When will the government of the United States of America ever actually help Americans get healthy, and duly inform consumers about all food ingredients by utilizing honest food labels instead of using trickery and deception? Every year, the FDA and the USDA approve more and more food toxins, while covering up the health detriment they cause, all while leading people down a dark corridor of poor health.

Does it really matter if you “count calories” if all those calories are empty ones, devoid of all nutrition? Will it be helpful to limit or eliminate your “fat” intake, if you only limit or eliminate all the good fats – the kind your body needs to function properly? Did your MD bother to educate you about the difference between good fats and molecularly-altered “bad” fats? Labels were first focused on how much fat you eat, but since the FDA doesn’t educate anyone on bad fat versus good fat, it never mattered.

What if you get excited about some new labels on food because you’re supposed to watch your cholesterol, only to find out that you need cholesterol and your medical doctor and the labels steered you completely wrong? And then there’s sugar – the sugar that comes from genetically modified corn, highly concentrated (HFCS) which contains bug-killer and weed-killer that leads directly to cancer and diabetes. What difference does it really make if you “moderate” your poison intake? It’s still poison. Will you brag to your friends that you’re regulating and “reducing” your own poison intake because some new food labels are helping you?

More ‘Big Food’ propaganda disguised as food label modifications

The FDA is actually announcing that serving sizes will be “less misleading.” How about not misleading at all? What if someone told you they would be less abusive to you – would you be excited about that? The size of the “calories” number will be much bigger and bolder. Now we are to “count calories” more easily, as if it matters whether you eat the whole can of toxic chili or half, or whether you eat six donuts or four, or you chomp down half the sack of hydrogenated-GM-oil-soaked chips or the whole bag.

Labels will give a new “percent daily value” for sugars, letting you know how much sugar is recommended for your “daily intake.” This is supposed to influence food manufacturers to put in less sugar at the factory. Does that mean they will simply insert more of those deadly chemical sweeteners in order to compensate for America’s sweet tooth, like aspartame, sucralose, sorbitol, saccharine and acesulfame potassium?

Basically each whole package of food will be a serving, so obese people feel less obese, and diabetics may feel less diabetic. No more guilt for eating that party-size bag of chips. That’s just one serving! Wait, you ate a whole box of cookies and drank a half-gallon of conventional milk? No problem. That was just a single serving.

The FDA is saying that, by law, serving sizes should be based on actual consumption habits and not ideal consumption, and since more than a third of Americans are obese, and half of the rest are overweight, that “Big Gulp” at 7/11 will become one serving. Are two double cheeseburgers and some super-sized fries just one helping? What’s next, a two-liter bottle of diet soda becoming one serving? Hey, look, no calories!

New Genetically Modified CRISPR-Mushroom Bypasses USDA Regulations

A Penn State University researcher has created a genetically modified mushroom that is now at the center of controversy over GMO regulations of genetically modified creations.

Researcher Yinong Yang developed a type of white button mushroom that looks identical to the type you’d buy in the produce section of a grocery store. The mushroom was created using CRISPR technology, which allows modification of genes with great precision. Put simply, CRISPR allows scientists to find an undesirable section of DNA, remove it, and, if they so choose, replace it with a more favorable gene slice.

Yang used CRISPR to alter 2 letters of the mushroom’s DNA code to create a Franken-fungus that is more resistant to browning from oxidation.

And that’s where all hell broke loose.

The USDA is allowing Yang’s new strain of mushroom to sidestep the GMO regulatory system, even though it couldn’t be more genetically engineered if Yang programmed it to grow a brain. The department says the mushroom gets a free pass because it does not contain “any introduced genetic material” from a plant pest, such as a virus or bacteria.

Under the USDA’s rules, conventional GMOs are created by introducing foreign genes, like a bacteria designed to make a crop resistant to pests. As long as you don’t add anything to a crop, it’s not considered a conventional GMO.

In a letter to Pulse HeadlinesMichael J. Firko, Deputy Administrator at the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), said:

“Consistent with previous responses to similar letters of inquiry, APHIS does not consider CRISPR/Cas9-edited white button mushrooms as described in your October 30, 2015 letter to be regulated pursuant to 7 CFR part 340.”

Yang “merely” deleted some of the mushroom’s genes that create the enzyme that turns it brown.

In the past 5 years, 30 new crops have used the USDA’s loophole using techniques similar to CRISPR, which alter the already-existing genome to give the crop new abilities.

If you think our genetic food chain has been royally screwed up by big bio-ag’s like Monsanto and Syngenta, and massively over-processed by Big Food, things are just about to get a whole lot worse, and what’s more, our own government is doing it to us – yet again.

As reported by Business Insider, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released a letter to the public last week confirming that the agency does not plan to regulate a mushroom that has been genetically modified so that it won’t turn brown.

The letter was in response to an inquiry from mushroom developer Dr. Yinong Yang, of the College of Agricultural Services at Penn State University, about whether a division of the USDA would be seeking to regulate the mushroom.

This decision, wherever it ultimately came from, is in contrast to the USDA’s previous approach with GMOs, which are regulated by the department’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). That division supposedly monitors new genetically modified foods that “may pose a risk to plant health,” according to the agency’s website.

Genetic suicide of the food chain?

The mushroom is not the first crop to be modified using the controversial gene-editing technique CRISPR-Cas9, but it is the first plant that the USDA says is not subject to regulation. “That means everything we know about genetically modified food may be about to change,” Business Insider noted.

As reported by the website Ensia in January, CRISPR is expected to bring about big changes within the food chain, and as you might imagine, the potential for lasting genetic damage of foods is high. What used to take researchers weeks, months and years of genetic tinkering to accomplish, CRISPR can do in a fraction of the time.

“It really opens up the genome of virtually every organism that’s been sequenced to be edited and engineered,” said Jill Wildonger of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

“In the past, it was a student’s entire Ph.D. thesis to change one gene,” Bruce Conklin, a geneticist at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco, told The New York Times. “CRISPR just knocked that out of the park.”

What makes the technique highly controversial is the potential for misuse – and the history of Mankind is fraught with examples of misuse of technology. As we reported just last month:

USA Deregulates New Monsanto Genetically Modified Food Strain

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has opened the door for farmers to plant MON87419, a new strain of genetically modified (GM) corn created by Monsanto to tolerate the weed killers dicamba and glufosinate without government oversight. The move will likely increase spraying of the herbicides.

Like earlier strains of GMO corn, MON87419 is designed to withstand being coated in toxic chemicals that wipe out weeds and other plant life on farm fields. The deregulation was announced by the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service last Monday. [1]

The USDA deregulated the strain of corn after Monsanto petitioned the agency in August 2015. The move comes despite 2 dozen unfavorable statements received during the USDA’s public comment period. The consumer rights nonprofit organization Food & Water Watch was one such commenter. The group expressed concern that allowing the proliferation of such herb-resistant crops could “lead to an increase in dicamba use, which will spur the evolution of dicamba-resistant weeds and the abandonment of conservation tillage practices.

Another commenter included The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, which said:

“Without a coordinated and thorough evaluation of the full technology package, and a meaningful analysis of impacts, adding yet another new crop/herbicide package will continue adding to the existing harmful effects on herbicides on ecological systems, human health, and farmers’ livelihoods through herbicide drift and nontarget crop losses; the widespread increase in herbicide-resistant weeds; and environmental and public health impact.”

The coalition called for an environmental impact statement (EIS) to determine what sort of environmental damage the GMO corn strain might cause. [2]

Monsanto is seeking to use dicamba to diversify and provide long-term growth, as generic products are seriously threatening sales of its blockbuster herbicide, Roundup. Farmers are also looking for alternatives to the toxic, glyphosate-containing product now that weeds are becoming resistant to it. [3]

According to the Save Our Crops Coalition, dicamba was “designed to eliminate broadleaf weeds, the use of these herbicides has the harmful side effect of injuring broadleaf crops, like soybeans, tomatoes, grapes, green beans, peas, cucumbers, squash, melons, pumpkins, and other fruits and vegetables.  In addition, herbicide application inconsistent with label directions can harm corn production.

General Mills, a highly unethical food corporation that bitterly fought against labeling GMOs in California and Oregon, has now surrendered to Vermont’s labeling laws and announced it will start labeling GMOs across the country.

“General Mills has announced it will start labeling products with genetically modified (GMO) ingredients, becoming the second major food company to make the transition following Campbell Soup’s decision last month,” reports Ecowatch.com. The pro-Monsanto biotech shills in the mainstream media — like Forbes.com — have also covered the story, but they’re ridiculously claiming that printing an extra line on food labels is going to raise food prices across the country and make groceries unaffordable.

This surrender by General Mills stands as yet another huge victory for consumers and a staggering defeat for the food monopolists and Monsanto deceivers who have desperately tried to block all GMO labeling by any means necessary (including engaging in illegal campaign money laundering carried out by the Grocery Manufacturers of America).

General Mills desperately hoped the DARK Act would pass

All along, General Mills financially supported that money laundering and helped fund highly deceptive efforts in California to block GMO labeling there. Even now, General Mills’ totally clueless executive vice president and chief operating officer Jeff Harmening laments the fact that the DARK Act did not pass as General Mills wanted. In a deceptively worded post on the General Mills website, he even states that he was “disappointed that a national solution has still not been reached.”

By “national solution,” he means the nationwide outlawing of mandatory GMO labeling laws. That was what General Mills pushed for, along with Monsanto, PepsiCo and all the other usual food giant suspects whose entire business models depend on tricking people into buying and consuming things they would probably avoid if they really knew the truth about what’s in them.

General Mills, like every other food giant that depends heavily on GMO ingredients, doesn’t want you to know what you’re eating. In fact, they’ve only surrendered to labeling after being dragged kicking and screaming to that inescapable conclusion. General Mills could have chosen to label their GMOs at any time over the last several years, but they refused to do so. Even as Campbell’s took the lead and announced its intention to label all GMOs, General Mills refused to engage in food transparency until it was forced to do so.

Even its own page explaining its reluctant GMO labeling cave-in begins with a huge lie. It states “We believe you should know about your food and how we make ours.” But that’s not true! In reality, General Mills believes in hiding GMO ingredients in all its food products and making sure consumers are left in the dark about what they’re buying and eating.

Unethical corporations like General Mills will only label GMOs when forced to do so

“One thing is very clear,” General Mills’ Jeff Harmening writes on the company’s website. “Vermont state law requires us to start labeling certain grocery store food packages that contain GMO ingredients or face significant fines.”

And that’s precisely the point. Deceptive corporations like General Mills — who essentially function as manufacturing and propaganda partners of Monsanto — will never engage in honest food transparency unless they are forced to do so. They have no self-derived ethics or honesty, and they have only announced this GMO labeling initiative after being forced to do so by the voters and lawmakers of Vermont, whom they strenuously opposed at every turn.

Even in announcing its intention to label GMOs solely to avoid being fined by Vermont, General Mills can’t resist spreading yet more pro-Monsanto GMO propaganda and lies.

As Harmening writes, “All sides of this debate, 20 years of research, and every major health and safety agency in the world agree that GMOs are not a health or safety concern.”

Harmening just can’t stop lying, in other words. To state that “all sides of this debate… agree that GMOs are not a health or safety concern” is a desperate deception that’s almost Obama-esque in its invocation of neurolinguistic twistery. It’s also a page ripped right out of the Monsanto playbook, claiming that there is essentially no side to the debate that isn’t pro-GMO. (The “science is settled” even when it isn’t.) Isn’t it obvious that some sides of this debate have legitimate and scientifically backed concerns about health and safety? When rats fed GMOs and glyphosate develop horrific cancer tumors — and when government agencies like the USDA and FDA function as nothing more than industry lapdogs — there are legitimate safety concerns surrounding GMOs.

Entire books have documented the enormous health risks associated with GMOs and glyphosate herbicide, including Altered Genes, Twisted Truth and GMO Myths and Truths: A Citizen’s Guide to the Evidence on the Safety and Efficacy of Genetically Modified Crops and Foods (both really informative books that I highly recommend).

General Mills, in other words, is still spreading GMO propaganda and lies even as it is surrendering to labeling requirements that it strongly opposed (and tried to block). The company still doesn’t get it, and its executives just can’t stop LYING.

That’s no surprise, as General Mills is the same company that once released a TOTAL breakfast cereal named “TOTAL Blueberry Pomegranate” that contained absolutely no blueberries or pomegranates.

U.S. FDA FINALLY Shamed into Testing for Monsanto’s Glyphosate Herbicide in Food

Sure, consumers are concerned about eating glyphosate. Wouldn’t you be? If 75% of air and rain samples tested contain glyphosate, it is highly likely that the ‘probable’ human carcinogen is also in our food supply. Now that the World Health Organization is calling a spade a spade, it appears the US Food and Drug Administration is forced to start testing food for glyphosate. [1]

The American public has been practically begging the agency to stop using the people as guinea pigs with a likely carcinogen. But only after the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) rebuked the FDA for failing to conduct assessments and failing to disclose risks to the public is the agency actually going to do something about it…or will it?

 This is the very same agency which approved GMO salmon, initially without a label, and declared the GMO fish just as safe as non-GMO varieties.

The GAO says that it found multiple areas of fault in the FDA’s pesticide residue testing program, specifically citing a failure to test for glyphosate.

New study by USDA proves it was wrong about GE alfalfa

Monsanto’s genetically engineered (GE) Roundup-Ready alfalfa has already cost farmers millions of dollars, and now, a new study by the USDA, the same agency that re-approved it, has found that GE alfalfa has really gone wild, literally.

In a study published in December 2015, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) verified that genetically engineered alfalfa had gone wild in our western states, in a very big way.

The study lends confirmation to and explains the number of transgenic contamination episodes over the past few years that have cost American alfalfa farmers and exporters millions of dollars. More telling is that the study exposes the failure of the USDA’s “coexistence” policy, says EcoWatch.

The USDA’s “Coexistence” fairytale

The USDA has long maintained that genetically engineered crops can coexist with nor-GMO and organic crops. Yet this very issue has been the basis of a number of complaints filed over GE alfalfa contaminating non-GMO fields. The USDA has long maintained that if GMO-farmers and non-GMO farmers “just sorted things out,” using good management practices, transgenes would be confined to GE crops and the fields where they are planted.

In 2013, the federal agency, in keeping with its belief in “coexistence” of these crops, rejected a Washington state farmer’s complaint about his alfalfa being rejected for export because of the presence of the genetically modified trait that made it unacceptable in Asian countries. The USDA said the Washington farmer’s non-GMO alfalfa crop should be addressed by the marketplace and not the government, reported Reuters.

Depending on which side of the fence people tend to lean, anti-GMOers are saying, “See, we told ya so,” and proponents of GMO crops are saying a little transgenetic contamination is to be expected. However, the USDA study found that in sites tested in California, Idaho and Washington state, over one-quarter, 27 percent of them, contained transgenic alfalfa.
