds and new, pre-harvest, dessicant use patterns.” Oats, for example, are commonly sprayed with glyphosate as a pre-harvest dessicant, even though it is legal to label them “non-GMO,” as we recently reported on in connection with the product Cheerios.

The study also identified a key regulatory problem associated with increased glyphosate exposure: “To accommodate changes in GBH [glyphosate based herbicide] use patterns associated with genetically engineered, herbicide-tolerant crops, regulators have dramatically increased tolerance levels in maize, oilseed (soybeans and canola), and alfalfa crops and related livestock feeds.” In a previous report titled, “EPA to America People: ‘Let Them Eat Monsanto’s Roundup Ready Cake,” we discussed the EPA’s role in covering up the increasingly dire glyphosate accumulation in our food supply by arbitrarily increasing its permissible levels without regard to the obvious health risks. Studies have conclusively proven that the popular herbicide Roundup causes birth defects, and an increasingly robust body of data linking the toxic chemical to cancer is also emerging. One of the most disturbing findings of this research is that the chemical may be carcinogenic in doses up to 4,000 times lower than what people may be exposed to during normal use of the chemical.

These findings have serious implications for those living near agricultural fields or in other areas with Roundup spraying.

Roundup is the trade name of Monsanto’s blockbuster herbicide glyphosate. It is one of the most widely used pesticides in the world, in large part because Monsanto has engineered genetically modified (GM) varieties of alfalfa, canola, corn, cotton, soy and sugar beets to resist the chemical concoction. This has led to a surge in Roundup spraying on agricultural fields worldwide.

Cancer rates skyrocket in GMO-growing regions

Some of the earliest evidence of Roundup’s connection to cancer came from the “Soy Republic,” a region of several South American countries that now has 125 million acres devoted to GM soy production. Doctors in these regions have noticed such a sharp uptick in cancer cases since GMO cultivation took off that they have formed an organization, Doctors of Fumigated Towns, and held a conference in 2010. Studies have now confirmed what these doctors long suspected: Towns with more Roundup spraying have higher cancer rates.

“The change in how agriculture is produced has brought, frankly, a change in the profile of diseases,” said Argentinean pediatrician Medardo Avila Vazquez, who specializes in environmental health. “We’ve gone from a pretty healthy population to one with a high rate of cancer, birth defects and illnesses seldom seen before.”

Perhaps the most damning verdict for Monsanto came in April 2014, when the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) published a review of 25 years worth of research into pesticides and a type of cancer called and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The study found that organo-phosphorus herbicides, including Roundup, were associated with a higher cancer risk. A 2009 study in the United States also found a doubled risk of brain cancer in children whose parents were exposed to Roundup up to two years prior to the child’s birth.

Regular exposure causes DNA damage

Because correlational studies cannot prove causation, scientists have conducted numerous studies to see if Roundup does indeed produce the cellular and genetic changes that lead to cancer. The evidence is clear: It does.

Numerous studies have confirmed that Roundup causes DNA damage in a wide variety of animal species. Other studies have shown that human cells exposed to Roundup turn cancerous.

Study Shows Monsanto’s Bt Toxin Kills Human Embryo Cells

More evidence has surfaced showing that Monsanto’s Bt toxin, which the company claims doesn’t harm humans, is definitively poisoning the populace. New research out of Canada explains that Bt toxin not only accumulates in human tissue but also kills human embryo cells in pregnant women.

For their study, researchers from the University of Sherbrooke Hospital Centre in Quebec looked at pesticides associated with genetically modified (GM) foods, and particularly Bt toxin engineered into some varieties of GM corn and soy. They focused on how these poisons affect pregnant women and their unborn babies.

Based on an analysis of the blood profiles of 30 pregnant women and 39 non-pregnant women, the team determined that CryAb1, a type of Bt toxin, was present not only in pregnant women but also their fetuses. Additionally, Bt toxin was observed to actually kill human embryos in vivo, or inside the bodies of the women.

This deadly phenomenon is known as reproductive toxicology, and it’s something that Monsanto, when first petitioning the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval of Bt toxin, promised wasn’t possible. In other words, the company clearly lied to the U.S. government about the deadly effects of this poison, which an earlier study out of the same hospital found is present in virtually all pregnant women’s bodies.

“This is the first study to reveal the presence of circulating PAGMF [pesticides associated to genetically modified foods] in women with and without pregnancy, paving the way for a new field in reproductive toxicology including nutrition and utero-placental toxicities,” wrote the authors.

Bt toxin destroys human kidneys, causes cancer

What this means for the general population is that typical consumption of foods containing GMO derivatives from Bt crops could lead to an inability to have children. Rather than just kill insects as Monsanto claims, Bt toxin directly targets unborn human children as well, according to the study, which means GMO crops themselves are a human pesticide.

“Not only do these cry-toxins (Bt toxin) target the kidney cells of developing human fetuses, but when Cry1Ab and Cry1Ac are combined with Roundup, they can delay apoptosis of human cancer cells,” wrote Christina Sarich from TheRebel.org about the nephrotoxicity and carcinogenicity of Bt toxin.

“What’s worse, glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup, also causes necrosis — i.e. the death of human tissue, and this happens even when the substance is found in much smaller amounts than what is currently being used on our agricultural crops. The stuff is still carcinogenic in the parts per trillion range.”

Roundup makes Bt toxin even more harmful

So not only is Bt toxin highly damaging to humans at levels commonly seen in food, but so is Roundup, the “safe” herbicide applied to many GM crops. And when combined, these two poisons become synergistically more toxic than they are separately, a fact that was never even considered during their approval.

By lobbying regulatory agencies and governments, by resorting to lying and corruption, by financing fraudulent scientific studies, by pressuring independent scientists, and by manipulating the press and media.

Monsanto’s history reads like a text-book case of impunity, benefiting transnational corporations and their executives, whose activities contribute to climate and biosphere crises and threaten the safety of the planet.”

Monsanto CEO Hides Behind Same Old Lame Talking Points

CBS This Morning4 recently interviewed Monsanto CEO Hugh Grant about the lack of transparency when it comes to foods containing genetically engineered (GE) ingredients, and why the company spent $10 million to defeat GMO labeling in Colorado and Oregon alone.

Grant was noncommittal, clinging to vague and already well-refuted talking points, including the idea that GMO labeling will increase costs and cause more confusion than it resolves, were individual states permitted to enact their own labeling laws.

They didn’t have time to address why Monsanto uses paid shills to launch attacks against 14-year-old girls.

He also denied that Roundup, Monsanto’s top-selling herbicide, which all of their Roundup Ready seeds are engineered to withstand, is at all hazardous to health, saying he’s “very comfortable” with Roundup’s safety.

Those in agreement with that sentiment are getting fewer, however. In March 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), which is the research arm of the World Health Organization (WHO), determined glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, to be a “probable carcinogen” (Class 2A).

Since then, several lawsuits have been filed against Monsanto by agricultural workers claiming their cancers were caused by exposure to Roundup.

According to other recent research, glyphosate may also promote antibiotic resistance by disrupting gut bacteria and dysregulating manganese utilization; manganese accumulation in bile acids allows Salmonella to gain a stronghold there.

To say that we “require” tools like patented GE seeds and carcinogenic, soil-wrecking chemicals to feed the world in coming decades is beyond disingenuous!

Over a billion people consume aspartame in their foods and beverages across the world, believing it to be a safe ingredient, but what they probably don’t know is that aspartame currently accounts for over 75% of all side effects complaints received by the FDA’s Adverse Reaction Monitoring System [ARMS] for the past 4 years.

Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death. A few of the different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, birth defects, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

The FDA knows 92 potential side effects, which were submitted to them on April 20th 1995 by the Department of Health & Human Services, for aspartame.

At one point, Aspartame was even considered by the Department of Defense [DOD] as a potential biological-warfare neurotoxin.

Besides knowing this, Donald Rumsfeld pushed it out into the stores in over 5,000 at the time when he was CEO of Searly, which eventually was sold to the multi-national Monsanto.  The number of products in which Aspartame is included has increased to approximately 6000 since then.   As many of you may know, Monsanto is a completely other monster that is part of the global food-control scheme and was also named the worst company of 2011.

Aspartame or many products which contain it have been banned all over the world, especially where there is a national healthcare system in place.

Aspartame is best known by the brand names NutraSweet, Equal, Sweet One and Spoonful.  This toxic compound is also used in Extra Gum, Equal, NutraSweet, Diet Pepsi, SlimFast, Diet Coke, Orbit Gum, Juicy Fruit, Gavison, Splenda, as well as many other products.
Aspartame is asynthetic chemical combination which is comprised of approximately 50% phenylalanine, 40% aspartic acid, and 10% methanol. Aspartame is found in thousands of foods, drinks, candy, gum, vitamins, health supplements and even pharmaceuticals.

Each of the three ingredients in Aspartame poses its own dangers and each is well documented as causing a long list of side effects and dangerous health conditions. Watch for the ingredient Acesulfame Potassium, which is just another name for Aspartame.  Also keep in mind a cousin of Aspartame, which goes by the name of Neotame.

Phenylalanine: Even a single use of Aspartame raises the blood phenylalanine levels. High blood phenylalanine can be concentrated in parts of the brain and isespecially dangerous for infants and fetuses. Because it is metabolized much more efficiently by rodents than humans, testing and research on rats alone is not sufficient enough to denounce the dangers of Aspartame for human consumption. Excessive levels of phenylalanine in the brain cause serotonin levels to decrease, leading to emotional disorders like depression.

Aspartic Acid: Aspartic acid is considered anexcito-toxin, which means it over stimulates certain neurons in the body until they die. Much like nitrates and MSG, aspartic acid can cause amino acid imbalances in the body and result in the interruption of normal neurotransmitter metabolism of the brain.

Methanol becomes Formaldehyde [Embalming fluid]: The most prominent danger of Aspartame is that when ingested, the methanol [wood alcohol] is distributed throughout the body, including the brain, muscle, fat and nervous tissues, and is then metabolized to form formaldehyde, which enters cells and binds to proteins and genetic material [DNA]. Methanol is a dangerous neurotoxin and a known carcinogen, which causes retinal damage in the eye, interferes with DNA processes, and can cause birth defects.

According to the Conference of the American College of Physicians, ‘We are talking about a plague of neurological diseases caused by this deadly poison”. Dr. Roberts realized what was happening when ASPARTAME was first marketed. He said “his diabetic patients presented memory loss, confusion, and severe vision loss.” At the Conference of the American College of Physicians, doctors admitted that they did not know. They had wondered why seizures were rampant [the phenylalanine in ASPARTAME breaks down the seizure threshold and depletes serotonin, which causes manic depression, panic attacks, rage, and violence].

There is no way that Monsanto, who is also the creator of the highly toxic defoliant Agent Orange, which was used in Vietnam as a part of a herbicidal warfar program, does NOT know the side effects of Aspartame.  They must know the dangers of this toxic asynthetic chemical. 

Monsanto funds the American Diabetes Association, American Dietetic Association, and the Conference of the American College of Physicians. The New York Times, on November 15, 1996, ran an article on how the American Dietetic Association takes money from the food industry to endorse their products. Therefore, they can not criticize any additives or tell about their link to Monsanto.

Dr. Roberts says “consuming Aspartame at the time of conception can cause birth defects.” The phenylalanine concentrates in the placenta, causes mental retardation, according to Dr. Louis Elsas, Pediatrician Professor of Genetics, at Emory University in his testimony before Congress.

So what are possible alternatives?

Stevia is an herb that has been used as a sweetener in South America for hundreds of years. It is calorie–free, and the powdered concentrate is 300 times sweeter than sugar. It is widely used all over the world. In Japan, for example, it claims 41% of the sweetener market, including sugar, and was used in Japanese Diet Coke until the company replaced it with aspartame to “standardize” worldwide.

Another possibility is Palm Sugar. Palm sugar is a nutrient-rich, low-glycemic crystalline sweetener that looks, tastes, dissolves and melts almost exactly like sugar, but it’s completely natural and unrefined. It’s acquired from the flowers growing high on coconut trees, which are opened to collect their liquid flower nectar. This nectar is then air-dried to form a crystalline sugar that’s naturally brown in color and naturally rich in a number of key vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, including potassium, zinc, iron, and vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B6.

It is never refined or bleached like white sugar.  So the nutrients it was made with are still there. That’s rare for sweeteners, most of which are highly refined. Even stevia is highly refined in its white powder form [real stevia is a green herb].

Lastly there is Xylitol, which has been shown to have many health benefits, yet few know of its healing power to prevent ear infections in children. It inhibits bacterial growth thus helping to avoid the use of dangerous antibiotics.

Xylitol is a natural low-calorie, low-glycemic sugar substitute produced from the fibers of fruits, vegetables, and trees such as plums, raspberries, corn, and birch. Xylitol is as sweet as sugar and can be used safely by diabetics. As xylitol is a mild sugar alcohol, excessive consumption over 30 grams per day can cause a temporary laxative effect that disappears with continued use as the body adapts. It is also important to find a source of xylitol that is GMO free if made from corn.

Keep in mind, the best way to avoid illnesses is by avoiding the products that cause them.  After many years of researching Aspartame, I have come to realize this is one of the main engines of disease.

The facts speak for themselves.  Ample evidence is abound for those that care to look.

A myriad of reasons for rampant diseases can be postulated, and I have no doubt that at the center Aspartame will lie, as the delectable & stealthy toxin, right in the center assisting Big Pharma with profits carved right from this Devil’s Poison.

One of the main ways one can change heatlh is by changing detrimental habits.  It might not be easy, but it can be done.  I have seen many do it and I have done it myself.
