Of Bunkers & Bitcoin…& CERN Switzerland And…

Believe it or not, today’s blog may be related to the two previous days’ blogs. But what possible relationship could Bitcoin and for that matter, crypto-currencies in general have to CERN or to Argentina and the recent visits of Mr. Tillerson and Mr. Bezos there, to check out the “nature”.

Well, when Mr. M.A. sent the following article to me, he did so with some very suggestive high octane speculation of his own. He suggested that, perhaps, there might be a connection between CERN and crypto-currency mining. Why? Well, because there is a bunker in Switzerland which was built by the Swiss military as a command headquarters during the Cold War, and which now functions as a private corporate facility, surrounded by intense security, to guard crypto-currency encryption keys, the very things that drive blockchain:

The article itself points out the reason for all the security:

It’s odd to think of a virtual currency needing physical storage, but just like your most precious photos, cryptocurrencies need some kind of material container. A bitcoin vault doesn’t store actual bitcoin units. Technically, what’s being stored are private, cryptographic keys. These keys form a pair with public-facing keys and provide access to the balance of coins stored on the bitcoin network. Gaining unauthorized access to someone’s private key is akin to stealing their gold bar. The security protocol in the bunker is designed to ward off attacks from “well-funded terrorist groups or hackers.”

Stories of hackers finding their way through even the best-secured bitcoin accounts are legion, and—given that bitcoin was designed to make banks obsolete—it’s ironic that bank-like methods have to be used to keep cryptocurrencies safe.

If someone gets hold of your private key, there’s no way to claw the funds back or demand a refund. That’s why firms that store bitcoin like this one, called Xapo, are a juicy target—and why the bunker requires paranoiac levels of security.

But why would Mr. M.A. suggest a potential link to CERN? While his email was rather sketchy in details, I had to admit, as I allowed my own penchant for high octane speculation to run amok, he may have a point, for three basic reasons: (1) mining crypt-currencies requires a lot of electricity, something which CERN has in abundance; (2) mining crypto-currencies also requires a lot of computing power, something which CERN also has in an abundance rivaled probably only by the vast computing power of intelligence and signals-intercept agencies; and the real kicker is (3) CERN may be engaged in secret data analysis and correlation experiments, as I have speculated on numerous occasions. But it is also a sovereign entity, and could equally use that power as a means of very covert funding. Enter crypto-currencies, for as I’ve also pointed out on this site, stories have recently emerged that some very nefarious groups are using crypt-currencies to fund their operations and activities. So Mr. M.A.’s speculation may not be all that much of a stretch. (Hmmm… Switzerland, Templars, lots of money, Templar space satellites…. hmmm….)

But then, squatting in the middle of this article, something else caught my attention, and my jaw hit the floor. Recall that yesterday I blogged about the appearance of Mr. Jeff Bezos in Patagonia, tweeting about glaciers and saving the planet and space. Mr. Bezos, as most people know, is a billionaire, the founder of Amazon, owner of the Washington Post, and Amazon and the CIA are in turn related (and not just indirectly through the Post). Amazon is a huge database, if one wants to look at it a certain way, sitting on top of mountains of raw data of inestimable value to intelligence.

Mr. Bezos’ presence in Argentina is coincident with U.S. Secretary of State Tillerson’s, and again, Mr. Tillerson’s Argentinian junket began, not in Buenos Aires with a meeting with President Macri, but in San Carlos di Bariloche where, ostensibly, he was to give a speech to a nature preserve and meet with a Fullbright scholar.

Uh huh. Sure. Glaciers, Fullbright scholars, and nature preserves.

So what was squatting in the middle of the article?

Sit down, and have a couple of fingers of Jack Daniels, because this one is a stunner, and full of implications:

Xapo’s founder is the Argentinian entrepreneur Wences Casares, the “patient zero” of bitcoin among Silicon Valley’s elite. It was Casares who gave tech luminaries like Bill Gates and Reid Hoffman their first bitcoins. Carlos Rienzi, Xapo’s head of security, chose the vault, and he designed the private suite and its security protocols.(Emphasis added)

That’s right: the owner of this bunker, and one of the “founders” of Bitcoin, according to this article, and therefore, someone who sits on top of the Bitcoin op, is an Argentine “entrepreneur”.

Now let’s search for Senor Cesares. Wikipedia says this about him:

He is the founder and CEO of Xapo, a bitcoin wallet startup based in Palo Alto, California.^[2] Xapo is said to be the largest custodian of bitcoin in the world.^[3]Xapo has raised $40 million from leading Silicon Valley venture capital firms.^[4]

Casares sits on the board of PayPal and, as part of his non-profit activities, he serves on the board of Endeavor,^[5] a non-profit organization that promotes high-impact entrepreneurship in emerging markets and that was instrumental in his early success. He also served on the board of Kiva,^[6] a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty worldwide.

Originally from Patagonia, Argentina, Casares launched that country’s first Internet Service Provider, Internet Argentina S.A. in 1994, a company he would go on to sell in order to found the Argentine online brokerage Patagon in 1997. Patagon established itself as Latin America’s first comprehensive Internet financial services portal and expanded its online banking services to the United States, Spain, and Germany. Patagon was acquired by the Spanish bank, Banco Santander for $750 million which became Santader Online worldwide.

Oh… gee… look! He’s from Patagonia in Argentina!

And oh… gee…look: he has online banking services connected to Spain, the USA, and Germany!

And… wow… look again! It’s all being coordinated from a bunker!

Now the question is, who else, and what else, is he connected with?

And gee, this all sort of makes me wonder, with blockchain encryption, if crypto-currencies aren’t a perfect way to launder all sorts of missing money, and while doing so, manipulating their prices as well, kill two birds with one stone, so to speak…

Key Documents Removed From British Archives

This story is so strange that I have to do my usual high octane speculations about it. Ms. K.B. and Mr. V.T. and Mr. F.L.M. all shared this story, and with all the strangeness going on in the southern hemisphere, from missing Argentine submarines to Israelis buying up land in Patagonia and Terra del Fuego, I have to wonder just what is going on. Here’s the two versions of the story, though we’ll be concentrating on The Guardian’s version for reasons that will become apparent:

Now, if one looks at the Guardian’s version of this story, a number of questions arise:

Thousands of government papers detailing some of the most controversial episodes in 20th-century British history have vanished after civil servants removed them from the country’s National Archives and then reported them as lost.

Documents concerning the Falklands war, Northern Ireland’s Troubles and the infamous Zinoviev letter – in which MI6 officers plotted to bring about the downfall of the first Labour government – are all said to have been misplaced.

Other missing files concern the British colonial administration in Palestine, tests on polio vaccines and long-running territorial disputes between the UK and Argentina.

Almost 1,000 files, each thought to contain dozens of papers, are affected. In most instances the entire file is said to have been mislaid after being removed from public view at the archives and taken back to Whitehall. (Emphasis added)

Shades of the JFK files… If you’re like me, any time a government reports that it is missing files, it means that said government, for whatever reason, is hiding something. The idea of simply “losing” or mislaying files doesn’t wash in my book. But then the story takes a weird twist:

The Foreign Office subsequently told the National Archives that the papers taken were nowhere to be found.

After being questioned by the Guardian, it said it had managed to locate most of the papers and return them to the archives. A couple, however, are still missing. The FO declined to say why it had taken the papers, or whether it had copies.

Other files the National Archives has listed as “misplaced while on loan to government department” include one concerning the activities of the Communist party of Great Britain at the height of the cold war; another detailing the way in which the British government took possession of Russian government funds held in British banks after the 1917 revolution; an assessment for government ministers on the security situation in Northern Ireland in the early 1970s; and three files about defence agreements between the UK and newly independent Malaya in the late 1950s, shortly before the two countries went to war with Indonesia.

The disappearances highlight the ease with which government departments can commandeer official papers long after they have been declassified and made available to historians and the public at the archives at Kew, south-west London. (Emphasis added)

In other words, these files were already public, and then removed from view, and most of them then returned.

Given the recurrence of references to “territorial disputes with Argentina”, the Falklands war, and British administration, I cannot help but wonder if this sudden “removal and return” might somehow be related to the strange story that emerged at the end of last year about Israeli real estate purchases in southern Argentina, the missing Argentine submarine, and so on. Why remove and then return documents? Something must have caused some concerns, and of all the things being listed, the Argentine aspect of the documents missing seems to be a thread winding through it all. Indeed, if one were concerned that some sensitive detail might have escaped the censors vetting documents for declassification, one might create false leads and trails by removing documents relating to Zinoviev, or Northern Ireland, and so on. (The confiscation and seizure of Russian assets after the Bolshevik revolution – given the current state of emerging financial warfare between the West and that country, does have relevance.) Given the associations of southern Argentina with prominent post-war Nazi installations in that part of that country, the visits of US presidents to the same region, the presence of the Chinese there, Israel’s presence there raises eyebrows, and surely would cause British intelligence and security to make “discrete inquiries”.

This may be, of course, a “nothing story,” but documents are not removed, and then partially returned, with some reason. My bet is that it has something to do with what is going on down there, and with some very old stories dating from the end of the war, and possibly with missing Argentine submarines and new Israeli real estate interests in the region.

The GMO Scrapbook: 2016 Ends With Bad News For IG Farbensanto

If you’ve been following the GMO issue, or more precisely, what I’ve been calling “GMO geopolitics” over the last few years, then 2016 did not end on an “upbeat” note for Mon(ster)santo, or as I also like to call the GMO “agribusiness ‘community'”, IG Farbensanto. In fact, so many people sent me so many articles these past few days about GMO news that I decided to lump them all together in a kind of “GMO news grab bag” in this blog, because when one considers all these separate stories together, then a very interesting pattern emerges. Consider these stories: first, a recent study of GMO corn establishes that it is… well… garbage:

China and the Butterfly Effect (Revolt against GMOs grows locality by locality)

Even the New York Times finally gets it (it took them long enough! but hey, nice of you guys to finally get with it after so many years) and points out the conflict of interest culture pervading government agencies with corporate lackeys:

And the revolt spreads to Argentina and Italy:

And finally, Russia, which has banned GMOs, is proposing a labeling law for the entire Eurasian Economic Community:

Normally, as regular readers here know, I tend to focus my commentary on one or at most two articles per blog, But there’s something very intriguing going on here, something that I cannot help but indulge in a little of our trademark high octane speculation. First, note the dates of these stories, in order, from the first to the last linked articles above, are as follows:

1) Dec. 19, 2016 (the scientific study)

2) Dec. 27, 2016 (the F. William Engdahl article on the Chinese provincial ban)

3) Dec. 28, 2016 (the New York Times article)

4) Dec. 28, 2016 (the article about the Argentine Federal Prosecutor)

5) Dec. 26, 2016 (the Italian-EU GMO ban)

6) Dec. 27, 2016 (the Russian proposal for GMO labeling in the EEU)

In other words, yet another damning story about the “assured science” of GMO safety appeared, followed quickly by stories of GMO bans in China, Italy, Argentina, and a story about the Russian proposal for an EEU-wide GMO standardized labeling law, and a New York Times article about the double-standard culture of conflicts of interest between big government agencies and corporate science.

Now I’m far from suggesting that there’s a direct causal relationship between all these stories. There isn’t. But I do suggest that there is a contextual causal relationship between then, for the science – some of which we’ve attempted to cover on this website – behind GMO “safety” is anything but settled, and increasingly looks to be very dubious at best. What all these stories suggest is that the issue is “getting out there”, no doubt in part because of the resolute opposition to GMOs by countries such as Russia, and the more quiet but questioning attitude of China and other countries. In the case of China, as Engdahl points out, the provincial ban is bucking the line being put out in Beijing, but there may be quiet economic considerations working behind the scenes, economic considerations that, in fact, dovetail perfectly with Beijing’s long term silk road strategies:

On December 16, 2016, the Provincial Heilongjiang Legislature passed a total ban on the growing of Genetically Modified or GMO crops. The ban goes into effect on May 1, 2017, in some five months. Farmers in China’s Heilongjiang province, one of China’s top grain producing regions, will be prohibited from growing GMO crops, according to the provincial regulation just passed. According to the new law, the ban will be on growing of GMO corn, rice and soybeans. Further, illegal production and sales of GMO crops and supply of their seeds will also be prohibited, as will be illegal production, processing, sale and imports of edible GMO farm produce or edible farm products that contain GMO ingredients. Any GMO food can only be sold in a special zone, clearly indicated in stores as GMO food products, a variation on labelling.

The legislature acted after a broad survey of the provincial population in October revealed that more than 91% of the population objected to the cultivation of GMO crops. The official ban follows discovery this past September that some 10% of Heilongjiang soybean farmers were illegally planting smuggled GMO soybean seeds despite the fact that the Beijing national government still bans planting of GMO commercial crops, allowing so far only controlled research to be done on GMO “biotechnology.” The farmers had been told, wrongly, that GMO seeds would increase their harvest yields. Farmers found guilty of growing illegal GMO crops face a fine of up to 200,000 yuan or $31,480. In China, owing to a US-promoted loophole in ban on GMO, GMO soybeans as animal feed are allowed in China. Some 60% of all soybeans consumed in China is, as a result of that unfortunate loophole, today GMO. Monsanto and other Western GMO purveyors promote their GMO seeds at agriculture fairs and farmers can buy the seeds online, even though planting is illegal.

In August the giant Chinese state chemicals group, ChemChina made a staggering $43 billion bid to acquire the Swiss GMO seeds and agrochemicals group, Syngenta. Recently Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Prime Minister have given very positive statements about the potential of GMO and biotechnology to contribute to the push to make China a high-tech economic actor. The latest decision of the people and legislature in Heilongjiang sends a clear signal opposing that Beijing strategy.

The butterfly effect of the Heilongjiang ban on GMO crops will definitely affect future agriculture relations between China and neighboring Russia. Heilongjiang Province has the longest common border with Russia of any province, the two countries’ boundary demarcated by the Amur River. Earlier this year, the Russian Federation’s Duma approved, and President Putin signed a law banning all commercial cultivation of GMO crops in the Russian Federation. The Heilongjiang ban potentially can open up Sino-Russian grain trade on a GMO-free basis, creating new synergies.

And that I suspect, is the real pattern and story here, as countries increasingly wake up to the fact that the science of GMOs, of their safety and even of their long term productivity over ordinary “heirloom” seeds, is dubious at best and debatable at a minimum. To put my high octane speculation as nakedly as possible: these articles attest to the emergence in 2017 of my long-predicted “GMO geopolitics,” which we may define as “a pattern of contrarian science, coupled with national or regional policy, to drive a revolt against American pro-GMO policy and the influence it has had on US foreign policy” (consider only the GMO story hovering in the background of the mess in The Ukraine). At a much deeper level, there is an epistemological and policy formation culture that we see emerging with this GMO geopolitics – a game Russia is playing with much greater facility than anyone else – and that is the formation of a global culture, based in science, informing provincial, national and regional policy. Town Comes Together & Forces Monsanto Genetically Modified Organism Seed Facility To Be Dismantled

Argentina — Residents of an Argentinian town have forced one of Monsanto’s half-completed GMO seed plants to be dismantled. Activists have been marching, petitioning, and talking to the government as well as Monsanto for three years now to urge them to disallow the company’s latest expansion — a multi-million dollar, genetically modified seed plant in Malvinas, Argentina.

In a bid to gain local support, Monsanto once said:

“Cordobeses (residents of Córdoba) will be proud to have one of the most important [seed-producing] plants in the world . . .The more than one thousand employees of Monsanto Argentina are proud and thankful to be a part of the community of Malvinas, Argentina.”

The sentiment was not shared among a massive number of Malvinas residents, however. Prior to this grass-roots success, thousands of members of the Malvinas community blockaded Monsanto’s construction site. A Monsanto spokesperson said the plant was designed to treat 3.5 million hectares of maize. He argued that only 2.5 million hectares were actually sown, and this was the reason why Monsanto was pulling out of the project.

Argentinians were court-ordered to disperse from Monsanto’s planned GMO seed site, but instead of giving up, reinforcements were brought in to strengthen the blockade. Monsanto continued the fight in the courtroom, but it looks as though those attempts to further their plans have also now been thwarted.

There are ongoing lawsuits over the construction site’s environmental impact

Argentina’s people are familiar with Monsanto in numerous other aspects. The multinational company has also manufactured chemicals like Agent Orange, toxic plastics, and GM soy there. Monsanto is also well known for changing the country’s beef from a grass diet to a GM-grain diet.

The news that Monsanto will pull out of their bid to expand GMO seed production in at least one Argentinian town is favorable, considering how long community members and non-GMO activists have been trying to be heard.

Sofia Gatica, one of the leaders of the blockade to Monsanto’s construction site, told Inf’OGM that “It’s been almost three years that Monsanto has not been able to put a brick or a wire at the construction site … The company is leaving the field but does not yet recognize its defeat in this battle. We talked with those who have to dismantle what remains. We remain on alert and continue blocking, waiting to see what will happen. We want the site to now be devoted to organic and sustainable agriculture.”

Glyphosate weed killer, heavily used in conjunction with genetically modified crops, is being blamed for a sharp rise in grotesque, horrific animal mutations taking place in Argentina (see horrifying photos below).

While this story will never appear in the corporate-controlled U.S. media, the UK-based Daily Mail reports that the mutations “look like something from a horror movie – a black dog with a mini trunk protruding from its nose. The baby yellow chick with not two but four feet, the spider piglet with one head, two bodies and eight legs, the goat with two heads and the baby pig with skin so wafer thin you can see the muscles and blood flowing around its body.”

“Farmers blame harsh chemical Glyphosate for causing the mutations,” reports the Daily Mail, adding that “local media said that the deformation was due to the use of pesticides on farmland in the region.”

Local who were not aware of the toxicity of glyphosate originally thought the mutations were caused by evil spirits or some sort of demonic curve. But “blame has shifted to the widespread use of the harsh chemical glyphosate which is used as a pesticide,” reports Daily Mail UK:

Argentina is the world’s biggest user of the controversial product, which kills all non-genetically modified (GM) crops. The country supplies GM soya beans that are fed to animals in the UK, and cotton that is used in the manufacture of everything from T-shirts through to tampons. EU policy makers are considering banning the harmful chemical which is known to cause serious birth defects in both animals and humans.

This very unusual story was shared by Mr. K.L. a regular reader and contributor of articles here, and this one I have to pass along, for it deals directly with President Obama’s recent visit to Argentina, and a summit with newly-elected Argentine President Macri in – you guessed it – San Carlos di Bariloche. I don’t need to rehearse the significance of Bariloche for this readership, but siffice it to say, that visit raised my suspicion meter into the red zone. But this story perhaps sheds a bit more light on the behind-the-scenes reasons for the summit’s odd location, for as many discovered, Mr. Obama was not the first or only high-ranking American leader to visit the resort city and Patagonia:

This is already shaping up to be one of the strangest periods for news in recent memory, for consider only the recent revelations from Israel’s Ha Aretz that it had at one time hired SS Colonel Otto Skorzeny as a contract hitman. It’s the timing that is odd, especially given the recent “summit” of Presidents Macri and Obama in San Carlos di Bariloche in Argentina’s souther Rio Negro Province. For anyone paying attention to the history of the area, it’s a well-known “Nazi haven”.

But now there’s even stranger news, and it concerns the fact that in sponsoring Isis terrorism, the kingdom of Saudi Arabia may be experiencing the mere beginning of that classic covert operations phenomenon called “blow back”:

Obama, Bariloche & That Chinese Space Base In Patagonia

Last week I blogged about the strange visit of President Obama to President Macri of Argentina, in the southern Argentine city of San Carlos di Bariloche. As most readers of my books are aware, that fact alone sent my Suspicion Meter into the Red Zone, for the Rio Negro region of Argentina was (or is that “is”) the home of a large community of, well, “veterans” from World War Two, and I don’t mean Allied veterans. Rumors abound in the region from Argentine locals of hideaways for Hitler, for (more importantly) Martin Bormann, and other high-ranking Nazis. As I wrote in my books SS Brotherhood of the Bell and The Nazi international, local researchers, including British researcher Geoffrey Brooks, maintain that the celebrated Nazi Bell project went, not to the USA, but to Argentina, a possibility that I think has great merit, given the detailed postwar connections of Dr. Ronald Richter’s “fusion” project for Juan Peron with that project, including the same German company!

So, needless to say, my suspicion meter went into the red zone.

But there’s more apparently going on in middle and southern Argentina than simply Bavarian chalets and plastic surgery clinics cum-hotels. China has also a major interest in the region for its space program:

Contrary to any explanations that this might be the real reason for Mr. Macri and Mr. Obama having frank discussions in Bariloche, this only raises my Suspicion Meter even more. Why? Well, for one thing, even though the government of Ms. Fernandez-de Kirchner has been replaced with a more “pro-USA” government, it would be foolish to assume that Argentinians have forgotten all about the ongoing disputes over its debt to western hedge funds, nor that they have forgotten about American unipolarism. Under Ms. Kirchner, Argentina expressed a quiet desire to associate with the BRICSA bloc, and in the long term, I do not think in the long term this will change.

Yesterday I blogged about a report that allegedly was circulating in the Kremlin regarding GMOs, vaccinations, and the general state of the West’s “food” sup;ly and “nutrition.” In that blog, I raised again an idea that I have been advancing for some years regarding “GMO geopolitics,” i.e., the idea that the BRICSA bloc, if it was smart, would seek to transform the GMO debate and issue into a gepolitical issue, ie. an issue of the exercise of soft power. To do this, I’ve been maintaining that it could carefully position itself on the side of those who are increasingly raising concerns about the safety of such products. Yesterday, it will be recalled, Russia apparently has now expanded this to encompass the link between autism and the slew of vaccinations that big pharma increasingly presses in the West, and in some cases, successfully lobbies for mandatory vaccination rules.

It seems in this respect that things are also heating up on the GMO issue in India, where there has been a rising concern and political opposition to GMOs, according to this article that many have shared:

Monsanto threatens to quit Indian GM-cotton market if govt cuts its royalties

Here’s the crux of the matter:

American agrochemical giant Monsanto has threatened to pull out of India and hold back new genetically modified cotton technologies if the government continues its “arbitrary and potentially destructive” interventions that seek to cut the company’s royalty fees.

Last year the Indian government issued an order to control cotton seed prices effective from the 2016-17 crop year. In a ruling, the antitrust regulator, Competition Commission of India, accused the GMO giant of potentially abusing its dominant position on the market. The Agriculture Ministry set up a special committee tasked with implementing brackets for seed price along with royalty fees, after the completion of an investigation into the matter.
