Former Bush Official Just Confirmed That Our Wars Are for Corporate Interests

“I think Smedley Butler was onto something,” Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, former George W. Bush administration heavyweight, told Salon in an exclusive interview.

Major General Smedley Butler earned the highest rank in the U.S. Marine Corps, accumulating numerous accolades as he helped lead the United States through decades of war. He later became an ardent critic of such militarism and imperialism.

“War is a racket,” Butler famously said, and Wilkerson — who has also turned critical of U.S. imperialist policy — agrees with and admires the esteemed Marine.

Wilkerson, who served as chief of staff to former secretary of state, Colin Powell, has grown tired of “the corporate interests that we go abroad to slay monsters for.”

Of the profiteering scheme that wars have come to embody, Wilkerson quoted Butler:

Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.

Noting Butler’s brief but accurate characterization of what Eisenhower called the military-industrial complex, Wilkerson added that today’s war machine “is more pernicious than Eisenhower ever thought it would be.”

The willingness of such weapons and military equipment corporations to excuse the transgressions of repressive and abusive regimes in the Middle East and Asia for the sake of profit, Wilkerson asserted, stands as evidence Eisenhower underestimated the extent the to which the problem would manifest.

“Was Bill Clinton’s expansion of NATO — after George H. W. Bush and [his Secretary of State] James Baker had assured Gorbachev and then Yeltsin that we wouldn’t go an inch further east — was this for Lockheed Martin, and Raytheon, and Boeing, and others, to increase their network of potential weapons sales?” Wilkerson asked.

“You bet it was,” he answered his own question.

“Is there a penchant on behalf of the Congress,” he continued, “to bless the use of force more often than not because of the constituencies they have and the money they get from the defense contractors?

“You bet.

“It’s not like Dick Cheney or someone like that went and said let’s have a war because we want to make money for Halliburton,” Wilkerson explained, describing such decision-making as “pernicious.”

Taking his description a step further, Wilkerson characterized those corporations flooding congressional elections and political PACs with cash as “another pernicious influence.”

Relating another ill of the U.S. war machine, Wilkerson repined the creep of privatization of “public functions, like prisons,” for which the former Bush official places greatest blame on Republicans — though Democrats appear as eager about the shift. Salon mentioned Hillary Clinton’s speech from 2011, during her tenure as Secretary of State, in which she stated, “It’s time for the United States to start thinking of Iraq as a business opportunity.”

Indeed, journalist Jeremy Scahill extensively reported and investigated the enormous army of private contractors operating in Iraq and Afghanistan — with a particular focus on Blackwater. Run by notorious mercenary Erik Prince — who recently became the subject of an investigation by the Dept. of Justice and other federal agencies — Blackwater appeared to operate so unpredictably as to essentially be a rogue organization.

Scahill penned an article for the Guardian in 2007, revealing the exact troubles with privatization Wilkerson referred to — there were 48,000 ‘private contractors’ working for 630 companies in varying capacities in Iraq.

“In many respects,” Wilkerson continued, “it is now private interests that benefit most from our use of military force. Whether it’s private security contractors, that are still all over Iraq or Afghanistan, or it’s the bigger-known defense contractors, like the number one in the world, Lockheed Martin.”

Authorities Plan Strategic Attack of Anti-Vaccine “Myths”

One promising new approach is to keep track of the vaccine myths circulating in cyberspace and rebut each one as it appears. This requires tracking information from search engines and following anti-vaccination websites and parents’ forums. – Economist

The battle against anti-vaccine websites and individuals is about to intensify.

Rather than fighting on just a PR front, authorities are now planning a strategic offensive against anti-vaccine “myths” as they appear. The idea is to combat these supposed myths one by one in a concerted fashion.

According to the Economist article:

Many [parents] were shaken by a claim, later debunked, that there was a link between autism and the MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella.

The only problem is. The Economist is wrong. The linkage between MMR and autism has not been debunked.

In fact, the MMR-autism debate has been reinfoced by the recent film Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe.

Though the presentation of the film at the Tribeca Film Festival was cancelled after severe pressure from the pharmaceutical industry, this did nothing to deprive it of a premiere.

It is now scheduled for release tomorrow at New York’s Angelika Film Center, and will then receive a wider release in other cities.

The film revolves around accusations that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention refused to release information about links between autism and the MMR vaccine.

A  former center employee, William Thompson, has claimed that studies seeming to confirm the link were purposefully destroyed or altered.

The director and co-writer of “Vaxxed” is Andrew Wakefield, who produced a study in 1998 that suggested the possibility of a link between autism and vaccinations. It was first published in a medical journal, Lancet, and then retracted in 2010.

Though Wakefield’s medical license was revoked in Britain, as the anti-vaccination movement has grown, so has his stature.

We interviewed Dr. Wakefield on this in 2010.

The continued debunking of vaccines is perhaps the starkest example of how the Internet is upending mainstream media shibboleths.

Despite the unequivocal stances of health organizations like the CDC that “vaccines do not cause autism,” the anti-vaccine movement has expanded rapidly in large part because of social media and websites.

The government has responded in typical fashion, with force.

New laws in some countries now force parents to vaccinate their children. However, as the Economist notes, “Strict rules may even harden anti-vaccination attitudes.”

More important, say public-health experts, is to boost confidence in the safety of vaccines and trust in the authorities that recommend them—both badly damaged in many European countries by past public-health mis-steps, such as a scandal with contaminated blood supply in France from the late 1990s.

Appropriate For April Fool’s Day: Central Banks…

I should put this one in the “you tell me” category, because I don’t intend on commenting much today about this article, other than to say I am not, let me repeat that, not in favor of any cashless society, nor of central banks having any role in same. Physical media of exchange must always remain if there is to be genuine individual freedom, creativity, and movement.

But that said, I’d like to know everyone else’s thoughts here for a change:

CIA Left Explosives On A School Bus

The CIA left “explosive training material” under the hood of a Loudoun County school bus after a training exercise last week, a bus that was used to ferry elementary and high school students to and from school on Monday and Tuesday with the material still sitting in the engine compartment, according to the CIA and Loudoun County officials.

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office and the CIA said in statements Thursday that the explosive material was left behind after a training exercise at Briar Woods High School during spring break. The CIA said it was a training scenario for explosives-detecting dogs.

CIA officials said in a statement that the material “did not pose a danger to passengers on the bus,” which was used on March 28 and 29. Authorities held a joint training program at Briar Woods from March 21 to 24.

Loudoun schools spokesman Wayde Byard said the CIA indicated the nature of the material but asked the school system not to disclose it. Byard described it as a “putty-type” material designed for use on the battlefield and which requires a special detonator; such putty, or plastic, explosives — including the well-known C-4 — are used in demolition and are considered stable.

Byard said law enforcement agencies use school facilities on occasion to conduct realistic training exercises, including active-shooter drills.

As part of last week’s training exercise, CIA trainers placed explosive material into the engine compartment of a school bus on Thursday to test a dog’s ability to sniff it out. They also placed the material in parts of the school. Byard said the dog successfully found the material in the engine compartment, but some of the material fell deeper inside the compartment and became wedged beneath the hoses.

Today’s news is buttressed by intriguing and thought provoking economic analysis.  Jeff Nielson harpoons the declining middle class while James Corbett narrows in on how Yellen has the reigns of the global economy.  Both reads are quite salient.

In other news, Dr. Farrell gives his take into Lockheed Martin’s latest development, which portends some notable future changes, while the everpresent cornerstone of corruption – Big Pharma – is again embroiled in vaccine machinations.

Ending with some encouraging and positive news, another company chooses to label genetically modified foods to increase the growing list, while we also got some information into non-toxic Cancer therapies discussed by Dr. Jeffrey Dach.

Hope you all are doing well, and be safe.
