Journey

“The only impossible journey is the one you never begin”
– Anthony Robbins

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than the ones you did do.  So throw off the bowlines.  Sail away from safe harbor.  Catch the trade wins in your sails.  Explore.  Dream.  Discover.”
– Mark Twain

Five months into the year, everyone seems to have settled in rather well.  Everyone’s going about their lives how they see fit, and going through the motions.  It’s that last part though, ‘going through the motions’, that gets me ruminating.

The first day of this year, as in the first day of every single New Year, is the day where without a shadow of a doubt most people go to the gym by far.  This is in part due to society seeing a ‘new’ year as a new opportunity to begin something anew.  This isn’t bad, per se, but the fact that many people choose to wait for the year to end in order to make changes has often seemed paradoxical to me.  Why not live every day to the fullest?  Why wait for tomorrow, when you can do something today?  Perhaps it’s because we’re accustomed to think tomorrow is always there, and thus the chance is always there.  But tomorrow at times turns into next year, and next year turns into regrets.

That said, after going to the gym for five months, anyone can begin to see the bifurcation between individuals who have the will to achieve their goals, and those that do not.  And given that going to the gym affects health, which is arguably the most important component of someone’s life, it’s regrettable that what many individuals once thought possible to achieve in health has unfortunately gone by the wayside.

Stravaging through life’s journey without purpose and determination, or with less than one is capable of, is definitely living life with a cup nigh empty.  That’s just my contention however, perhaps yours is different.  My intention is not to bedevil any individual, but to get them to ruminate upon their individual potential and to see more possibilities in their path, to get more out of life, to get more out of every moment.  After all, isn’t that what we all want?

If that is the case, and every single one of us wishes to gain more from life, why is it we sell ourselves short many a time?  Each of us will undoubtedly have a different answer, but a sagacious focus on merely exercising their mental faculties in a sound manner would leave any individual better off by.  There in, perhaps, mental obstacles are abrogated in some shape or form, and the individual is free to saunter onto the next leg of their journey to proceed towards their next goal.

The will to act must remain at the vanguard however.   Once an individual’s utmost volition is employed in its most incisive matter, bringing about change will become indelible.  This doesn’t mean there won’t be hard work involved, nor obstacles to overcome, far from it.  The facade of change cannot be overcome without considerable effort, but in the end, by repeatedly pondering on what will galvanize the individual, and following through with keen observations that are coupled with action, individuals stand to gain more than by merely ‘going through the motions’ as mentioned earlier.

Becoming inured to an autopilot mentality and maintaining less than optimal decisions certainly prevents significant change from ensuing.  That is why it is essential to remain relentlessly focused on what our goals are and what we seek to gain from life.  With precise action backing the blueprint of our better life, we then are able to see what we are truly capable of, thus beginning to notice that are potential is far higher than ever pondered upon.

From there, each of the steps builds on its own, each obstacle brings a new lesson, and each pit-stop along life’s journey brings us new adventures.  But significant change can only begin after that special juncture is reached, where that choice is made – that first step onto a new path.  These types of choices, when made from our deepest self, change us resoundingly, deeply and truly.

Not tomorrow, not next year, right now.   The first step is always the hardest, but it begins to path to the greatest growth.

Why not take it now?

300 Word Memories #9 – Taking Things For Granted

GoodEvil

May 3, 2017

Life has many intricacies that make it worth living.  It is in these intricacies, these auspicious moments that life seems to take a rather unique flavor.  Every day presents a new journey, every hour offers a new possibility, every moment is a gift to be had and appreciated.

As life begins ticking down the seconds, minutes, and days of our lives, and we get wrapped up in our daily routines, it’s easy to forget how precious and unique each of our lives is.  These leads to many people, myself included, to begin taking things for granted.

For example, one thing many people tend to take for granted is health.  People tend to think that because they seem healthy, they are healthy.  And then, ‘out of nowhere’ a diagnosis with a serious chronic disease hits them, utterly blind-siding them.  Whether the disease is cancer, diabetes, heart disease, MS, or something else, diseases don’t come out of nowhere.  This happens because the body has stopped being at-ease, and now is in a state of dis-ease.

While it seems obvious, things that seem to be common sense these days get overlooked all the time, which makes me believe that common sense is not so common, which is why I call it [un]common sense quite a bit.

I become disheartened seeing these events take place because we live in an age where people know more than any other age in history, and yet ignorance is more rampant than ever, especially ignorance about health.

If people take health for granted, which is arguably the most precious thing in life, what else are they taking for granted?

I am only ruminating here, particularly because I’ve been there, as many of you have as well.  That said, after being hospitalized half a dozen times and spending months in the hospital, I quit taking my health for granted.  This is also a reason why I share a lot of natural and alternative health information in this blog.

What I have learned is that there’s two ways we as individuals go through life.  We either contribute to a positive state of being in every single way, for ourselves, and others, which affects our heart, mind, body, and soul.  Or we contribute to a negative state.  Each and every single choice we make contributes to one of these two states, and there really is no in between.  There’s no half-way to healthy.  An individual is either healthy, or they aren’t.  Moreover, the combined net effects of these choices, hopefully positive contributions, will have a compound effect.   Having better health, helps your mind, body, and allows you to be in a better state of awareness.  When we have a clear mind, it is easier to make high quality decisions about all aspects in life.  The same goes for everything else.  Unfortunately, the opposite is also true.

Ultimately, life is about the quality of choices we make.  If we carry out high-quality decisions in life, we will have high quality results.  If we make poor-quality choices in life, we will have poor quality results.  It’s that simple.

That being said, for me, after almost having a dance with the reaper, choosing whether to be healthy or not wasn’t even a choice.  If I wanted to live a healthy meaningful and fulfilling life, I had to do everything possible and be proactive rather than reactive as I had been in the past.

No more taking things for granted, especially important things.  I am not going to become a statistic.

My only hope is that more people realize what they take for granted before it’s too late.  Lucky for me, I was able to re-steer the ship of my life into a new direction.  Unfortunately many do not have that opportunity.

We are the choices we make, and the totality of this accrues for better or worse, but in the end, we are in control, each and every single one of us.  Knowing that, let’s be cognizant and make high quality decisions every single day.

300 Word Memories #8 – Bruce Lee, Individuality & Freedom

BruceLee3

Bruce Lee is one unique, timeless and prodigious individual.

Lee’s widely known for his martial arts prowess, but he was quite the philosopher as well.  He is definitely a mind that strove to learn as much as possible, from as many places as possible.

In college, Bruce Lee ended up taking a philosophy course that would change his life.  From this impetus, Lee sought to learn from the greatest thinkers in the world.  Interestingly, he chose to remain open minded in his new ventures in learning.  Lee did not narrow down his exploration to any particular philosophy or culture.  Instead, he sought to learn from all of them.

This foundation upon which he built his philosophy – ranging the full breadth of everyone he learned from  – strengthened him as an individual.  It matters not whether from East or West, ancient or modern, Bruce Lee went above and beyond to learn from the full breadth and scope available in history.

And yet, even though many people saw Lee as a teacher, he often said:

“A teacher is never a giver of truth; he is a guide, a pointer to the truth that each student must find for himself.  A good teacher is merely a catalyst.”[1][Bold Emphasis Added]

For me, in this current moment, there is no better catalyst to learn from than Lee.  Having read dozens of his aphorisms this last week, there’s been much learned from his insights.  Particularly, Lee was as flexible an individual as ever existed.  He did not restrict himself into any particular type of
thought, system, or belief.  In fact, he was loathe to blind obedience and external authority.

This resonates deeply with me, because as someone who is regularly pointing out that part of society seeks to conform you and mold into what they want, learning from someone who espoused true individuality is a breath of fresh air.  And unbounded individuality ultimately leads to Freedom.

Lee elucidates:

True observation begins when one sheds set patterns, and true freedom of expression occurs when one is beyond systems.”[2][Bold Emphasis Added]

Being beyond systems, being beyond conformity is the true way of the Individual, and that is the ultimate gateway to Freedom.

In that respect, there’s much to learn from Bruce Lee.

For those keen reasons, and many others, that’s why individuals should seek to learn as much as they can from Lee, or anyone else that resonates with their inner being.  Not to conform to any preconceived idea or beliefs, but to learn to be fluid, to learn to be free.  Ponder these ideas deeply and ruminate upon what suits you best, for only you know what is best for you.

In life, the most honest self-expression is Individual Freedom, and the most powerful catalyst for this is by being in tune with your innermost self.   It is in this understanding that we will be able to live life to the fullest.

And isn’t that what life is about?

300 Word Memories #6 – Convalescing

solitude2

March 21, 2017

Sometimes, in life, you just need to slow down, pump the breaks.

Although I personally don’t do anything I would consider ‘fast’ paced, sometimes I get so caught up in getting things done [don’t we all?] that I forget to take moments for myself.  Over time, I have learned that these moments are integral to staying fresh and keeping a great outlook on life, and also in keeping perspective of yourself and everything around you.

With experience, this perspective has taught me quite a few things about life and myself.  Regarding my life, it’s always been a point for me not to waste time, as this post here hints, and in being as efficient as possible.  That idea is great, and it does have its benefits, it’s just that sometimes we get saw caught in the tide of today that we forget about the lessons of yesterday and about the possibilities of tomorrow.  How we all get to our present moments matter, and if an individual arrives at their present moment in a full ready state, then it not only feels like a lot is getting done, but they feel like the time was worth something.

If, on the other hand, it feels that the individual was  running around the rat wheel, depleting their energy without much aim or direction, then it can feel like a giant waste of time, or perhaps that a person is selling themselves short.  That is why is crucial of knowing yourself, your boundaries, how you operate, what makes you efficient, and what doesn’t.  These ideas should be front and center in introspection.

At the moment, the one thing that’s been lacking for me this last week or so is rest.   Not a whole lot of rest, but enough that it makes a difference.  When a person misses an hour or two of sleep for nigh a week straight, it’s time to take the next turn off on the road and book a hotel.

For me, it’s not that I haven’t been getting things done, it’s just that it feels that if I continue with just one more day of anything, without putting my health first, then, I stand to have my health spiral out of control.

That has taught me that whatever you do, on a personal basis just make sure that you’re working with a full tank a gas, mentally, physically, and even spiritually, and that you’re not ill-equipped to venture into the morrow without at least a full and ready version of yourself.

Another additional issue is that if you’re lacking ample rest, you can’t just usually get one day’s of sleep and be done with it.  You need to make sure to hit the refilling station regularly and do what you can before you really end up bottoming out and issues begin multiplying like rabbits.  The last thing anyone wants is to screw up simply because you were doing too much, or trying to hard.  Irony would surely be waiting to give a raised eyebrow at that one.

But when you’re rested and prepared, and your mind is clear, then anything is possible.

Each of us has a long journey ahead of us.  Might as well carry it out with the best version of yourself possible.  Because if not, how else are we going to live life to the fullest?

300 Word Memories #5 – Friendship

friendship
TheBreakaway
Zy Marquiez
March 6, 2017

Friendship is something that we all share with someone to varying degrees, and under a variety of circumstances.  Friends, true friends, should be able to go through thick and thin, no matter what the obstacle.  The greater the obstacle, the quicker one will find out who their friends are.  With that said, with the recent divide and conquer left-right paradigm political climate that always takes place during election, lots of friendships were tested.

Recently, noticed myself that a lot of people kept throwing other individuals they considered ‘friends’ under the bus, simply because those people employed varying beliefs.  Saw this take place literally dozens of times over the last six months, and it’s quite mindboggling to say the least.  In fact, it’s still taking place to some extent.

All of these issues make me wonder if the virtue of friendship hasn’t been cheapened, when compared to what it was like in the past, when say, people like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were friends.  Mind you, Tolkien and Lewis, although sharing much in common, did not agree on everything.

This increasing pattern makes me wonder whether or not what people call friendship nowadays is nothing more than a shell of its former ideal.

Ironically, the very people throwing others under the bus for being who they really are, are themselves the ones demanding other individuals to respect those very same qualities.   Talk about hypocritical!

In a world where people gain ‘friends’, seemingly with every new minute, it does seem that to some extent the quality of friendship/acquaintances has been cheapened.  But perhaps, by that very nature, when true unbounded friendship is achieved, it is vastly more meaningful than it ever could be.

It seems with time, more and more people just want others to be a clone of themselves.  They want to talk to a mirror for the rest of their lives.  They want the mirror to reply, exactly how they themselves would reply.  Every.  Single.  Time.  That’s a highly disturbing proposition.

What’s the world coming to when other people want to literally program you to be who they want you to be?  Perhaps, this is taking place because from the bottom up, that’s exactly what the system does to us.

From youth, the public school system has taught society how to conform in astounding degrees.  This can be seen here, here, and here.  So it’s no wonder that now the people that have been conforming their whole lives want others to conform.  That doesn’t justify what’s taking place, but it helps shed a shred of light unto this conundrum.

Regardless of that, however, if there’s one positive thing to take from this it is that, if someone’s not your true friend, they will just be an anchor upon your ship, and hold you back.  Nothing positive can come from someone that wishes you to conform, regardless of what you believe.  That simply shows these people did not respect nor value the friendship and what it truly means.

Just as a ship can’t move while being held back by the weight of a broken anchor that can’t be pulled back, some individuals won’t be able to move forward through life with people holding them back in similar fashion.  That’s why it’s vital to breakaway from toxic relationships.

After all, those who really are your friends, deep down inside, will never put you through such circumstances.  In fact, they will go with you above in beyond, through hell and back and always be there, right by your side, to the end – because that’s what true friendship is about.

300 Word Memories #4 – Solitude

solitude2
TheBreakaway
Zy Marquiez
March 4 , 2017

“The important thing in our understanding is to have a smooth, free-thinking way of observation.  We have to think and to observe things without stagnation.  We should accept things as they are without difficulty.  Our mind should be soft and open enough to understand things as they are.  When our thinking is soft, it is called imperturbable thinking.  This kind of thinking is always testable.  It is called mindfulness.”
– Shunryu Suzuki, Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind

“Conversation enriches the understanding, but solitude is the school of genius.”
– Edward Gibbon

There are two ways to live life.  Individuals can live in total awareness, like a newborn child who’s fully in tune and engaged with the full scale of their surroundings, which echoes wonder in every way shape or form.  Or, on the other hand, we can live in unawareness, where we are so detached where even the simplest things get by us.  This state is not unlike floating through life, like a leaf in the wind, letting life take you where it may.  In contrast, the opposite of that is the fish that is aware of its environment, and will swim with the tide when it’s advantageous, but will immediately change course and go against the tide when life demands it.

When individuals lack awareness, really simple things get by their defenses.  Examples of these are when we lose our keys, misplace our phone or the remote, forget an appointment, etc.  Each of these circumstances shows our lack of being in tune with our environments, which stems from being out of sync with our inner self.

On the opposite side of that spectrum lies awareness.

Awareness is walking outside, and noticing the warmth of the sun as it seeps through your skin; breathing in and feeling a full breath of fresh air as it goes fully into your lungs and feeling the energy it gives you; hearing how the birds chirp down the street even though the sound of traffic strains to override it; sensing someone’s emotions on a deeper level, even though you’ve only had a moment’s notice to pay attention to them; or even sensing something on instincts which would drift by someone if they weren’t paying attention.  All of these instances are felt deep down inside the individual, because they are aware.  But perhaps, one of the best ways to realize your awareness is locked in, like an athlete in the zone, is by being able to hear the stillness in your mind – the silence; full solitude.

In the silence we are capable of ascertaining more.  When the mind is cluttered, however, and filled to the brim, it is like a full cup of water, incapable of taking one more drop.  Worse, when merely one more drop of water gets added to the cup, the critical point arises where that one drop helps dislodge more than a magnitude of the single drop that went in, not unlike the person who faces one problem and has it spiral out of control into many issues.  Most of us including myself are probably familiar with these types of circumstances.  That is why pumping the breaks is crucial before we get to the point of no return.

Slowing down from our proverbial warp speed is when we as individuals are capable of understanding more, when we retain the maximum efficiency of our capabilities since we are fully engaged.   That very moment is when we are – as individuals – capable of functioning at a higher degree of understanding, a higher degree of knowing.  And one of the highest degrees of knowing is that of the self – that of your inner-most being.

It’s in the silence that our answers reside, in the stillness of the vacuum – in the solitude of life.

But don’t believe any of this; in fact, strive to disbelieve.  Seek your own answers – through every step of your life, throughout every breath, in full awareness, always.

300 Word Memories #3 – Synchronicities

colletiveconsciousness
TheBreakaway
Zy Marquiez
March 2, 2017

“There are only two ways to live your life.  One is though nothing is a miracle.  The other is as though everything is a miracle.”
– Albert Einstein

“Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.”
– Ralph Waldo Emerson

As a preamble, the term synchronicity was coined by Dr. Carl Gustav Jung nigh a century ago.  For our purpose, synchronicity is based upon the inherent connection that connects us all, which stems from Jung’s idea of a collective consciousness.  Essentially, synchronicity is multiple events taking place at the same time, which are directly related at the core, although conventional thinking would state otherwise.

Knowing that, have you ever ran into a particular circumstance in which you were searching for somewhere, something, or someone, and have that exact thing you are looking for just synchronistically fall in your lap?

This has been the type of event that has been taking place in my life for the better part of ten years, and its results have always infused me with increase of positivity, drive, poise and resolve.  Having what you sought be shown to you is almost like the Universe throwing you a bone per se.

For instance, the reason for writing about this is because this very type of event just happened minutes ago.  After searching adamantly for a bit of time it “just so happened” that the very information that was being searched for by myself was not only available, but there for the taking.  I am not talking about searching for things which are easy to find, either.  I am strictly speaking about particular things which require extended research for the most part.

Admittedly, it’s my contention that the reason this happens is because my eyes are open to these possibilities.  Having learned through experience, I have learned to pay extra attention for the signature circumstances that might be beneficial for me to take advantage of it.  In hindsight, there were many instances that my eyes were not open, although opportunity was knocking on the door nonstop.

Part of the reason for missing these opportunities was because my awareness was nigh non-existent, and the lifestyle lead by me just wasn’t as positive and conducive towards positive things.  My life didn’t follow a negative path, per se, but it was just a cookie-cutter lifestyle that’s laden with poor choices to boot which plagued everything from my health, finances, mind, spirit, and soul.

Now however, after having learned from my mistakes, and those of others, it’s become easier to be able to pick up on these small signposts that are available for the taking.  Am thankful because, had some of these very lucky draws life threw me earlier weren’t noticed by me, my life would be drastically different, and definitely not for better.

In contrast, there’s at least two ways that these synchronicities, at least in my life, can be taken.  These synchronicities may be seen as either completely meaningless, as pure dominoes of destiny smashing into each other with no sense or purpose.  Or, perhaps there’s more.

Perhaps, all of these instances are something emblematic of something else taking place.

Whether it is  having someone ‘random’ get your attention and you hitting the breaks before getting t-boned by a car that ran a red light; whether it’s a small note falling ‘randomly’ out of someone’s backpack which points to the direction you sought to find; whether it’s that person calling you reminding you of that one thing you never told them about that you need to get done, but which they ‘happen’ to know of nonetheless; whether it’s that post on social media that you’ve been looking for, for years due to its ramifications and someone that you don’t even know posted it because they ‘felt like it’, and that drives you to create something unique and phenomenal; whether it’s that one piece of wisdom that’s so profound that changes your life, and happened to be written by someone else within a book that you didn’t even want in the first place – all of these contain signature synchronicities.

Synchronicities, to those aware, are like shooting stars for the taking, plucked out of the canvas of creation that is life, to be repurposed of your life.

So, Life can be seen as either boring, meaningless, and purposeless, which is one way to look at it.

Or, Life is an adventure of growth, meaning, and elation, which has an underlying function for a greater purpose.

Don’t know about you, but my life’s been a lot of things, but certainly never purposeless, meaningless, and definitely not boring!

What say you?
