Drastic 300% rise in babies born already addicted to heroin, opioids, painkillers

Opioids

The number of babies who are born addicted to opioids has tripled in just 15 years in our country. It’s a shocking statistic that underscores just how far opioid addiction reaches. In 1999, 1.5 babies in every 1,000 births were born addicted to opioids and placed into a withdrawal program immediately. A new CDC report shows that the number had risen dramatically to 6 babies per 1,000 births by 2013.

Some areas of the country have been particularly hard hit. In West Virginia, for example, just 0.5 cases of opiate addiction were noted per 1,000 births in 1999. In 2013, however, the number had skyrocketed to 33.4. Maine and Vermont have also recorded similarly disturbing rises.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that 78 Americans die each day from an opioid overdose, and this is being largely attributed to the rising numbers of people who take prescription painkillers.

Many cases going unreported

A law passed in 2003 requiring hospitals and social services to report and help drug-dependent newborns and their families has been largely ignored, with just nine states routinely following it. This means that the majority of the children who were born to addicted mothers were not being reported, and it is believed that medical workers were reluctant to involve child protective services.

Sadly, more than 110 babies have died under preventable circumstances since the year 2010, after being sent home with families who were not prepared to take care of them. This estimate is believed to be on the low end.

A new law put in place last month, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, assures a non-punitive approach that will allow newborns to remain with their parents while they receive extra help.

Opioid use rampant in America

Last year, a team of researchers from Vanderbilt University Medical Center discovered that some pregnant women who took opioid painkillers were prescribed the medication for no clear reason, placing their babies at unnecessary risk. Withdrawal symptoms experienced by these drug-dependent babies include fever, low weight, sweating, vomiting and excessive crying.

Their study of more than 112,000 pregnant women on Medicaid found that 28 percent had been prescribed at least one opioid painkiller at some point in their pregnancy.

They also found that the infant’s risk was influenced by factors such as the type of prescription opioid, the length of use, the number of cigarettes the mother smoked, and if they took SSRI antidepressants at the same time.

The lead researcher, Dr. Stephen W. Patrick, said that the low birth weight noted in opioid-addicted babies posed even more long-term health risks than being born with neonatal abstinence syndrome.

Americans consume around 81 percent of the world’s supply of oxycodone, and it’s estimated that as many as four out of every five heroin users started out by taking opioid painkillers. The CDC recently stepped in and released 12 guidelines to advise doctors on responsible opioid prescription practices. CDC Director Thomas Frieden said at the time: “We know of no other medication routinely used for a nonfatal condition that kills patients so frequently.”

Drug manufacturers worked hard to try to prevent the CDC from releasing the new guidelines, but they only managed to delay them. There is a lot of money at stake here, with a Stanford University report showing that the sales of prescription opioids have climbed by more than 300 percent since 1999 – the same rise as that noted in the number of babies born addicted to these drugs.

Pregnant women who are dealing with pain should do everything in their power to avoid taking opioid painkillers. If your doctor prescribes this drug to you and tries to minimize the risks, be firm and ask if there are any non-opioid alternatives you can take. You can also try to manage some types of pain using natural methods such as meditation and yoga. Besides avoiding dangerous medications, pregnant women should also eat a healthy diet and ensure that their home has clean air to help give their baby a healthy start to life.

Baby Gives Back: The Fetus Is Capable Of Saving Mom’s Life

Baby Gives Back: The Fetus Is Capable of Saving Mom's Life

It has been known for some time that during pregnancy, the placenta enables a two-way trafficking of immune cells between mother and fetus. Some of the exchanged cells are capable of establishing long-lasting cell lines that persist for at least half a century after birth and are immunologically active.

Known as microchimerism, two genetically distinct and separately derived populations of cells are present in the same individual or organ. While it can occur artificially, as with recipients of blood transfusions or bone marrow transplants, it occurs naturally during most pregnancies. For instance, approximately 50-75% of women after giving birth carry fetal immune cells,[1] and about half as many offspring carry maternal immune cells.

The bidirectional fetomaternal trafficking of cells through the placenta is known as “fetal microchimerism” when moving in the fetal -> maternal direction, and “maternal microchimerism” when moving in the maternal -> fetal direction.

Baby Gives Back: The Fetus Is Capable of Saving Mom's Life

While much of the focus on this phenomenon in the past 15 years has been on the possible pathological role that these fetal cells play in contributing to autoimmune diseases in the mother, i.e. the “bad microchimerism” proposed by Nelson JL in 1996,[2] a more positive perspective is beginning to emerge, also known as the “good microchimerism” hypothesis, which “…suggests that persistent fetal cells, instead of inducing a maternal immune response, provide a rejuvenating source of fetal progenitor cells that may have the capacity to participate in maternal tissue repair processes.”[3]

Published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2004 and titled “Transfer of fetal cells with multilineage potential to maternal tissue,” researchers discussed the role that fetal microchimerism may play in responding to maternal injury by developing multilineage capacity in maternal organs.  They found evidence that male fetal microchimeric cells had differentiated into maternal epithelial tissues (thyroid, cervix, intestine and gallbladder,” indicating their stem-cell like qualities and the possibility that they were contributing to repair and/or regeneration of those injured maternal tissues.[4]

More recently (2012), the journal Circulation Research published a remarkable article titled “Fetal cells traffic to injured maternal myocardium and undergo cardiac differentiation,” which investigated the possible explanatory role that fetal microchimerism has in the clinical observation of the high rate of recovery from heart failure in peripartum (occurring during the last month of gestation or the first few months after delivery) cardiomyopathy patients.[5]  Their stated objective was to “…determine whether fetal cells can migrate to the maternal heart and differentiate to cardiac cells.”  The researchers reported the following results:

“We report that fetal cells selectively home to injured maternal hearts and undergo differentiation into diverse cardiac lineages. Using enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP)-tagged fetuses, we demonstrate engraftment of multipotent fetal cells in injury zones of maternal hearts. In vivo, eGFP+ fetal cells form endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and cardiomyocytes.”

This astounding discovery indicates that fetal stem cells are capable of differentiating into a variety of heart cell types, including “beating cardiomyocytes,” and which may heal the mother’s physical heart.

Baby Saves Mom's Life

It appears that Nature made it possible for the unborn offspring of mammals to save their mother’s lives by contributing stem cells which are capable of grafting into tissues, including bone marrow, potentially providing a lifelong source of new healthy cells to replace damaged or dysfunctional ones.

In a future article we will be investigating the role of placental stem cells in explaining the phenomenon of placentaphagy, i.e. the near universal practice of mammals consuming the placenta of their young.

Study: Glyphosate proves incredibly hazardous to women, affecting fertility while promoting uterine cancer

Glyphosate

July 21, 2016

The current issue of the Toxicology journal, details the first study in glyphosate’s more than 40 years on the market, to study its effects on uterine development. In the study, a group of researchers injected newborn rats with a commercial dose of glyphosate-based herbicide (GBH), while a control group was given a saline solution.

The researchers found that the rats who were exposed to GBH showed signs of morphological changes in their uteri from exposure as early as a week after being born. The GBH group also showed altered expression of the proteins responsible for uterine organo-genetic differentiation. This is very significant, and can mean changes in the form of embryos, such as birth deformities or being born with three ears, for example. It was also shown to affect their organs.

The findings led the researchers to conclude that glyphosate exposure affects female fertility, and could even promote the development of uterine cancer. In addition, glyphosate herbicides can disrupt the endocrine function of prepubescent rats, which indicates that the chemicals are likely endocrine disruptors.

‘Safe’ dose responsible for uterine effects

The dose of glyphosate that was found to disrupt the rats’ uterine development was based on the reference dose of the substance that regulators have claimed is safe for daily consumption over the course of one’s lifetime: 2 mg per kg of body weight each day.

This study’s findings are hardly surprising to those who are familiar with the well-documented ill effects of glyphosate, but it is notable that it was carried out and published in the first place. After all, GMO chemical firms like Monsanto do their best to make sure that unbiased scientists are not able to study the dangers of their products and release their findings.

Of course, no one should be surprised when the agrochemical lobby tries to discount these findings and/or discredit the researchers. After all, that has been their modus operandi for a number of years, and they have been quite successful in getting their product to remain on the market despite its very real dangers and being labeled by the World Health Organization as a “probable carcinogen.”

The findings are significant because glyphosate-based herbicides such as Roundup are the most widely used in the world, with more than four fifths of all edible agricultural GMOs being sprayed with the substance.

While glyphosate is indeed very dangerous on its own, it is typically combined with adjuvants that have been found to be 1,000 times more toxic than glyphosate alone. Monsanto and other firms refuse to disclose the identities of the adjuvants that they use, claiming patent proprietary rights, while risking human health and even life in pursuit of the almighty dollar.

Glyphosate already known to cause birth defects

A report released by Earth Open Source in 2011, revealed that regulators have known that Roundup causes birth defects since 1980. In addition, it is common knowledge that high rates of miscarriage have been noted in women who live in areas of Argentina where Roundup Ready soy is sprayed with glyphosate.

None of us want to be exposed to harmful toxins like glyphosate, but the truth is that we are seemingly bombarded with them from every angle in modern life. One way you can neutralize the free radicals that may damage DNA is by taking astaxanthin, one of the most important nutrients there is for human health.

It can help protect against environmental stresses, UV radiation and oxidation. It comes from algae, and is all-natural. In fact, astaxanthin is what gives salmon its pink color as well as its incredible energy for swimming against strong currents. With so many dangerous substances in our environment, we need all the strength we can get to remain healthy and have a fighting chance for lifelong health.

Glyphosate Link To Brain Damaged Babies In Brazil? New Groundbreaking Report

Glyphosate
Via: TalesFromTheLouBlog

July 18, 2016

Much hype has been generated linking the Zika virus carried by mosquitoes to an outbreak of microcephaly, a form of brain damage, in Brazil. Radical solutions have been proposed such as releasing genetically engineered mosquitoes to quell the threat and reduce mosquito populations. But could all of this simply be a misdirection so that the pesticide industry can continue to get away with selling highly dangerous pesticides such as Glyphosate with no repercussions for the consequences as well as an excuse to further vaccine industry profits and extend the genetic engineering of all life forms as a “cure” for what ails us?

In a groundbreaking new paper put out by Anthony Samsel and Stephanie Seneff, Glyphosate is linked to exactly what the Zika virus has been targeted for, although relatively few cases of microcephaly have actually been linked to the virus.

NEURAL TUBE DEFECTS AND AUTISM

Glyphosate can penetrate past the placenta. Alarming increases in birth defects such as microcephaly, anencephaly, cleft palates and other facial defects have been found in regions of South America and Paraguay where glyphosate is used extensively on core crops. The US Centers for Disease Control have reported on an excessive number of anencephaly births in Yakima (Washington), at four times the national average rate. This increase coincided with a large increase in the use of glyphosate to control waterway weeds. A recent study by Roy et al. on zebrafish embryos revealed that glyphosate causes microcephaly in zebrafish, and that the forebrain and midbrain are affected (but the hindbrain was spared). A US-based study found that the cerebellum is frequently disproportionately large in human microcephaly, particularly in the more severe cases, reflecting a larger effect on the forebrain compared to the hindbrain.

Glyphosate_pathways to modern diseases V- Amino acid analogue of glycine in diverse proteins_FNL_Published

Farm Wars addressed the anencephaly and Glyphosate usage connection in an article titled “Glyphosate, Brain Damaged Babies, and Yakima Valley – A River Runs Through It:”

Three Washington counties – Yakima, Benton, and Franklin – experienced an unusually high number of birth defects at around the same time as Glyphosate was being used extensively for several years to eradicate noxious weeds on land and in the water. That birth defect is called anencephaly.

And more recently, microcephaly, another result of Glyphosate usage, has arisen in Brazil. In an article titled “Why Brazil has a big appetite for risky pesticides,“ Reuters reports that:

LIMOEIRO DO NORTE, Brazil – The farmers of Brazil have become the world’s top exporters of sugar, orange juice, coffee, beef, poultry and soybeans. They’ve also earned a more dubious distinction: In 2012, Brazil passed the United States as the largest buyer of pesticides.

Brazil is “the largest country in South America, encompassing around half of the continent’s land area and population.” Coincidence that microcephaly, caused by Glyphosate, the most used pesticide in the world, just happens to be on the rise in the largest country in South America, which has bypassed the U.S. as the largest buyer of pesticides?

Genetically engineered herbicide-tolerant crops now account for about 56 % of global glyphosate use. In the U.S., no pesticide has come remotely close to such intensive and widespread use. This is likely the case globally, but published global pesticide use data are sparse. Glyphosate will likely remain the most widely applied pesticide worldwide for years to come, and interest will grow in quantifying ecological and human health impacts. Accurate, accessible time-series data on glyphosate use will accelerate research progress

https://enveurope.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s12302-016-0070-0

Misdirection, outright falsification, scientific fraud, and government collusion all come to mind when we look at the actual facts surrounding the massive fraud that has been perpetrated on the world’s population by the pesticide industry. Look! It’s a mosquito! It carries a virus! That’s why babies have birth defects! We must create a vaccine to cure this horrible plague! Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the real culprits continue churning out the stuff that is really causing the problem while getting rich off of the carcasses of their victims.

Read the full report by Anthony Samsel and Stephanie Seneff and discover exactly what other life-altering, debilitating diseases that usage of the world’s most popular pesticide, Glyphosate, is correlated with including, but not limited to:

Obesity, diabetes, end stage renal disease, renal failure, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, intestinal infection, inflammatory bowel disease, stroke, leukemia, thyroid cancer, liver cancer, bladder cancer, pancreatic cancer and kidney cancer… a large number of disorders of the newborn that are increasing in step with glyphosate usage… include congenital heart disease, skin disorders, genitourinary disorders, blood disorders, metabolic disorders and lung conditions.

Antidepressants Linked To Neurological Damage In Newborns, Study Finds

[Editor’s Note]

There are numerous noxious effects from psych drugs.  This is a problem plaguing tens of millions of Americans [estimated 30 million or so] and is not as reported as it should be.  For more information regarding this the countless issues with antidepressants please read:

Antidepressants

July 15, 2016

Although pregnancy is viewed by most as a time to joyously anticipate the welcoming of a new life into the world, a rising number of new moms or moms-to-be struggle with symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Depression during pregnancy is not to be taken lightly. It is a severe medical condition that poses a significant risk for mother and baby. Currently, medical guidelines suggest non-pharmacological interventions, such as psychotherapy, as a first-line treatment. However, oftentimes patients are prescribed antidepressants instead.

Multiple studies have linked antidepressant use during pregnancy to a number of side-effects, including an increased risk of preterm birth, low birth weight, infant convulsions, autism, cardiovascular defects, excessive brain fluid at birth, smaller head size, and other congenital and developmental defects, as noted by Mad In America.

SRI antidepressants change electrical activity in the brain

It is estimated that somewhere between 6 and 15 percent of all women use an antidepressant during their pregnancy, with serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SRIs) being the most commonly prescribed.

While these drugs are considered safe to use during pregnancy by the medical world, scientific papers are showing an entirely different story.

A new, groundbreaking study from researchers associated with the BABA center at the University of Helsinki’s Children’s Hospital in Finland, has for the first time in history recorded the effects of SRI exposure on the electrical activity of newborns’ brains.

The study, published in the journal Cerebral Cortex, involved 22 mothers using SRI drugs and 62 controls without medication, and found a link between fetal SRI drug exposure and less organized communication between the baby’s brain hemispheres, as well as weaker synchronization between cortical rhythms.

What’s more, the negative effects seem to outlast the known withdrawal period that is commonly seen in newborns exposed to SRIs in the womb.

“We found many changes in the brain activity of SRI-exposed newborns,” says Professor Sampsa Vanhatalo, head of the BABA center at the Helsinki University Children’s Hospital. “Since the changes did not correlate with the mother’s psychiatric symptoms, we have assumed that they resulted as a side effect of maternal drug treatment.”

“This is the first study to show that prenatal SRI exposure in humans can affect the newborn cortical function beyond the acute withdrawal period,” the team concludes. “Our detailed quantitative, computational EEG analyses indicated SRI-related effects in both focal and global brain activity.”

Need for effective alternative treatments

Despite the current guidelines that recommend non-pharmacological therapies, and the living proof of the dangerous effects of antidepressants on a child’s developing brain, antidepressants are still the preferred treatment. And not only for pregnant women.

According to the IMS Health Vector One National database, more than two million developing U.S. children aged between 0 and 17 were prescribed antidepressants in 2013. Of these children, 26,406 were less than a year old.

“The current guidelines do include non-pharmacological therapies as the first-line treatment,” said Outi Mantere from McGill University, Canada. “If the mother using an SRI plans a pregnancy, it would be advisable to consider a close follow-up or a therapeutic intervention without SRI medication. Recent experience with group therapy has shown promise in treating depression or anxiety during pregnancy, with effects that extend to the wellbeing of both mother and baby.”

“We hope that our study will facilitate the current international discussion and search for effective alternatives in the treatment of depression and anxiety during pregnancy,” adds Professor Vanhatalo, as reported by EurekAlert.

Given the proof of developmental defects, as well as the self-harm and violent side effects associated with antidepressant use both during pregnancy and later in the child’s life, one may ask why these drugs are still prescribed to pregnant women and children alike.

“The question, of course, is no longer whether antidepressants are harmful but, rather, how much more damning research will be necessary before regulators take action to remove them from the market,” said Kelly Patricia O’Meara, writing for the CCHR International.

Medical Insanity? – Big Pharma Developing Baby Vaccines For Pregnant Women

Pregnancy
Source: NaturalNews.com
David Gutierrez
July 13, 2016

Vaccine industries have their sights set on a new market that they hope will someday be as massive as that created by the just-shy-of-obligatory childhood vaccine schedule: pregnant women.

The industry is working with the FDA to create new rules to test and develop vaccines designed to be given to pregnant women, in order to pass antibodies on to their unborn infants. The fact that this protection would only be short-term is not viewed as a problem.

Indeed, the industry is elated at the possibility to start vaccinating – via their mothers – babies too young to receive traditional vaccines.

Industry senses new opportunity

The concept of maternal vaccination targeting the infant immune system is not a new one. As far back as the 1960s, researchers were working on such a vaccine against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) – a common and mostly harmless infection that nearly everyone gets by age 2, and that is usually only dangerous for premature infants or babies with other health problems. Companies had soured on the idea of developing an RSV vaccine for newborns after the original RSV vaccine was actually found to increase children’s vulnerability to the disease, and caused two deaths.

But companies also worried that vaccinating pregnant women would not go over well with the public.

“The companies had some concerns about the use of maternal vaccines in a litigious society,” said immunization researcher Ruth Karron of Johns Hopkins University.

In recent years, however, pregnant women seem to have become more accepting of getting vaccines.

“We really had a sea change in the U.S. in terms of pregnant women getting the flu vaccine,” said Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The industry traces the start of this trend to the 2009 swine flu pandemic, and to later vaccination campaigns during pertussis (whooping cough) outbreaks.

In spite of CDC recommendations, most vaccines – including flu and Tdap vaccines – have not been proven safe for pregnant women. Just take a look at the FDA package inserts.

FDA colluding with shady research

The industry is looking to change that, by lobbying the FDA for a change in regulations that have made it difficult to test drugs on pregnant women.

“We are open to discussing alternative trial designs and alternative endpoints,” said Marion Gruber, director of the FDA’s Office of Vaccines Research and Review.

Now major vaccine companies, including GlaxoSmithKline, Novavax and Pfizer are working on various maternal vaccines, including for RSV and for Group B Strep (GBS). They hope that these vaccines will someday be administered routinely during pregnancy.

Research for a GBS vaccine has posed problems, since pregnant women in the United States are regularly given antibiotics if they test positive for GBS – even though research has shown that this practice contributes to antibiotic resistance, may harm children’s developing microbiomes, and provides little or no health benefit to the babies it is meant to help. This means that there isn’t much of a population to test a GBS vaccine on.

So, GlaxoSmithKline is instead carrying out trials on women in sub-Saharan Africa. The FDA has promised to accept the results, even though the followup methodology has been blasted as flawed.

“Many of [these women] don’t deliver in a hospital,” said Laura Riley, vice chair of obstetrics at Massachusetts General Hospital. “You can’t just go vaccinating people and not know the outcome.”

While pregnant women have a strong and understandable desire to protect their infants, the evidence still shows that the single best way to protect a child from disease is to breastfeed (or to feed pumped breast milk out of a bottle). Breast milk contains antibodies, immune factors, enzymes and white blood cells that help a child fight off infection. Breastfeeding is even linked to lower lifetime rates of non-infectious diseases, including leukemia and diabetes.

Of course, a mother should be sure to keep her own immune system in top shape to provide maximum protection through her milk. One way to support whole-body health is by consuming superfoods such as spirulina.
