Aspartame – sold under the brand names NutraSweet, Sugar Twin and Equal – is one of the most popular artificial sweeteners available on the market. It is used as a low-calorie sugar substitute in more than 6,000 processed products worldwide, especially in diet or sugar-free foods and beverages.

While it remains the most used artificial sweetener, it has also faced controversy in recent years. As more and more research links aspartame to severe health effects, increasing numbers of people are becoming aware of this hidden poison and are trying to avoid it at all costs. That’s why Pepsi proactively removed it from their diet soda last year.

Hidden poison

Complaints of various health issues have been filed since aspartame first appeared on the market in the 1980s. As reported by The Nutritional Source, aspartame is one of the most exhaustively studied chemicals in the human food supply, with more than 200 studies completed.

Dr. Betty Martini, the founder of the worldwide volunteer force Mission Possible World Health International, which is committed to removing aspartame from our food, notes that aspartame has brought more complaints to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) than any other additive; it is responsible for 75 percent of such complaints.

Over the years, more than 90 side effects – including vision loss, seizures, brain tumors, cancer and mild rashes – have been associated with regular consumption of aspartame. Furthermore, it can mimic the symptoms of diseases such as fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, lupus, ADD, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, chronic fatigue and depression.

When aspartame is processed by the body it breaks down into phenylalanine (50 percent), aspartic acid (40 percent) and methanol (or wood alcohol, 10 percent).

Aspartame can make you blind

We have all heard the stories about alcoholics ending up blind or dead after drinking methanol during Prohibition. Aspartame consists of 10 percent methanol which our body further breaks down into formaldehyde and formic acid. These compounds accumulate in the retina of the eye and destroy the optic nerve, causing vision loss and blindness.

Furthermore, methanol poisoning may cause central nervous system depression, and can lead to metabolic acidosis and coma.

As reported by Dr. Martini, in 1986 the Community Nutrition Institute petitioned the FDA to ban aspartame because so many people had gone blind and had seizures. Despite the apparent link, the FDA, backed up by the drug and chemical industry, refused to take aspartame out of production.

It messes with your brain

Excessive amounts of phenylalanine block the transport of essential amino acids to the brain, which contributes to reduced levels of dopamine and serotonin. While our brains need this amino acid, too much of it has been linked to emotional and behavioral disorders and brain damage.

Furthermore, too much aspartic acid, another amino acid present in aspartame, can cause over-stimulation and death of brain cells. It leaks too much calcium into the cells and triggers excessive amounts of free radicals, which may damage and kill neurons.

G.D. Searle, the company behind the discovery of aspartame, was warned as early as 1971 that excess amounts of aspartic acid caused holes in the brain of mice and posed a serious threat to human health, yet nobody found it necessary to remove aspartame from the shelves.

Induces brain tumors

Before its approval, aspartame had been rejected multiple times over fears of brain tumors and cancer, the Huffington Post reported. In 1996, Dr. John Olney, who founded the field of neuroscience called excitotoxicity, and attorney James Turner, attempted to stop the approval of aspartame.

Even the FDA’s own toxicologist, Dr. Adrian Gross, told Congress that aspartame could cause brain tumors and brain cancer, and that approving it would violate the Delaney Amendment, which forbids putting anything in food known to cause cancer.

Sadly enough, Donald Rumsfeld – who was CEO of G.D. Searle and part of Reagan’s transition team – and Monsanto joined forces. In 1985, Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle, the company that held the patent to aspartame. They managed to pull a few strings and played a substantial role in the approval of aspartame by the FDA.

Aspartame is a substance that has been relentlessly scrutinized by the natural health community, and yet also receives an astonishing amount of praise from many mainstream medical practitioners. It’s heralded as a safe alternative to sugar – and some big businesses have even tried to pretend that their aspartame-loaded diet beverages could even be better than water. Sugar-free sweets, beverages and baked goods make it an easy concept for the majority to hold on to; it allows them to have what they want, guilt-free.

Unfortunately, the history of how aspartame came to be a societal mainstay is not a sweet one. Before becoming legal, aspartame was banned twice by the FDA. According to The Daily Health Post, in 1977, aspartame triggered the first criminal investigation of a manufacturer to ever be launched by the agency. The FDA went on to ban aspartame in 1980, after having three separate independent scientists study the sweetener.

Why? Because they found that there was a strong risk for aspartame to cause brain tumors. And of course, aspartame consumption is linked to a whole host of other health issues. According to New Zealand’s Safe Food Campaign, aspartame is linked to more health problems than MSG – a substance that is widely regarded as unhealthy and toxic.

Emails belonging to John Podesta that were released by WikiLeaks, didn’t just provide a broader view of establishment corruption; they also uncovered concerns about NutraSweet, which is primarily comprised of aspartame. A person identified as Wendy Abrams forwarded an email chain about NutraSweet to Podesta in 2015. Abrams had been emailing a man identified as Don Kennedy, and expressed her concern about the addition of aspartame to chocolate milk used in school lunches. Chocolate milk is consumed at a ratio of 4 to 1, compared to plain white milk. Abrams writes, “The current proposal from the Dairy lobby is to put NutraSweet in the chocolate milk we serve to school children.” She also expresses her belief that this effort needs to be brought to a grinding halt.

In another email with Kennedy, Abrams writes about her own negative experiences with aspartame. She said that in college, she drank so many beverages sweetened with NutraSweet that she developed exercise-induced asthma and headaches. Abrams also made note of concerning information she had acquired.

“I also have a friend who worked for the researchers at University of Chicago (which has a top rated neurology dept) and the doctors there said when they gave nutrasweet to lab mice, it literally blew holes in their brains. They said they will tell a pregnant woman to drink any amount of alcohol before touching a sip of nutrasweet, it is that bad.

Kennedy responds by noting that he too has had great concerns over artificial sweeteners, and by divulging some concerning details about how aspartame finally came to be legalized. He explains that the day after Ronald Reagan’s inauguration, January 21, 1981, Searle – the original developer of aspartame – applied to the FDA for approval to use aspartame in food sweetener for a second time. Arthur Hayes Hull, Jr., Reagan’s newly appointed FDA commissioner, proceeded to appoint a 5-person scientific commission to review the board of inquiry’s decision.

When it became clear that the panel was going to uphold the ban with a 3–2 decision, Hull placed a sixth member on the commission so the vote would become deadlocked. Then Hull personally broke the tie in aspartame’s favor. Kennedy writes, “Hull later left the FDA under allegations of impropriety, served briefly as Provost at New York Medical College, and then took a position with Burston-Marsteller, the chief public relations firm for both Monsanto and GD Searle. Since that time he has never spoken publicly about aspartame.”

Does that seem a little suspicious to you? What is perhaps more upsetting is that people are aware this substance was approved under false pretenses, and yet no one has done anything to end its reign in American food.

It’s also worth noting that Monsanto acquired the patent on aspartame during the mid-80s. Perhaps that has something to do with it?

Eat To Beat Disease – Food’s Medicinal Qualities by Catherine J. Frompovich is a phenomenal foray into the alternative side of health.  Specifically, the alternative side to medicinal properties of foods.

Although that statement might seem rather foreign to those who follow only mainstream health, in fact it’s not.  According to a recent article on NaturalNews, as much as 80% of the known world still uses ancient medicines made from Plants & Botanicals.  Sure, this book deals with food, but both this book and the article deal with natural medicine that the mainstream establishment doesn’t even acknowledge most of the time, if at all.

Eat To Beat Disease is a significant book that features an extensive and in-depth look into the pros and cons of many foods people have in their daily diets.

Speaking of toxins, Frompovich gets to the heart of the matter as she states:

“…there are literally thousands of toxic chemicals that legally can be – and are – placed into the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe.  Furthermore, even the U.S. Food and Drug Administration doesn’t know what some of those chemicals are thanks to the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976 loopholes!”[1][xxvi]

Such is the nature of the beast we as a society face.

In fact, Frompovich goes out of her way to show a rather intriguing, if troubling timeline of the extensive poisoning that our supply has been under for nigh 150 years [if not longer].  This is helpful because it speaks at length of the issue of our deteriorating soil and the fact that vitamins and minerals are being depleted from the soul due to the events discussed and more.

Other issues discussed by Frompovich included those with prescription drugs, the rampant rise in disease, health issues that are trending, as well as issues with intestines and bowel movements.   The author touches upon these rather saliently showing why each is vital to know about.

Probiotics/Prebiotics are also given a cursory glance, so are artificial sweeteners and their ramifications, as well as issues that revolve around sugar, which is a rather underreported topic by the mainstream establishment.   It’s quite unfortunate, because sugar is one of the biggest fuels in cancer, and most people do not know this.

In any case, Frompovich also covers foods that can help reduce pain, which was rather useful.  As someone who suffered heavily from inflammation for nigh two decades due to intestinal conditions but overcame it with diet and lifestyle changes, dealing with pain in a natural way is something greatly appreciated.

A short section, but jam-packed with info in the book is called “Which Foods Help The Body Most In Managing Certain Diseases”.  This section touches upon some of the foods that are helpful in combating issues with blood pressure, cancer, cholesterol, diabetes, heart, the immune system, and stroke.

Other health issues that Frompovich gives a fair nod to are Gallbladder [Disease & Stones], Hypothyroidism, Glaucoma & Obesity & Weight Loss.

Additionally, the book includes a chapter that touches upon HPV Vaccine Reactions and what individuals can do when implementing proper nutrition.  This might be highly helpful for individuals that have dealt with this.

Thereafter, the author covers the importance of B-Complex Vitamin, benefits of fermented foods, and also problems with genetically modified foods which are rampant these days.

Featured also in the book are countless resources that people can use to learn more information about these subjects.  This was also highly valuable given the importance of the subject.

Besides all of this, the author covers so much more.  In all fairness, a few sections of the book are not super in-depth, BUT, this is because the author is taking a broad brush approach to cover as much as possible within the arena of nutritional health.  The information provided does give enough of a launching pad for individuals to begin taking charge of their health, which is one of the premises of this book.  That fact does in no way detract from the book, it’s just something to keep note of.

One more important point.  The author – thankfully! – footnoted the book extensively, which is how ALL books should be done, at the bottom of each page, like it used to be done in olden times.

Unfortunately, newer footnoting techniques have changed extensively from how books were written centuries ago.  This in a way serves as de facto censorship of data and prevents people from accessing information by either making it harder to find, or simply not even having it in many cases.  The fact that many ebooks, if not most don’t even have footnotes speaks to this VERY issue, which is vital importance, especially for those who value knowledge and research.

Apologies for the tangent, it’s just that as a researcher its highly valuable when people footnote their sources within their book, or articles.

Eat To Beat Disease is a veritable template for the many ways individuals can employ nutrition to conquer disease.  It’s the type of book that should be discussed at length in society, and by the mainstream press, but will not any coverage due to the ramifications and the profits it would ‘steal’ from Big Pharma/Big Medica.  That fact alone should make proactive and mindful individuals weary since optimal health methods should be something to strive for, or at least discuss, and not something to overlook if not downright suppress, which is what happens more often than not.

This blacklisting is best exemplified by what took place to Dr. Brogan in her landmark book A Mind Of Your Own – The Truth About Depression.

When one keeps in mind the above constellation of facts and more, this book is invaluable and should become part of your library.

Some people have severe allergies to nuts, dairy, gluten, MSG or aspartame – and the list goes on. Other people just want to avoid processed and synthetic ingredients that damage health, deplete energy, or simply cause headaches and stomach aches. Some folks just don’t want to get fat so they avoid sugar, saturated fats, artificial sweeteners and hydrogenated oils. But what if you found out that most depression and anxiety is caused by toxins in food, water and medications?

Wow! What if you found out that most cases of autism, Asperger’s syndrome, dementia and cancer all come from consuming pesticides and injecting mercury and aluminum into muscle tissue, over and over again?

As reported by The Telegraph, eating curry at least once a week may help you to prevent dementia, according to new research published in the Journal of Nutrition. The study by Australian scientists shows that a weekly hit of spicy food will keep your mind sharper for longer.

Turmeric has been identified as the most important and beneficial component, and is an ingredient used in almost every curry – from your mild and creamy kormas to extra hot and spicy vindaloos. Great news if you are a lover of spicy food – but what exactly is it about turmeric that helps prevent dementia?

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., and more than 5 million Americans are currently living with the debilitating disease. Even more terrifying is the fact that one in every three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or a similar form of dementia.

There is no known cure for the progressive disease, but scientists have found that there are various superfoods and natural remedies that can help slow down or prevent the development of the condition. The health benefits of turmeric are numerous, and it is thought that this spice alone is powerful enough to replace your entire medicine cabinet. The main component in the spice – curcumin – is thought to fight liver damage, cirrhosis, Parkinson’s, various types of cancer and now, dementia.

Curcumin is believed by scientists to block rogue proteins called beta amyloid, which clump together and destroy neurons, as reported by The Telegraph. The scientists at Edith Cowan University in Perth studied 96 participants aged between 40 and 90 over a period of 12 months. Some of the participants were given a daily placebo, while others were given curcumin pills.

The scientists then tested various verbal and memory skills, and found that those taking the placebo suffered a decline in mental function after only six months, while those taking curcumin saw no decline.

According to The Telegraph, there is already evidence revealing a lower prevalence of dementia and better cognitive function in cultures where curry is a staple part of diets. Curcumin therapy has also been trialed in animals.

Dr. Laura Phipps of Alzheimer’s Research UK is reserving judgment. She said: “Some studies have produced limited evidence very high doses of curcumin – much higher than might be normally found in foods like curry – could have some impact on memory and thinking skills, but large-scale clinical trials will be required before researchers can fully assess any potential benefits.”

Foods to avoid to prevent dementia and Alzheimer’s disease

If you are keen to minimize your chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease, you should avoid eating the following foods:

  • Foods high in aluminum: This additive is used in almost everything, including cheese, cake mixes and milk formulas. Aluminum is toxic to brain tissue, and has been linked to the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Foods high in artificial sweetener aspartame: This sugar substitute has been linked to brain tumors, seizures and dementia.
  • Foods high in mercury: These include farmed salmon, rice and high-fructose corn syrup. Long-term exposure to this toxin may produce Alzheimer’s-like symptoms.
  • Foods high in artificial flavoring diacetyl: This has been linked to dementia, and is a major component in snack foods such as buttered popcorn and beer.
